The Second Love

Chapter 185 Surprise Galore

We might've been too loud, for Monica roused from her sleep at this hour. I couldn't help but glare at Dominic. Leaning over, I asked in a low voice, “Mrs. Scott, why did you wake up? Were we too noisy?” Monica sounded a bit nasal as she had just woken up. “No, I'm just parched. Lili, why are you still here? What time is it?” As she was thirsty, I got up to pour some water for her. However, Dominic reacted swifter than me and poured her a glass of water from the jug on the side table. I took the glass from him and gestured for him to wound up the bed. In a careful manner, I helped Monica up and fed her the water. “It's still early, around three in the morning. Mrs. Scott, have some water before you go back to sleep. Be careful, it might be a little warm.”Monica took two sips slowly. She then lifted her head to look at me before turning to Dominic. “Who is this young man?” I thought over the question carefully and decided to be honest. “This is my boyfriend. He got worried that I had to spend the night in the hospital alone and came to keep me company.” Ah, now Mrs. Scott won't want to set me and Nicholas up anymore. Alas, Monica didn't seem to believe me. She seemed surprised and asked dubiously, “Your boyfriend? Lili, do you have a boyfriend?” I nodded. “Yes. We've been together for some time.” As my voice was firm, Monica was stunned. She fell silent and lay down slowly. I pulled the covers up for her and realized she was sighing like a balloon being deflated. Though I felt bad, it was better to clear up the misunderstanding as soon as possible. After all, Nicholas and I weren't dating. Once Monica fell asleep, I tugged Dominic to the bed, and we both sat down. Patting his thigh, I whispered, “Lie down and try to catch some sleep.” This time, Dominic lay down without protesting. Now, I couldn't go back to sleep. Taking out my phone, I wanted to see if there was any update from Shannon. Yet, I didn't receive any WhatsApp messages. There was also no update on Nicholas' Twitter. In the dark, I shot a worrying glance in Monica's direction and prayed that Nicholas would be safe. Not long after, Dominic woke up. He wanted me to lie down, but I refused. Thus, we sat side by side until the first light of dawn peeked out over the horizon. I yawned and sat up to stretch my stiff limbs.Monica was still asleep. I didn't want to wake her up and dragged Dominic out of the ward. “Wait right here. I'll buy some breakfast for us.” Dominic took my arm. “Stay here. I'll do that.” Without giving me a chance to reject him, he spun on his heels and strode out. I had no choice but to watch him leave. Something occurred to me as I returned to the ward. The water in the jug must've been cold by now, so I grabbed it to refill it with warm water. “Lili,” Monica called out the minute I stepped into the ward. “Good morning, Mrs. Scott,” I greeted her. “Wait a minute. I'll get some water for you to wash up. My boyfriend went out to buy us breakfast and will be back in a jiffy.” Sighing, Monica uttered, “Oh, Nicky's such a disappointment. What a pity you're now someone else's girlfriend.”I immediately assured her, “Don't worry, Mrs. Scott. A lot of women adore Nic. He'll definitely get you a perfect granddaughter-in-law.” Monica sounded disappointed. “All right, I'll have to wait till that happens. Lili, if you're ever single, please consider Nicky and give him a chance.” Nicholas was her grandson, but she was asking me to treat him as a backup. Finding it silly, I told her, “Mrs. Scott, my boyfriend will be back soon. Don't say that to him and make him jealous.” Monica winked. “Got it. I'm not a blabbermouth.” We chatted for a while before Nicholas returned with breakfast. After helping Monica to finish her breakfast, exhaustion took over me. I yawned and moved my shoulders. “Lili, you've been here the entire night. Go back home with this young man and hit the hay. There are plenty of doctors and nurses here at the hospital. I can ask for their help if I need something.” Before I could say no, Dominic parted his lips and reminded me, “You should catch some sleep back home. Staying up for the whole night might take a toll on your body.” “But Mrs. Scott is alone...” “I hired a nurse aide. She'll be here soon. If you want to keep Mrs. Scott company, go back home and take a nap before coming back. Besides, I'm also tired,” he concluded. Obviously, Dominic had everything planned out. As Monica kept persuading me to leave, I had to give in. The nurse aide soon arrived, and she seemed to be a nice elderly lady. Since she was hired by Dominic, I knew she'd do her job well. After relaying the doctor's instructions to her, I also reminded her to not let Monica go online or read the news with the excuse that the former needed more rest. I left my phone number with the nurse aide before I left the hospital. After bidding goodbye to them, Dominic and I returned home. When Dominic was in the shower, I texted Shannon to remind her to update me about Nicholas' situation. Then, Dominic and I went to bed. I had no idea how long I'd been sleeping when my ringing phone woke me up. Thinking it was Shannon, I grabbed my phone before realizing it was an unknown number. Groggily, I answered the call. “Hello?” “Ms. Zanetti, I'm Mrs. Scott's nurse aide. She just passed out and was sent to the emergency room.” At once, I sat up and my drowsiness gone. Even Dominic opened his eyes at the commotion. “Wait up, Laurel. I'll be right over!” I scrambled out of bed and put on my clothes in a hasty manner.“What's wrong? Did something happen to Mrs. Scott?” Dominic asked me. “Yes, she fainted suddenly and was sent to the emergency room. I need to head there now,” I replied and my voice sounded extremely anxious. Dominic stood up and put on his clothes without saying anything to me. At the hospital, I saw the nurse aide, Laurel, sitting outside the emergency room. She looked really crestfallen. Panting, I demanded, “What happened? Mrs. Scott was fine when I left in the morning. Why did she suddenly pass out?”
