The Second Love
I pressed my lips into a thin line before saying, “Calvin, when you send me home later, wait for me for a little while. I'll make some food before going to the office with you.” Calvin nodded after mulling over my words. At his hesitation, I guessed that Dominic must have told him to send me straight home; he did not want me to go anywhere else. Still, this matter was settled, and what I should do now was to visit Nicholas. At the start, I was worried that reporters might be around. Yet, my worry was for naught. There were not many doctors and nurses around, let alone reporters. Seemingly reading the confusion on my face, Calvin then briefly explained the situation to me. It was then I found out that the hospital we were at was a private hospital. It was an establishment catered for the rich and the famous. Naturally, their security was top-notch. Thus, it would be almost impossible for those paparazzi to even get into the building. Calvin even told me that Nicholas was still unconscious. Although he was not in danger, it would still be some time before he returned to the waking world. When I heard that, I was reminded of Monica, and a wave of sorrow washed over my heart. When we reached Nicholas' ward, Calvin went in with me. The moment Jake caught sight of me, his jaw dropped. “Oh my, how did you find this place? Nicholas is really in a bad state right now, so can you just please leave us alone?” When I saw how quickly Jake was trying to drive us away from Nicholas, I hurriedly pulled him out and informed him about Nicholas' grandmother's situation.Jake furrowed his brows once I was done. For a moment, I was at a loss as to how I should console him. Thus, I looked at him helplessly like they were both stuck in quicksand and there was nothing I could do. After a long while of silence, Jake sighed. “What do we do now? I don't even know when Nicholas would wake. Mrs. Scott, she... can she be transferred to a different hospital? I'd like to transfer her over here so that I can watch over the two of them at the same time. Moreover, the facilities here are more advanced.” I shook my head before muttering my doubts. “I'm not sure, but Mrs. Scott is currently in the ICU. I'm afraid transferring her to another hospital would not be an easy feat. What if any issues were to arise during her transfer...” I did not finish my sentence, but I was sure Jake understood what I meant. In the end, I spent a long while discussing with Jake before we decided to consult the doctors of both hospitals for a better plan.“Ms. Zanetti.” Hearing Calvin's voice made me guess that the ten minutes must have been up. When I thought about how Dominic was still upset with me, I then told Jake that I would not be able to visit Monica for a while. As the two of us were talking about a serious matter, he did not pick a bone with me like he used to do. He only told me that he would make the necessary arrangements. Hearing that, I sighed in relief quietly. Before I left, I even asked Jake for his number to add him on WhatsApp. That way, he would be able to update me if there were any changes to Monica and Nicholas' status. Otherwise, I would have to go through the same anxiousness I felt when I could not locate them. I went straight home after leaving the hospital. Fortunately, the food at home was well stocked, and I could make anything I wanted to without much fuss. As I did not want to waste any more time, I made a simple yet nutritious meal before rushing to the office. I had been there once, so it was not an unfamiliar place to me anymore. The secretary by the doorway did not stop me either, but she did inform me kindly about how Dominic had lost his temper again a moment ago. Gripping tightly onto the lunchbox, I took a few deep breaths before raising my hand to knock on the door. Without waiting for a reply, I opened the door. A low and icy voice instantly traveled into my ears. “Who let you in here? Get out!” My footsteps faltered for a brief second, but I steeled myself and continued walking further into the room. “I... It's me. I've made some food for you.”Dominic shot me a glacial look that sent chills down my spine. “Didn't I tell Calvin to send you home? Why are you here?” Although he had softened his demeanor earlier, I knew he was still furious. Therefore, I promptly raised the bag in my hand. “I made some food for you. You can't skip meals. Why don't you... why don't you come over? I'll keep you company while you eat, okay?” Even the temperature in the room seemed to be at sub zeros as he stared at me. In fact, I could even see three words on his face—leave me alone. However, that was something I was not going to do. If I give him the right explanation, I was certain he would stop looking at me as if he was going to skin me alive. Finally, after five minutes of him staring at me, he moved. He left his huge working desk and walked toward the table where the food was. I quickly opened the lunchbox and pushed it toward him as if I was showing him a priceless treasure. “There you go. Go on and dig in while it's still hot. I came over right after I made it.” Dominic sat down, but he folded his arms and gloomily studied me. “Aren't you going to watch over Nicholas? Why did you go home to make a meal for me? Aren't you really worried about him? Upon hearing that, I knew I could not hesitate in giving him an answer. “I did go to visit him. After I found out how he is, I left. He has someone watching over him and Mrs. Scott. You're the most important person to me. You're my number one!” Dominic barked out a laugh. “Haha! Is that really so?” I nodded so fervently that my head nearly detached itself from my neck. “It's true. I swear on it!” After informing him about my stance, I began apologizing profusely. Basically, I did everything I could to get back into his good books. “What did I tell you before? I told you not to interact with Nicholas anymore. Not only have you not listened to me, but you even got to know his grandmother. If nothing happened to Nicholas, you weren't planning to tell me about this at all, were you? Liliana, do you think it's fun to lie to me?” Realizing that he was going off-topic, I hastily said, “No, that's not what it is. There's nothing between the two of us!” Then, I told him in detail about my meetings with Monica. However, I did not say a word about spending Nicholas' birthday with him. The situation was already disastrous enough, so I was afraid that he was going to destroy the world if I were to bring up that incident. Even after the long one-sided talk, and even when my throat was as dry as the desert, he remained silent. All he did was fix his eyes on me. It made the hairs behind my neck stand. In the end, I had to use the ace up my sleeve. “Dominic, everything I've said is true. Look, don't you see how much I love you and how I can't stay away from you? Why would I be intimate with another man when you're already taking up every inch of my heart? Trust me. It's been a really long time since I've talked to Nicholas.” I then blinked at him before giving him the purest look I could conjure, hoping that he would respond. After what felt like eons of silence, Dominic finally graced me with his voice. “Are you sure that you're not hiding anything else from me?” My heart skipped a beat, and a shudder wracked my body.
