If It's Not Me
While Daniel knitted his eyebrows, Nancy angrily snapped at Fern. "Keep your mouth shut! Where did you learn to say that? Where is your sense of shame?!" She then turned around and explained to Daniel with a smile. "I'm sorry for the trouble that Fern gave you, Sir, but I can assure you that she is not a bad kid. In fact, we're responsible for the shameful action she just committed. After all, she only did something so shameful behind my back to keep all of us fed because our orphanage went bankrupt ever since it closed down. In fact, I've been lecturing her about that, and I promise I'll pay for all your damages, but please do me a favor—do not call the cops. She is still a young little girl, and I don't want her future ruined just because of that." Nancy put her words in a sincere manner, her eyes filled with desperation as she implored the man to go easy on Fern. Meanwhile, Daniel was able to notice the patches on Nancy's shirt, as well as the timid kids hiding behind Fern while they all stared at him with horrified looks on their faces. Judging from that, he could tell that Nancy wasn't lying. Moreover, he had already noticed the dilapidated appearance of the orphanage before he came in, which further confirmed his observation. "I won't call the cops. Just give me my wallet," Daniel replied with a smile. "Thank you so much! Thank you!" Nancy expressed her gratitude to Daniel and turned around, shouting, "What are you waiting for? Return the wallet to this man!" "But Ms. Black… He is a rapist! How could you believe his words?!" Fern showed her reluctance to give in, staring at Daniel with doubts in her mind because she didn't trust Daniel at all. "Fern!" Nancy snarled at Fern and proceeded to apologize to Daniel, but before she could do that, she was interrupted by a loud bang and some commotion right outside the door. "Open the goddamn door, or I'm going to tear this thing down!" Nancy's face changed as she peeked through the gap of the door and saw several men standing outside the gate. While it looked like there were over twenty of them, each of them appeared to be armed with metal pipes, which they used to hit the gate to intimidate everyone inside the orphanage. Meanwhile, the few men who were standing in the forefront were the ones whom Daniel just roughed up not long ago, including Xavier himself. Thus, it was obvious that Xavier had returned with more men to retaliate against Daniel and Fern. When Fern discovered who the visitor was, her face changed. She then looked back and said, "Daisy, take the kids back to the room, okay? Don't come out until I tell you to." "Alright." The girl, who seemed to be older than her peers, replied firmly and brought the other children back to their rooms before closing the door behind them. At the sight of their reaction, Daniel believed it wasn't the first time that they had been confronted by someone who came after them for vengeance. "Fern, get out of here from the back door. I'll take care of this," Nancy said. "But…" Fern was seen with a bitter look on her face, unwilling to leave Nancy behind. "But what? Hurry up!" Nancy anxiously said. At that crucial moment, Fern suddenly gazed at Daniel and said, "You want your wallet back, right? Here is the deal—you take care of them, and I'll return you your wallet." Daniel smiled when he heard the lady's words. What kind of ridiculous logic does she have right there? "What makes you think you're still in any position to negotiate with me? You stole my wallet, and now you want me to do your bidding? Do you think this makes sense?" The man curled his lips upward. "Because I told them you're my boss, so they're not going to let you walk away safely either, anyway!" Fern made up an excuse to justify why Daniel should do as she said. Finding the lady's expression amusing, Daniel chuckled but didn't reject Fern's proposition. After all, he was never planning to interfere with the matter. "Fine, you can give me back my wallet once I take care of this trouble for you." The man finished his words and turned around, walking away. In the meantime, Fern was stunned, not expecting Daniel to agree with her. "Sir!" Nancy tried to stop Daniel when she saw him going to step out of the orphanage. "Don't worry about me. I'll handle the situation," Daniel answered calmly and opened the door before heading outside. When Xavier and his men saw Daniel emerging from the orphanage, they snarled and growled even louder and more intimidatingly, hitting the gate even harder.
