The Second Love

Chapter 184 Stay With Me

Stunned, I blurted, “You're back home?” “I asked you first. It's late. Where are you?” He seemed annoyed, so I answered, “I'm at the hospital. My friend's still not here.” Dominic demanded, “Who's that friend? Why isn't he or she at the hospital?” I had to explain, “Uh, something came up, so I offered my help.” “Which hospital?” Blinking my eyes, I asked him hesitantly, “Are you coming over?” “Of course. Cut the crap and tell me which hospital.” I didn't really feel like telling him, but if I refused to do so, he'd get more upset. He might even misunderstand. In the end, I told him the hospital's name after failing to come up with an excuse. What should I do? This is giving me a headache. After Dominic's call, I forgot to call that employee from Flash and sat on the bench, staring into space again. Shortly after, I received a WhatsApp text. It was from Shannon, who informed me that Nicholas' fan club had started investigating the matter. She'd let me know if something came up. It belatedly occurred to me that I hadn't called that employee from Flash. Now that Shannon was on it, I should just wait and see what she could dig out. I prayed fervently that Nicholas' fans would speed up the search. As Dominic wasn't here yet, I clicked into Twitter, intending to check Nicholas' Twitter account out. Everyone had left comments expressing concern over his injury on his last tweet. I relaxed slightly when I saw a new tweet posted by his account announcing that he was currently receiving treatment. There was another tweet promising to post the updates in the future. He should be all right since he's already receiving treatment, right? “What are you staring at?” Dominic's voice rang out without warning above me. Shocked, I locked my screen instantly. Rising to my feet, I forced out a smile. “I was just reading the news.” Dominic stared at me for a long while before asking, “I thought you had to stay with the patient? Why are you sitting outside?” “It's a little stuffy inside the ward, so I came out for a breather. By the way, how did things go? I sent you a text, but you didn't reply.” Dominic continued to appraise me for a few more seconds. Then, he said, “It went well. I was on the way home and didn't reply to your text. I had no idea you weren't at home. Are you going to spend the night here?” I was flummoxed. Someone had to stay with Monica to take care of her, and Nicholas was injured. I didn't have any updates regarding his condition and couldn't leave right now. “The patient's old, so I can't leave her in the hospital all by herself,” I explained. Dominic let out an exasperated sigh. “Should I praise you for your kindness?” I shot him a pleading look and shook his arm. “Let's wait for a little longer, all right? Just a little longer...” Instead of giving a definitive answer, he asked, “Just a little longer? What if your friend can't come? Will you come home with me?” I stuck my tongue out and fell silent, for I knew there was no way I could leave Monica alone. Dominic pinched my cheek and relented. “Fine. Call your friend again. If he or she can't make it, I shall accompany you in the hospital tonight. When will you stop being this kind?” Since he agreed to spend the night here with me, I beamed in a joyful manner. Feeling fully and wonderfully alive, I wrapped my arms around his neck and planted a kiss on his cheek. “You're the best!” No matter what, I couldn't bring myself to leave Monica alone in the hospital. It would be best to spend the night with her. “Hurry up and call your friend now,” he urged. As Nicholas couldn't answer his phone right now, calling him was of no use. I had to lie and said my friend was still busy and wouldn't make it here. He didn't question further upon hearing my answer. Taking my hand, he declared, “Isn't it cold out here? Which ward is it? Let's talk inside.” I pointed at the ward opposite me obediently. “Mrs. Scott is asleep. Keep your voice down,” I reminded him as we went into the ward. Dominic said nothing, but he kept his voice down and shut the door carefully. I checked on Mrs. Scott and cover her properly before I sat down beside the bed with Dominic. The ward was very quiet, so we said nothing. I was hugging Dominic's arm. After a while, he took off his coat and draped it on me. He then pulled me into his arms. “Why did you take off your coat? It's freezing at night. Don't catch a cold.” “Don't move,” Dominic uttered and tightened his arms around me. I felt my heart swell in sweetness from his caring gesture. Softly, I answered, “When it gets cold, put on your coat.” “Mm. If you're sleepy, close your eyes and get some rest.” I wasn't sleepy as my mind was preoccupied. Now that I was in Dominic's arm, listening to his powerful but stable heartbeat, I settled down and closed my eyes. Before long, I drifted off to sleep. When I woke up groggily, I realized I was on the bed for lodger. Dominic's coat was draped over my body. He was sitting beside the bed and propped his head up on one elbow. He wasn't moving at all, so I wasn't sure if he was asleep or not. I whipped my phone out to check the time—it was not even three in the morning. I had only slept for slightly over two hours. In a careful manner, I sat up and made to drape the coat on Dominic's shoulders. The coat had just touched his body when his voice rang out, “Why did you wake up? It's still early.” “Did I wake you up? Come and sleep in the bed.” I lowered my voice. “Go to bed.” I knew he was tired, so I took his arm. “I'm not sleepy. Hurry, come and catch a wink.” Turning at his shoulder, Dominic stated, “Let's sleep together, then.” His words caught me unaware. I immediately gave him an exasperated pinch. “We're at the hospital.” Dominic grinned. “I know we're at the hospital. I didn't mean anything. Do you have something in mind?” I found his teasing remark hilarious and absurd at the same time.
