Revenge of the Rejected

Chapter 192

Fear seeped into her, dominating her vessels like blood moving in water. All she seemed to think of was death. The cold gun pressed further into her neck, and she gasped. A hand slipped over her baby protectively, and that hand shook like a leaf. It wasn't just her hands shaking, her bones were trembling. Images of different dead people popped up in her head, and she began to wonder if the other women were dead, or just hidden somewhere. What would happen to her? Would they all wake in the morning, and meet her dead? If she screamed, would the figure run or shoot her? Not knowing what else to do, she did the most natural thing everyone in that situation was expected to do. "Please… please, don't. I… I have a baby coming. Please… please I beg you. I won't scream. I don't know you. Can you… Can you just let me go?" She pleaded in a little voice, but the gun only pressed deeper into her neck, making her almost scream. "Wanna scream?" The voice came out in a strangled whisper, and she shook her head immediately. "No. Was just… just scared." She replied, in a small voice. "Close the fridge." The strangled whisper came again, and she did as she was told. The figure took off the gun, and she slowly turned to face him. She wanted to scream, but the figure raised its hand to point the gun at her once more; in that moment of terror, Elise raised both hands to her lips to hold them like they weren't capable of holding their sound; magically, they hit the gun, and it was sent spiraling onto the floor. She seized that opportunity, and screamed as loud as she could dare. She turned, and began to run. Two times, she fell over, but immediately pushed open the door of her room, and locked it, still screaming. Damien was already up, and about to run out. "Elise… Elise! Are you okay?" He asked, and she screamed again, as her tears crashed down her face. Damien bent, and hugged her tightly. "You're fine. You're fine, we're fine. If you want any damn thing, wake me up. I'll go with you. Don't you ever go anywhere alone. Hear me?" He cautioned, and the next second, everyone was knocking on their door. He raised Elise from the floor, and hid her behind him, before opening the door. Elise brushed back, running to the bed, and Damien stopped them. "No one is to go near her. We don't know who the damn culprit is!" He shouted. "Alright. We won't go to her. Elise, did you see the person?" Layla asked, looking terrified. Elise kept on shivering and mumbling, unable to say a word. "Elise, please say something!" Samantha shrieked, looking like she was about to burst into tears. "She was almost taken. Don't scare her. Everyone, back off. Return tomorrow. For now, she's not saying anything." Damien said, shoving them backwards. "Elise, please talk. Let us know." Layla pleaded, but Elise didn't speak. She only kept on crying, and shaking. Looking like she had seen a ghost. Due to Damien's restlessness, they were all shoved backwards, and left to wonder. "Let's return to our rooms. Damien said tomorrow, we shouldn't pressure her." Charles said, and with reluctance, everyone began to disperse, except for Layla who was intent on following Vera. Charles and Vera had heard the scream, but they had been too slow. Before they got there, all they saw was Elise dashing into her room. They had looked around, as the others began to come out, but couldn't spot anyone unusual. "I don't think I'll sleep again." Layla said to Vera. "I'm going to have terrible dreams. Why didn't Elise just tell us? This is suffocating. I can't seem to think of anything else." She continued, looking like a mad woman, with her hair scattered, looking like she'd been having a nice sleep. "Who is the damn son of a bitch?" She unexpectedly exploded. "Just come out! Come out and face us all! Why hiding, coward? Are you scared a couple of women and men will beat you up? Well, it's best you never come out because I'll kill you first!" Layla shouted, and began to swear heavily. Looking like she was trying to use up all the swear words in her dictionary. "Stop. It could make you the next target." Vera said, and Layla's hands flew to her mouth. "Let's sleep." Kent said, trying to hold her arm, and drag her away, but she didn't budge. "I'm not going unless Vera is going with me." She said in a little voice, and wrapped her arm around Vera's arm, looking around. Everyone took glasses of water, and eventually, Kent had to stay with Charles, while Vera stayed with Layla. All through the night, they talked about the culprit, and it felt like they'd never be able to go to bed. Vera even had dreams. Series of dreams about her being caught, strangled, and hidden in a basement. Countless times, she woke gasping, and Layla was right by her side, holding her and sleeping peacefully. She had made such a fuss about being unable to sleep, but there she was, sleeping like a newborn. ~ The next morning, everyone was quiet. Elise still seemed to be in shock, and didn't want to say a word. They had asked all manner of questions, but she only thing she did was to stare fixedly at anything her eyes fell on, and stay mute. Damien claimed she was still in shock, and tried to push everyone away. All that seemed to matter to him was that she was fine. So breakfast was silent. Charles felt exhausted. He didn't know how he had ended up being tangled in that mess. Things were not going the way he had intended them to go. Then, without warning, Elise parted her lips, and spoke slowly. "Last night…" her words sounded weak, and Charles could sense the fear in them. She continued, "It was a man."
