Revenge of the Rejected

Chapter 95

Angela was on edge as she watched Charles tip the glass of wine over. Just one more tilt, one more tilt. Suddenly everything seemed too slow. Why was he so slow just to drink one glass of wine? Then his phone rang and he dropped the glass of wine immediately. Angela swore under her breath, squeezing her skirt tightly in frustration. He had been so close, even the tiniest gulp was bound to do something. Charles held up his phone in hopes of it being James calling, but it was not. Instead, it was Vera calling. Charles sighed, and picked up the call. "Vera." He called as he moved to sit and in doing that, he accidentally pushed the glass of wine off the little table and it fell to the ground, shattering and sending wine splattering on the sofa. Angela shrieked as she watched the glass of wine seep onto the carpet close to where it shattered. There went her poison. Charles stared at her, wondering why she was overreacting over a glass of wine. "Couldn't you have been more careful!?" She shrieked and Charles took in a deep breath. "Vera, I'll call you back." He said, staring at Angela and ending the call. "You're so clumsy, you know that!? How could you spill that!?" Angela shrieked once more. She knew she wasn't supposed to get as mad as that as to Charles it was nothing but a little glass of wine, but she couldn't help getting furious and emotional. It had been so hard to poison that glass and she had had so many hopes at stake. Mark would be disappointed in her when he found out she hadn't been able to poison him successfully and just the thought of the disappointed look in his eye made Angela feel sick. "Excuse me? It's my glass, my wine. Why are you getting so emotional at that?" Charles asked, barely concealing his temper in his voice and she hit the sofa with her fist. "Can't you…. Can't you… Agh! Can't you see my shoes!?" She asked, pointing to her shoes. She had been lucky to spot the flecks of spilled wine on the white sneakers she had on and it was the only excuse she had for her anger. "Do you know how much they cost? Are you crazy!? How could you be so careless?" She asked once more, breathing heavily and Charles had had enough at that point. "Would you mind leaving? I'm rather busy." He said, and she furrowed her brows. "What?" She asked."I have somewhere to be and you can't be in my house without me unless you have some other purpose." He told her, and she bit her lip then rose to her feet. "Why?" She asked although she wasn't asking because of what he had just said, rather she had asked why he was refusing to die. What would it have cost him to take just a little swig of that drink before it got wasted on the floor. "Angela, I'm busy. I don't have the time for this. See yourself out in the next few seconds. You have no right to go anywhere else except the door." Charles said heading to the door and signaled the maid who nodded and walked towards Angela, ready to escort her out of the house. "Don't you dare touch me!? Agh!" She screamed in anger and picked up her bag, storming in the way Charles had gone. She walked briskly but by the time she was out, Charles was in his car. "Charles…" She called but he zoomed out. "Shit, shit, shit! Damn!" Charles called Vera and she picked almost immediately. "You sounded a little urgent earlier, did something…" "Someone withdrew all my money. James ended my call and isn't available." He said curtly as he drove out, heading for the bank. "Wait what? Oh my God, how… how did that happen?" Vera asked, flustered. " Wait, wait. You don't suspect James, do you?" "Damn, he has my passwords, I discussed withdrawing my funds with him and he knows I'm about to buy a building. I'm going crazy here too. I don't want to believe it but he switched his phone off immediately after ending the call." Charles explained hastily. "Oh my God…. I'll… I'll go to his house and see him right now. Jeez, this is huge. Charles, don't do anything crazy for now. Let's confirm things first." She urged him and he took in a deep breath before she ended the call. Charles got to the bank and made enquiries immediately about the issue but he was told immediately that the withdrawal wasn't done at the bank, neither was it done at the Automated Teller Machines from their jurisdiction. Charles checked his bank app and saw the records of a transaction wasn't there also so it meant the withdrawal wasn't done from the app also. Then his phone rang as he got back into his car. It was Vera. "James isn't at home. His door is locked." She informed him, sounding a little scared. "Damn it!" Charles exclaimed and drove as fast as he could to James' house. He didn't know if going there would be helpful but that was the only thing on his racing mind. His heart thrummed loudly and his fingers shook. He swore when there was a little traffic and hit his steering wheel hard wishing to be teleported to wherever James was. When he finally got to James' house, he was surprised to find James standing next to Vera who was sitting on a pavement and next to James, were grocery bags. "What's happening?" James asked, spreading his hands and Vera stood up, walking towards Charles. "James had a low battery and it died on him, then he went to the grocery store to get some goods so he wasn't able to charge his phone and he hadn't heard you properly, I just explained everything to him now and so I called a friend of mine who's skilled at stuff like this and she said… she said it wasn't a normal transaction." Vera explained to him, staring at her feet. What were they trying to say? Charles was dumbfounded. It felt like his world was crumbling. All his hard-earned money, gone like that?
