The Second Love
Dominic's gaze was a piercing one, and it felt like he was studying the soul in the center of my body. Nervous, I cleared my throat and deliberately cleared my throat before mumbling, “Dominic, I'm telling you the truth.” He then slowly smoothened the wrinkles on his clothes as he continued, “So, does that mean that you know you've done wrong now?” At that, I slapped a remorseful look onto my face. “Yes, I know I've made a mistake.” Finally, Dominic grinned before he walked back to his desk. I stared at him, confounded. Does that mean he has forgiven me? Is he not angry anymore? However, Dominic soon returned with a stack of paper and a pen and smacked them onto the table in front of me. I tilted my head to the side, perplexed.“I'm afraid that confessing your mistakes verbally is of no use. It'll be better if you write a letter of denunciation to reflect on your mistakes. I don't need a lengthy one; just ten thousand words is enough.” My jaw dropped. Is he fu*king kidding me? Does he really want me to write a ten thousand word letter of denunciationto reflect on my mistakes? Is he expecting me to come up with a thesis? He is even giving me paper and a pen too! What is he trying to do? Is he seriously telling me to write it all by hand? “I... I can skip that, can't I? It's not like I'm an elementary school kid. I know and will remember what I've done wrong.” “Fifteen thousand words.” At that, I nearly bit on my tongue in my shock. What's with the increasing word count? “Err... It's hard to write it by hand. Why don't I do it on the computer instead?” “Twenty thousand.”I was close to tears. I truly was. I could only pull the stack of papers closer to myself in absolute despair. “Fine, fine. I'll write ten thousand words, okay?” In the next second, Dominic's finger appeared out of nowhere, and he wiggled it in front of my face. “It isn't ten thousand anymore, but I don't want to put you in a difficult spot. So, I'll just ask for fifteen thousand from you.” For a moment, I wondered if I was a tourist in a foreign land. Who in the world changes his mind as quickly as he does? “Another word from you, and it won't be as simple as just a fifteen thousand words report.” Dominic's words instantly dismissed my thoughts of trying to beg for mercy. Sighing loudly, I then picked up the pen. What a piece of shit! He's just trying to torment me. Dominic was like a mean supervisor. The moment I stopped writing, he would shoot warning glares at me. By the time I managed to squeeze out several hundred words, I felt as if my soul had left my body, and my brain cells had all died. Unable to stand it anymore, I threw the pen on the table and walked toward Dominic before slamming my palms on it. Dominic did not speak, but he stared at me with an apathetic smile. I shuddered, but I somehow steeled myself and said, “Do whatever you like, but I'm not going to keep writing this anymore. If I keep doing this, I'm going to just keel over and die! I will do what I want!” I bit down on my lower lip after I said those words, feeling like a silly lamb walking right into the wolf's mouth. However, I really could not continue writing the letter anymore. Bring it on! “Right, right. Well then, I'll make it quick for you.”Dominic closed the folder in front of him loudly before he stood up and patted his clothes. “Let's go.” “Where to?” I blurted out before I could fully come back to my senses. “We're going to a place to make things quick for you. Don't worry. I'll make sure you'll manage to still be on the side of the living world.” The grin on Dominic's face was a gleeful and toothy one, but somehow, it was like a wicked smile from horror stories to me. When I saw him reaching the doorway, I gritted my teeth and followed him after grabbing my bag. When we entered the elevator, I took a deep breath before latching onto his arm. “Why don't we have a meal first? I'm hungry.” I can delay by having a meal first, right? Dominic turned to smile at me, and his arm wrapped around my waist. “You're right. We should eat first. We'll only gain energy after we eat.”I paused in my tracks, almost losing my appetite. He made it sound like it was my last meal. After exiting the office, Dominic led me to a nearby restaurant. He went into a frenzy and ordered a table full of food. I actually quite liked that restaurant. If it was another time, I would have definitely cleared half of the dishes by myself. However, whenever I thought about how I was going to be the fish on the cutting board for him, I lost my appetite. On my way back, I was in a daze. I was wailing internally about the doom that waited for me. As it turned out, I was right. It was a miserable fate for me. Dominic's physique was unlike others. In the end, by the time he was done, the only energy I had left was to breathe in and out. The next day, I was rudely awoken by Shannon's call. In a despondent voice, she told me that she still didn't know what had happened to Nicholas. When I answered her call, I was still groggy. Despite that, I remembered what Jake had told me the day before. He had told me to keep Nicholas' condition a secret from the others. If the one on the other end of the line was someone else, I would have taken the secret to the grave with me, but it was Shannon. I was certain she would not blabber it to another person. Thus, after a moment of contemplation, I told her what I knew. It was a way to console her by telling her that Nicholas was out of danger. Right as I succeeded in consoling Shannon, Dominic's quiet voice sounded from behind me. “Who was that?” I jumped. I saw no one beside me when I woke up, so I thought he had gone to work. It turned out I was wrong because he was clearly at home. That meant Dominic must have gone for a shower earlier. His hair was damp, and the towel was wrapped around his waist. At the sight of him, I subconsciously pulled the blanket higher to wrap it around me like a worm and its cocoon. The R-rated events from the night before were still playing in my mind. If he wanted to repeat what we did the night before, I would certainly go mad. “Shannon called.” Dominic said nothing about it as he took out fresh clothes from the wardrobe. A sigh of relief escaped me. So he's going to work. That's good to know. I'm scared that he'll stay at home for the rest of the day. Before he left the room, he walked over to grab my chin and said, “I'll have Calvin keep an eye on Nicholas and his grandmother, but you're not allowed to visit him sneakily. If I find out that you haven't been listening to me, you'll get it from me again.” I was speechless. What's the matter with him recently? It's a kind gesture from him, but why is he making it sound like it's anything but that? “I know. I won't go anywhere today.” With that reassurance, Dominic left, and I lay back on the bed. It was not as if I could rise anyway. With my eyes half-lidded, I soon returned to my dreams. After some time, my phone rang again. Without bothering to open my eyes, I answered it. “Lili, I'm Ms. Porter. Do you remember me?” My brain was still doing its best to start up, and I could not comprehend which Porter or Hatter she was. “Who? Have you gotten the wrong number?”
