The Second Love
Laurel seemed frightened, for she stammered and stumbled over her words for a long time. She just kept repeating how she did not know what had happened. However, upon hearing Laurel's words, I figured out why Monica had passed out. It must be because she had heard about what happened to Nicholas. In the afternoon, two nurses had entered the ward to administer treatment for the patient beside her. Nicholas had been the topic they were chatting about. Thus, Monica passed out after hearing her words. I anxiously paced outside the emergency room, fearing to hear the worst. The day before, the doctor had reminded me several times that patients with cerebral hemorrhages like Monica must not be agitated. Monica had turned out fine this time because it was her first attack and because she was sent to the hospital in time. However, if she were to have another attack, then there was no guarantee that she would be able to come out completely unscathed. Staring at the red lights above the emergency room, my eyes reddened before tears fell. Dominic walked over to hug me before mumbling comforting words to my ears. I hugged him back, but I still could not stop my hands from shaking. The two of us waited outside the emergency room before the doctor finally stepped out. When I saw the solemn expression he had on his face, my heart skipped a beat, and the words I wanted to say died at the tip of my tongue. In the end, Dominic was the calmer one between us two. “Doctor, may I know how she is?” The doctor let out a heavy sigh. “We've managed to save her, but we're not whether or not she'll be able to wake up. She's not out of danger yet, so we can only take one step at a time.” Then, after a beat, he added, “Still, it's best for you two to be prepared for the best case and the worst-case scenario.” Those words slammed onto my chest and weighed down on me like a mountain. I could not breathe. In a while, they pushed Monica out of the room and sent her to the ICU. It was a fate crueler than anyone could imagine—both the grandmother and the grandchild were toeing the line between life and death. “Dominic, do you think that Mrs. Scott will recover?” I wanted a confident answer from him; I wanted him to say yes so that the terror in my heart would subside. However, Dominic never replied. He only hugged me again. I watched her still form through the window from the outside in silence, my heart was in turmoil.Perhaps the only one who could motivate Monica to pull through was Nicholas. I then turned to Dominic. I knew there was only one thing I could do, which was to ask for his help to see if anyone knew anything about Nicholas' condition. “Let's go outside. I have a favor I want to ask.” Once we were out of the ICU, Dominic and I stopped in the corridor. I pursed my lips as my heartbeat quickened. I did not know if Dominic would be furious to hear my request, for I would be asking him to look for Nicholas. Nevertheless, I had to put those worries aside, for it was an urgent situation. “You should know about what happened to Nicholas, right? Could you send someone to find out his current situation? That's all I ask for. I just want to find out how he is and if he's in mortal danger.” I dared not pause between my sentences, fearing that he would interrupt me before I could finish voicing my thoughts. Yet, the more I talked, the darker Dominic's expression became. His sharp gaze was as if he was trying to peer into my soul. “This is the favor you want to ask for? What does Nicholas' incident have anything to do with you?” I hastily explained, “No, that's not it, Dominic. The one who's lying in there is Nicholas' grandmother. She passed out because she heard about Nicholas' incident. I was thinking that if we find out what happened to Nicholas and reassure her that he's fine, maybe she'll be able to make it through this hurdle. Although I've only seen Mrs. Scott three times, she had been really nice to me. I... I don't want anything to happen to her.” Right as my words left my mouth, the atmosphere seemed to have turned tense. Dominic pursed his lips, and he narrowed his eyes. At that moment, I could not tell what he was thinking about. I could only say, “Don't overthink it. I just want to help a friend, Dominic.” All of a sudden, he spun around and walked away. It took me a long second before I could snap back to my senses and run after him to stop him. “Are you angry? I'm only doing this to make sure Mrs. Scott gets through this and nothing else. Dominic, don't be like this. Please,” I pleaded in a soft tone as I grabbed his arm. “Let go.” His cold tone only made me tighten my grip. I even pouted and cast him a miserable look, hoping that he would relent. “Dominic...” Unfortunately, he seemed unfazed. “I'll telling you to let go.” At that, I stared at him for a while before I slowly released him. Then, without hesitation, Dominic walked off again. I could only stand in the corridor and watch his retreating figure as a wrathful fire burned in my chest. How can he be like this? I told him why, but he still refused to help! How can he be so heartless? Regardless, I did not let myself simmer in anger for too long. It was pointless, after all. Moreover, I was more overwhelmed by the worry I felt for Monica and Nicholas. Why does everything have to happen all at once? The stress is pushing me off the cliff. However, I dared not leave the hospital. I was afraid that I might not be able to come back in time if anything were to really happen. Hence, I stayed outside the ICU for another two hours and a little more before Calvin suddenly called. To my surprise, he came bearing good news. “Ms. Zanetti, I've found the hospital that Nicholas is at. Do you want to visit him right away?” The moment I found out where he was, visiting him became my priority. Thus, I quickly made arrangements with Calvin. Right then, the nurse came over, about to check Monica's status. I then asked for her help to keep a closer eye on her. A while after I went to the hospital's entrance, Calvin came in his car. Once I entered the car, I urged him to speed up. Almost half an hour later, the car came to a stop. Calvin and I then walked into a luxurious hospital. While we were waiting for the elevator, Calvin told me, “Ms. Zanetti, Mr. Hartnell has told me that you can only stay here for ten minutes. Once the ten minutes are up, I'll have to send you back.” I froze. “Dominic was the one who told you to find out where Nicholas is?” Calvin nodded. “That's right. But Mr. Hartnell doesn't seem like he's in a good mood. Not long after he returned to the office, he lost his temper twice. That's why, Ms. Zanetti, it's best if you don't linger here for too long.” I was lost in my thoughts for a good while. After hearing Calvin's words, I started to regret how I had called him heartless. “Has he eaten today?” I quietly asked. Calvin shook his head. “Mr. Hartnell said that he's not hungry. He never even touched the food I bought for him.” Instantly, my heart ached. He did not care for his health at all. He barely slept a wink the night before, he had not eaten anything, but now he was back at his office.
