The Second Love

Chapter 182 A Close Shave

I shot daggers at him. “Can you be more serious?” In response, Dominic shrugged in a nonchalant way. “I've always been serious.” Looking at how he was behaving, I didn't know whether to laugh or cry. “Forget it. If Camille's parents beat you up, come back home and I'll put on some medication for you.” Before Dominic could formulate a reply, Calvin chuckled lowly. “Calvin, keep your eyes on the road.” Dominic's words served as a warning to Calvin and cut his laughter short. “Stop it. It isn't that serious. Even if her parents are upset at me, they won't really do anything.” In fact, his words made sense, so I promptly relaxed.“Hey, drop me off after that corner.” “Why are you getting down here?” “I want to buy some cakes. There's a bakery not far ahead that sells amazing mousse cake,” I replied earnestly. Dominic gave me a look. “You've just eaten lunch, and now you're going to buy more food?” I glared at him. “It's none of your business. Can't I buy it for dinner? Please stop, Calvin.” After bidding goodbye to Dominic, I got out of the car. “Go back soon. Don't loiter around.” Here he comes again. It feels like my father's talking to me. I merely waved and spun on my heels to leave. After buying two slices of mousse cakes at the bakery, I bought two sponge cakes for Mrs. Scott.Yes, besides buying cakes, I wanted to visit Nicholas' grandmother, Monica. When I was waiting for the light to turn green earlier, I recalled Monica's house which was two streets away. I had always wanted to visit her, but something would always come up and I ended up not doing that. Now that I was free today and happened to be nearby, I should just go and pay her a visit. After all, she had been very nice to me. It was still early, and I didn't have to prepare dinner, so I had plenty of time to read the script. With the cakes in my hand, I strolled along the road until I reached a fruit store. I entered the store to buy some bananas and kiwis. When I reached Monica's house, the door was left ajar. It took me by surprise. Did Mrs. Scott forget to close the door? I pushed the door open and was about to call her name when I saw her lying facedown on the ground. Shocked, the stuff in my hand dropped to the ground. I dashed over to her and pulled her into my arms. “Mrs. Scott... Mrs. Scott! Wake up!” As Monica didn't respond, I called the emergency number at once. I dared not delay a second. I then called Nicholas, but he didn't answer his phone. I had to send a text to inform him about the situation and told him to call me back as soon as possible. It took a whole twenty minutes for the ambulance to arrive. I was so worried and kept checking for her breath, afraid that she'd die any minute. When we arrived at the hospital, Monica was sent into the emergency room, and I had to wait outside. Shortly after, the doctor finally came out. I went to him and asked about Monica. When he informed me Monica was all right, I heaved a sigh of relief. The doctor told me that Monica suffered from a stroke. As luck would have it, she was sent to the hospital on time. If she were to be late for a few minutes, she might not have made it. I thanked the doctor profusely as fear lingered in my heart. Luckily I decided to visit her today, or the consequences would be horrible. I recalled how Nicholas reacted when I mentioned his parents back then. It seemed that Monica was his only relative left. Monica was wheeled into the general ward, but she was still unconscious. I refilled her jug with hot water before sitting down beside her bed. Some time after, Dominic called and asked me whether I was home. I couldn't say I went to visit Nicholas' grandmother, so I made up an excuse that I was visiting someone I knew at the hospital. Dominic merely reminded me to go home before it was too late. After hanging up, I gave Nicholas another call. He hadn't called me back or answered my texts. I called him a few time but he didn't pick up. I stayed there until five in the evening. There was no news from Nicholas, and Monica was still unconscious. Worried, I went to the doctor to ask about her condition. The doctor assured me that it was normal for her to wake up later than usual, for she was in her old age. He told me not to worry as she was fine. It was obvious that Monica wouldn't be leaving the hospital anytime soon, and there was no telling when Nicholas would contact me. Besides the daily necessities, I wanted to buy some food so she wouldn't starve the moment she regained her consciousness. However, I couldn't well leave Monica alone in the hospital. There was a lady taking care of a patient beside me, so I asked her to look after Monica for the time being. I also left my phone number with her so she could contact me if there was an emergency. The lady agreed without hesitation. I stepped out of the ward and headed to the mart I spotted earlier outside the hospital. After buying some items at the mart, I went to a nearby restaurant and bought some chicken soup. I was waiting for the food to be ready when the lady in the hospital called me, saying that Monica had regained consciousness. When the food was ready, I scurried back to the hospital at once. Back in the ward, Monica had indeed regained consciousness. She lay back against the pillow and chatted with the lady. Since Monica seemed healthy, I was relieved. To be safe, I asked the doctor to run a check on her. She was to remain in the hospital for now. The doctor left some instructions before he left. Though Monica was in the hospital, she was in high spirits and all smiles as usual. Taking my hand, she said, “Lili, thank you for everything. If you hadn't come and visit me today, I wouldn't be here now.” She sounded thrilled to see me. I gave her a disapproving look. “What nonsense is this, Mrs. Scott. You're healthy enough to live over one hundred years old. By the way, I bought chicken soup for you. Please eat some now. Also, I've called Nic, but he's busy. However, don't you worry for I'll call him again later.” The lady cut in, “Ma'am, this must be your granddaughter-in-law. She was really worried about you earlier.” Monica replied in a cheerful tone, “She's my future daughter-in-law.” I clamped my lips shut awkwardly, not knowing how to respond to that.
