If It's Not Me
Janice sniffled a little as she whispered, "Actually—Denise isn't my biological daughter." Swish! Daniel felt as if he had been struck by lightning. His body immediately tensed up as soon as he heard what she had said. He couldn't control the expression on his face as he promptly let go of Janice and looked at her with a frown. He didn't expect that Janice would suddenly bring up this topic to him. When Janice looked up and saw Daniel looking so shocked, she said with resignation, "I'm not lying. It was my good friend who gave birth to her, but my friend then died of dystocia. So I adopted Denise and raised her like my own. I have never mentioned this matter to any outsiders before. You're the first." After she finished explaining, Janice looked keenly at Daniel while pursing her rosy lips—a trace of relief flashed across her eyes. It's my first time bringing up this matter in five years. The reason why Janice took the initiative to tell him now was that she knew that Daniel was a reliable person. Moreover, somewhere deeper in her heart, she wished to indirectly let him know that she wasn't someone with a promiscuous private life as rumored by the outside world. She was worried that Daniel would misunderstand her and develop bad feelings toward her in his heart. At this point in time, Janice couldn't figure out her true feelings about Daniel. All she knew was that she wanted to live on with him and hoped that Daniel could always accompany her and Denise. Meanwhile, after Daniel returned to his senses, he swiftly controlled his expression and cast aside his shock. Then, he asked tentatively, "If that's the case, then Denise's father—" Daniel paused for a moment when he spoke of this, and his heart was immediately in his throat as he anticipated yet worried about Janice's reply. When Janice heard that, her beautiful face turned slightly cold, and she said, "I don't know who Denise's father is." At once, Daniel breathed a sigh of relief. However, there were mixed emotions in his heart after seeing the stark change in Janice's demeanor a while ago. After he thought about the matter, he continued, "Then, what if Denise's biological father suddenly returns? By then—"Before he could finish speaking, she quickly interrupted him. "There's no way I will let him see Denise. If he didn't walk away, my good friend wouldn't be depressed all day and eventually die of dystocia! He's nothing but a sc*mbag! A man like him isn't worthy of being Denise's father!" Janice's eyes were filled with hatred for that man. Apparently, she held a deep sense of hatred toward Daniel, who indirectly caused Evelyn's death. Likewise, her deep sense of hatred made him realize he might not be able to reveal his identity at all. All of a sudden, the gaze in Janice's beautiful eyes quickly became tender as she stared keenly at Daniel. Finally, she changed the topic of conversation. "Denise only has one father." As he laid his gaze at the woman who was looking as gentle as a lamb before him, he naturally understood the meaning behind these words. Because of this, his heart trembled, and he clenched his fists in response. As a result, he suddenly became clueless about how to respond to her."Daniel?" Janice called out softly. "Yes?" Daniel hurriedly forced out a trace of a smile. Janice inhaled deeply, raised her porcelain fair chin, and looked up—her beautiful eyes that were as bright as the stars shone with lights of hope. "W-Will you always be Denise's father?" With that, Janice started to hyperventilate a little. She felt absolutely nervous the moment she said those words. At this point, the meaning behind Janice's question could be regarded as her indirect confession. Moreover, she had never acted so brazenly to anyone before either. Although she had been a single mother for five years, there still lived a young girl who had never experienced love before in her heart. She wouldn't be so straightforward if it were in the past. Nevertheless, at present, her heart desperately longed for a man she could rely on after having experienced the ups and downs in her life these five years. Thus, when this man she deemed reliable appeared, she would take the initiative and walk toward him without hesitation—not wishing to miss him.She focused her gaze on Daniel's resolute facial features, and she could feel her delicate-looking body tense up, for she feared that his answer would disappoint her. The next moment, she saw him giving her a smile that made her feel at ease after he regained his composure when her bold question momentarily stunned him. "I—will always be Denise's father," he answered with a husky and charmingly magnetic voice. When Janice heard that, her face instantly beamed into an incomparably alluring smile—her eyes were a little teary, and her voice was somewhat quivering.
