Revenge of the Rejected

Chapter 220

Charles couldn't deny that he felt a little nervous. It felt like lead had been thrown into his stomach, and was weighing him down. His head seemed to be ringing, and it almost felt like he could feel the blood rushing in his veins. He kept on swallowing, as Andrew sat in front of four different computers that looked a little weird. Charles couldn't get used to a computer looking like that. After typing long enough to keep the tapping going in Charles' head, he went to meet him, and began to stick some circle-like things to his temples and forehead. The circle-like things had long wires which connected to the large computers, and Charles suddenly got the strange feeling that he was about to be electrocuted. He knew he wasn't supposed to get cold feet. After all, he was a man, but still, it did nothing to douse the flames of fear and insecurity growing within him. "Is it going to hurt?" He finally asked, and Andrew chuckled. "Nah. Not a bit." He assured him, and went back to the computer after fixing them properly to Charles' head. He sat, and began to type rapidly once more. Charles waited patiently for something to happen, but nothing happened yet. "Jeez, this is hard to decode." Andrew muttered, still typing quickly. Charles looked at a mixture of green letters, numbers and symbols strolling up on the computer, and wondered if there wouldn't be any mistakes. What if he ended up going crazy like Harley Quinn? Andrew turned, and adjusted the wires attached to Charles' head, and Charles decided to confide in the confident look on Andrew's face. Andrew knew what he was doing. After all, he was an expert. "Okay, this is bad." Andrew said, just after Charles decided to be rest assured. "What's bad?" He asked, immediately, trying to rise, but Andrew stopped him with a raised hand. "Just stay where you are. It's trying to root into your head, like a kind of virus. Jeez, Artificial intelligence is getting quite strong this days. Stronger than I expected." He said, and his typing became even more furious. Just then, Charles felt something bright flash in front of his eyes, and he closed his eyes tight from the impact of it. When he opened it, he gasped. "What's the matter?" He heard Andrew ask, but there was no Andrew with him. He was surrounded by water, and cliffs. The stretcher he was laying on, was replaced by a large rock, and the rock was suspended in air. On all sides of him were trees that stood on cliffs, and below were dark, churning waters with giant jagged rocks in them that were capable of tearing a man apart. He became scared. He was high up in a place like that with no clue how he got there or how he would return. "What's going on?" He heard Andrew ask, and looked around. "Where are you? I can't see you." Charles said, frantically, trying to ignore the sound of the waves crashing. "I'm right here. Wait, what do you see?" "Waves, rocks, water, cliffs. It's crazy…" "No, the damn system didn't do that." Andrew said, incredulously, hitting his hand on his desk. "What happened?" Charles asked. "It put you in an illusion. If you accept it, and believe it's real, it will find a way to delve deeper into your head. You have to accept it's not real." He said, and Charles looked around him, feeling like he was going to go crazy. "Are you sure it's not real. I can hear the sound, feel it, and can see it." "That's because it's taking advantage of everything, and fooling your brain. Your brain is making you think you're feeling wind, and hearing things… We have to do something real quick. I didn't know the system had gotten this smart." He said, frantically, and Charles got really scared. What if the system managed to control him in such a way? It would make things even harder for him, and the people around him. Andrew's voice began to feel distant, although he could hear the furious sound of Andrew typing. "Your voice is getting distant. I can't hear well." Charles said, feeling more terrified by the moment. "Come down from the bed!" He heard Andrew say. "You kidding me!? That's a suicide mission! I can't do that! There's water underneath me, I'll fall!" "No man, you're not falling. You're still in the room. The floor is just like three feet away." Andrew shouted, and his voice sounded like echoes. Charles looked down at the dark waters, and their dangerous rocks. "Do it, Charles, you're still in the room." He said to himself. "Andrew… Andrew…" He called, but didn't hear anything. When was the last time his heart had beaten as fast as that? It felt like it was a living being, ready to tear out of his chest, and pull him into a world of terror. He took deep breaths, looking at the merciless waters, roaring and crashing at the rocks. "Okay, it's not true, Charles. It's not. You're still in the room." Charles said, trying to motivate himself, and banish the bad thoughts from his mind. With a deep breath, he steadied himself, and rose on the rock. The breeze shook his hair, and threatened to blow him away, but it didn't. Then, he jumped, closing his eyes. Charles landed on solid air, and crashed. Just as he crashed to the floor, the illusion around him crashed, and he saw Andrew looking at him, breathing heavily. "Ow…" he said, touching his elbows, and the both of them began to laugh. Charles felt like a complete fool. He wondered what he would have looked like, trying to jump from the bed like the ground had a hole in it. "Did I look stupid?" He asked, laughing. "Yeah, yeah, you did." Andrew replied, and they continued laughing. Then he heard a loud click in his ears, and bold letters arranged themselves in front of him. SPEND A HUNDRED MILLION DOLLARS WITHIN TWENTY-FOUR HOURS. The old system was back.
