The Second Love

Chapter 183 An Accident

The first time I met Monica, she thought I was Nicholas' girlfriend. Even if I explained that we were merely friends, she didn't take my explanation to heart. Now, I had upgraded from girlfriend to future granddaughter-in-law. As it was a terrible misunderstanding, I had to ask Nicholas to explain to Monica so she wouldn't get upset when the truth was revealed. Besides, I had gotten back together with Dominic. He hated Nicholas and kept asking me to stay away from him. If a rumor started, I could imagine how upset Dominic would get... It would be an ugly sight... I couldn't really explain anything now except offer the soup I bought earlier to Monica and change the topic. “Mrs. Scott, have some soup while it's still hot.” Alas, Monica was one unpredictable old woman. She took the bowl of soup from me and winked at the other lady. “Let's drop the topic. Lili's shy. It's all my grandson's fault. He still hadn't got her to say yes yet.” The friendly lady chimed in right away, “Young girl, good men are rare nowadays. You should say yes as soon as possible.” I did not know how to react to their enthusiasm. Both Monica and the lady's earnest looks made me extremely uncomfortable. I squirmed in an awkward manner under their gazes. Taking the still full jug, I told them I'd be refilling it before scurrying away. Ugh, that was bad. Sitting down on the bench in the hallway, I was about to call Nicholas again when my phone rang. Seeing Dominic's name on the screen, I suddenly felt guilty. I had just been matched up with some other guy earlier, and now he was calling me. Could that be a coincidence?Patting my chest, I calmed down a little before answering the call. “Hello?” Dominic's deep voice rang out. “Are you back home?” “No, my friend's busy, so I'm still at the hospital,” I responded. “Why? Are you done with them already?” There was a slight pause on the other end before Dominic's reply came, “No. Still preparing dinner for now. I might be late tonight, but don't stay too long at the hospital. When your friend arrives, go back home at once, get it?” “Yes, I'm not a kid, so don't worry. I know how to get home without getting lost,” I assured him. Initially, I wanted to continue chatting with him, but someone called his name and we had to cut the conversation short. After the call ended, I stared at the phone for a moment. Strangely, though Dominic's voice seemed calm enough, something told me that he was in trouble. This wasn't the time to ask him any question, so I had to hold back my concern. After a while, I headed back to the ward with the water jug. Monica promptly teased me when she spotted me. Though Nicholas' name wasn't mentioned, it was clear that she was talking about him. She only stopped when I was on the verge of losing my patience. As Monica changed the topic, I gladly chatted along with her. I could join any conversation as long as it wasn't about Nicholas. The clock soon ticked past nine. Nicholas still hadn't contacted me, so I was stumped. Do I have to spend a night in the hospital? It's actually fine, but what shall I tell Dominic? What if he disagrees? I can't leave Mrs. Scott alone in the hospital. I was stumped. What kept Nicholas busy? Even if he's busy filming, he needs to rest, right? As Dominic didn't call me at this hour, he clearly hadn't gotten rid of those people. I couldn't help but wonder how he was faring. Monica was already asleep as she was tired. I wanted to call Dominic but was afraid he couldn't answer my call, so I texted him instead. “Hiya, how's it going?” I waited for a while, but he didn't reply. Reluctantly, I exited WhatsApp. Bored out of my mind, I logged into my Twitter account. I typed the events that happened in the past few days out as though I was writing a diary. Scrolling through the huge chunk of text I had just typed out, I couldn't help but chuckle in delight. I then scrolled through Twitter's feed. Immediately, the top trending topic gave me a shock.Award-winning actor Nicholas Scott fell from a high altitude. His condition remains uncertain. I covered my mouth in alarm and nearly dropped my phone. Turning to look at a sleeping Monica, I couldn't stop my hands from trembling in shock. Luckily she didn't get a chance to go online today, or the news would upset her immensely. No wonder he didn't return my calls nor answer my texts. Turns out he was injured! Slowly, I tiptoed out of the ward to ask someone about his condition. After a brief deliberation, I gave Shannon a call. She was Nicholas' top fan and had contact with all his fan clubs and stuff. Perhaps she knows something that I don't. Shannon had no idea about Nicholas' accident as she stayed up to watch TV and only slept at noon. When she found out Nicholas was hurt, she shrieked so loudly and almost blew my eardrums out. I cut the line and blanked out, not knowing who else to call. In the end, my gaze landed on the contact “Flash's PIC” on my phone. This person was a staff of Flash Media and had contacted me a few times previously. Hmm... he might have news of Nicholas. I hesitated slightly before deciding to give him a call. Before I could make that call, Dominic's call arrived. When the call connected, he demanded in an icy tone, “Why aren't you home at this hour? Where are you?”
