Revenge of the Rejected
While they were all on their way back home, Charles had put a call through to his doctor, just so the doctor would either get to his house before him or a few minutes after him. “How did this happen?” Vera asked, inquisitively, finding it difficult to make sense of how the bomb in James’ arm, stopped beeping without Longman’s invention. “Vera, it’s nothing to think deeply about. The main thing is that he’s free now, and what we need to do next is to remove the bomb from his arm.” Charles didn’t want anyone to suspect too much that there was something fishy about it, and even he himself had not understood totally, how the system works now. Not long after they got home, the doctor appeared as well, and he injected James with an anesthetic. “Do you feel anything here?” The doctor asked, poking that part. “No… I just feel numb around that part.” James responded, looking a bit nervous about the process of removal. “Alright, just relax. As you know, it’s not going to hurt, and I’m going to give you good painkillers which would help you fight the pain after the anesthetic wears off.” The doctor assured, calmly. “Alright then.” James uttered, then looked away as the doctor began his work. Charles patted him, and also walked out of the room to give them some space. As he walked out of the room, he headed to the living room where Vera was. “Did you inform Amelia about what happened?” Charles asked as he sat on a couch. “No. She called James on the phone, but I told her we were currently in a meeting, and James was busier than I was.” “Okay, that’s much better. She’s going to start worrying if she finds out that James is undergoing a little removal.” Silence fell, and reigned in the living room for a while until Vera decided to speak. “That time when you ordered me to leave, what did you plan to do in that room with James?” Vera asked, looking really curious. “Vera, why are you being inquisitive? If we were meant to die, do you think I’m going to allow you to die with me? I hope you know it’s not your place to get too curious?” Charles reminded her with an arched eyebrow. He was already having enough trouble by being confused on what kind of upgrade the system had, so he wasn’t in the mood to entertain attitudes that would seem more like his worries are being added to the list. Neither does he want to feel so uncomfortable, being asked questions he’s not supposed to give answers to. “I apologize.” Vera spoke, realizing that she was going too far. “What are the views we’ve gotten so far, on our personal page, and the requests for our new products?” Charles questioned, trying to totally bury the seemingly weird discussion they just ended. “Uhm… So far… We have five billion views, and we’ve gotten many requests for the different products we displayed.” Vera responded as she went through her iPad. Charles nodded his head in satisfaction, with his index finger on his philtrum and his thumb on his chin. “When James get better, I’m going to need him to start the nullifying process of the contract I had with Longman.” “But… it was a contract, signed by 2 parties. It’s going to seem almost impossible to nullify it.” “Longman didn’t go through the contract carefully. In one of the terms, I had stated that when I wish to nullify the contract, I could.” “Wow. That’s… that’s really nice.” Vera exclaimed, and her face brightened up. “He doesn’t deserve the money that comes in with the requests for these products because his people didn’t really contribute to the creation of those products.” “That’s very true. At least, he has gotten a bit more recognition. He can do with that.” Vera said, nodding her head as she reasoned the wisdom in Charles’ actions. “You’re right. So, all we need to do is to let the employees know that they have a lot to do. We need more products to process at least, half of the requests we’ve gotten.” “Alright then. Tomorrow, I’ll inform them on how much work they have, ahead of them.” “Much better. I should have a meeting with them, too.” Not long after he spoke, the doctor walked down the stairs, walking towards them. “So, how did it go?” Charles asked, hoping for a positive answer, even when it was meant to be. “It went well. But it’s kind of amazing that that kind of complicated bomb was disconnected without even a little damage.”“You know about stuff like that?” Charles asked, wondering how his doctor got to know it was a complicated one. “I was once mad about techs in my younger days. Well, let’s be thankful there was no damage.” “Thanks doctor.” Charles appreciated him, and the doctor took his leave. “That scumbag! So, he wasn’t going to let us off the hook completely.” Charles cursed at him, in anger. “It means even when we complied with what he wanted, and he removes the bomb, James would still be sort of affected.” Vera said, realizing it. “Exactly! That son of a bitch! He should just hold on until I get to him. He’s going to regret he tried to mess with me.” Charles said, under his breath, then headed upstairs to see James. James was lying on the bed, and staring at his bandaged arm at intervals. “Why are you staring at your arm, James? It’s perfectly fine.” Charles said as he walked in. “I know right? I guess I’m just so nervous about the time when the anesthetic is going to wear off.” James spoke, revealing his fear. “I understand, but you’re going to need to man up. You don’t have to worry; Longman is going to regret he ever did this.” Charles assured, with a determined mind. Then his phone beeped, and a text which got him really curious, and at alert, came up on his screen.
