If It's Not Me
As Daniel spoke, his expression turned grim, and he gave off such a spine-chilling aura that it gave them the chills. The reason he cared so much about the wallet wasn't because of his ID and the black card that were in it. He wanted it back because it contained a picture of him and Evelyn that was slipped behind his ID, and it was the only picture he had of them together. Nancy's face turned pale, and her body trembled uncontrollably as she was overwhelmed by the sense of oppression Daniel gave off. On the other hand, Fern was so nervous that she was sweating profusely, but she managed to hold it out and stared Daniel straight into his eyes. This is my chance. What he cares about is the picture. It must be! In the end, Daniel gave in and calmed himself down before saying, "Tell me, what do you need my help with?" Upon hearing what he said, she was instantly relieved and was glad that she got it right. "I can return the ID and credit card to you but not the picture. Unless you help me out with something…" she replied instantaneously.Nancy seemed to know what Fern wanted to say and got all tense. "Fern, don't tell me that you…" "Ms. Black, there's no other way." Fern was firm about her decision, although it was apparent that both of them disagreed with each other on the matter. With that, Fern turned and looked at Daniel before saying, "I'd like you to help my friends." Daniel furrowed his brow upon hearing her request, but after talking to her, he found out that Nancy was initially the owner of the orphanage, but it was auctioned off by the bank after her husband lost all their money to gambling. Currently, the land was owned by the Murphy Family, and the Murphys had been urging them to leave the place every day. Because the orphanage would be closed down, the orphans would be enrolled in the Eaglet Project. It was said that they would be sent to specialized schools to be educated and return to the country later on. After hearing that, Daniel asked, "Isn't it great since they have a better opportunity there?" "Initially, I felt so too. However, Fern was strongly against it and said that it was all fake." Nancy sighed. "The project is indeed a sham! I have asked about it. Daisy and the others will be harmed if we send them over!" Fern got so worked up by it that her face was blushing.Based on his vast experience going to war, he could naturally tell that she wasn't lying. "What have you heard about it?" She then immediately told him about what she knew. Earlier on, when she was doing odd jobs to earn some money, she got to know a pair of siblings who were dependent on each other from a young age. The elder sister worked very hard so that she could afford to send his brother to school. One day, she was elated after receiving news that her brother had been selected to join the Eaglet Project. However, she couldn't contact her brother at all the first few days he was there. One night, she received a call from him, and he seemed confused. He insisted that he had killed someone under his teacher's instruction and begged his sister to get him out while he cried. Before she could ask him about what had happened, the call had ended. Later on, she finally managed to get in touch with her brother via video call after enquiring at the Eaglet Project's office. During the video call, her brother seemed cold and emotionless, like a robot, not mentioning a word about the other night. The sister felt that something wasn't right and told Fern that she had used up her savings to get a place at the Eaglet Project in order to go meet his brother. She left the next day after bidding goodbye to Fern and had never come back since. Thus, Fern was strongly against sending the children to the Eaglet Project because it wasn't as good as it seemed. As she spoke, she took a picture and showed it to Daniel. It was a picture of the siblings where the brother was around the age of seven, and the sister was a teenager who had prominent canine teeth, which looked cute. "Look at this. I'm not lying to you!" When she looked up, she saw the straight-faced Daniel and instantly felt dejected. "I know that you don't believe in my words, but everything that I said is true!" She sighed out of sadness. As she was feeling dispirited, Daniel exclaimed, "I believe your words!"
