The Second Love

Chapter 247 Absurd Plot Twist

I had just woken up when the housekeeper hollered at me from the living room, telling me that someone was here for me. Hence, I was not in a clear state of mind at that time. I was puzzled. Who is here for me so early in the morning? Well, I chose to ignore the fact that it was almost eleven o'clock. After staying here for such a long time, I never had any visitors other than Shannon and Grace, who came over together the last time. Even Calvin had never been here. Yawning and stretching my arms, I got out of bed and went to wash myself up lazily. Taking my sweet time, I changed into a clean set of clothes before slowly heading to the living room. However, the moment I stepped into the living room, the drowsiness I felt instantly dispersed, and I became alert. Oh my goodness! Why is this old lady here without even informing me earlier? Showing up unannounced is really scary! What is Dominic doing? Why didn't he tell me that his mother would be coming over? When the housekeeper saw that I was standing rooted in the corridor, she immediately came over to hold me and asked, “Mrs. Hartnell, are you feeling unwell? Do you need me to call Mr. Hartnell? I suppose you're hungry? I made some food. Do you want to eat some now?” In fact, the housekeeper would ask me the same questions every day. If I felt all right, she would then bring some food over for me. As for whether or not I would have an appetite for lunch after the late breakfast, that was not a concern at all since I had had a good appetite recently. Besides, I did not tell her to address me in this manner. She had been addressing Dominic as “Mr. Hartnell,” so I suppose she found it easier to call me “Mrs. Hartnell.” I was not used to it in the beginning. Nonetheless, I got used to it gradually. However, I was sensitive enough to feel that the moment the housekeeper addressed me as “Mrs. Hartnell,” Milena immediately shot me a cold glare. She obviously did not like the way the housekeeper addressed me. I was not afraid of her in the past, but I was rather uneasy now that I had a pair of twins in my womb. Besides, my bump was already showing. Considering that I was pregnant with twins, the bump was certainly bigger than an average pregnant lady. “Um... Chloe, you can head home early today. I-I have to attend to something now.” Chloe was the name of the housekeeper. After hearing my words, she hesitated for a moment. That was because she would usually only leave after Dominic arrived home. However, I had no choice now. After all, I had no idea whether Milena purposely came because she knew I was here or was it a coincidence that she bumped into me. Regardless of the reason, Milena definitely had something to say to me. Besides, some family matters should not be discussed with outsiders around. In order to ease Chloe's mind, I recollected myself before flashing her a smile and reassuring her, “Chloe, you may leave first. Nothing will happen to me. Dominic should be back soon, and I'll explain everything to him. He won't blame you for leaving early.” Chloe glanced at me, then shifted her gaze to Milena, who was sitting quietly on the couch. In the end, she agreed to my request. After Chloe's departure, the house became eerily quiet. While I was trying to think hard to strike up a conversation, Milena observed me and my baby bump. Ah, we can't stay so awkward forever! After mentally preparing myself, I decided to break the ice. To my surprise, Milena spoke at the same time. “Mrs. Hartnell, should I call Dom back now?” “Do the children belong to Dom?” Hearing her straightforward question, I bit my lower lip and answered, “Yes. They are his. I'm in the fourth month of my pregnancy now.” As long as I was in a clear state of mind, there was no way I would deny it. Besides, I was speaking the truth, as Dominic was indeed the children's father. Once I finished my sentence, silence filled the room once more. It was as if the air was frozen. My heart was pounding hard then, for Milena was never fond of me. Coupled with the fact that I was cohabiting with Dominic and pregnant with his children out of wedlock, I could very well imagine how furious she would be. Besides, I had never thought of bumping into her in such a situation. However, the children in my womb were her biological grandchildren. For the children's sake, I supposed she would not put me in such a tough spot. After much thought, I decided to give Dominic a phone call to get him back home. Facing his mother alone made me feel anxious.“Mrs. Hartnell, you can have a seat first. I'll call Dom for him to come back home now.” “There's no hurry to call Dom back. I have some things that I want to say to you in private.” Upon hearing her words, I felt so conflicted. In the end, I still put my phone down. It was not like I had a choice. I could not possibly offend Milena over such a small matter. Nervous, I held my baby bump and replied, “All right. You may speak now.” Milena scrutinized me for a moment before asking again, “The children, do they really belong to Dom?” Anger surged through me instantly. What is she trying to imply? Is she saying that I'm pregnant with another guy's child and am here to cheat on Dom? Is Dom really that dumb in her eyes that he won't even know whether or not the children belong to him? “Mrs. Hartnell, Dominic and I are very sure that the children belong to him.” Nonetheless, Milena remained calm and replied monotonously, “There's no need for you to be so agitated. I'm just trying to make sure. If the children in your womb really belong to the Hartnell family, I'll definitely acknowledge them.” Although I was still boiling with fury, I felt slightly better after hearing her affirmation. However, soon later, I realized I was too naïve. That was because right after Milena finished her sentence, she took a checkbook out of her purse. She wrote on it, tore the paper, and placed it on the table. Seeing her actions, I could vividly feel that a dramatic twist of events was about to happen. “Here's one million. We will do a DNA paternity test once the children are born. If they really belong to Dom, I'll give you another million to hand the children over to us, and you are to leave them. Well, it's also all right if they do not belong to Dom. In that case, I'll still give you one million, but you must take the children with you.” Milena's words were like fuel to the raging fire within me. The fury that was burning within me intensified to the extent that I could even burn down the house we were in now. Her words and actions were much worse than a dramatic plot twist. Instead, it was just plain absurd. “Please leave while I can still hold in my anger,” I warned Milena with my fist clenched tightly, afraid that I would throw things at her if I were to go out of control. “Why? You're not willing to do so? Do you feel that the money is too little? One should not be too greedy. It doesn't matter if it's one million or two million, for you and your family, it's—” “Enough! Please leave and get out of my sight now!” I interrupted her blabber with a shout, my hands trembling uncontrollably. Right at that time, the door opened, and Dominic dashed into the house in a panic.
