Revenge of the Rejected

Chapter 191

"Did you hear that?" Charles asked, and the both of them waited, with their eyes wide open, and ears alert, in case the scream came again. "I definitely heard someone scream." Vera said, still listening in. "And it was a lady." Charles said. "Yeah, it's definitely Sarah." Vera added, and they both left the room. Everyone else seemed to have struggled to put on clothes, so they could make it to the living room. "Did you all hear that?" Layla asked, looking around. "Also, I can't find my cousin. Do you think he was also…?" She was asking, but just then, the door opened, and Kent walked in. He looked at everyone from face to face, and observed something had gone wrong. "Is there a problem?" He asked, still looking at them warily. "We heard someone scream." Someone replied. "Sarah?" He asked. "It was definitely Sarah. I know her voice more than myself." Sarah's husband said, as he paced around. "Does anyone think they can figure out where the sound came from?" The pregnant woman asked. "Not sure. It just came out of nowhere." Layla replied. "Yeah." Vera added, and they searched all the rooms once more, but there was still no trace of Sarah anywhere. "We're calling the cops tomorrow." A man said, and everyone agreed with it. The next morning, it was all anyone could talk about. The news had spread around the suites, and Vera packed with a heavy feeling in her heart. She wished for Sarah to be okay, and she also wanted to know how things turned out that way. They left the room to have breakfast before leaving, and met the people discussing. "Alright. Who else is joining them?" A woman asked, and Layla raised her hand. "I will." "Very good. Five people are enough." The woman said."Five people for what?" Vera asked. "To drag the police down here. If we don't go to their office, they will never believe this story. They'll think it's some made up stuff." She said, and Vera nodded. She sat next to Charles, and he picked up the telephone, so he could order breakfast. Others also came to the table, and took turns ordering breakfast, while the five who had volunteered to call the cops went to do their work. "What did you order?" Vera asked Charles. "Shrimp pasta." "That's cool." She commented, and gave a sigh, before asking him."Where do you think she is? Is there a kind of basement here?" "No. There's a floor below us, so that would be like dumping her into the room below us." Charles said, and Vera bit her lip. It reminded Vera of Math. She was tired of solving, but couldn't not bring herself to stop solving, until she got her answer. Shortly after they had been served, Charles received a call from Longman. "Does he want to ruin my appetite? Why does he call only when I'm eating?" He muttered in frustration, and Vera gave a light chuckle. "Even the thought of him makes me want to throw up." "Oh, please don't." Charles pleaded, closing his eyes, as he remembered the stench of her puke when she had thrown up in the car because of all the packed, stagnant air with heat. Charles picked the call. "Good morning, partner." Longman said, and Charles sighed. "Good morning, Mr. Longman. Is there a reason you have for calling me?" He asked, and Mr. Longman chucked. "Why do you always repeat the same thing like you're a robot?" He asked. "I am very busy, and would like you to go straight to the point." Charles said, and Mr. Longman chuckled irritatingly once more. "I only wanted to remind you…" Charles bit his lip hard, not wanting to give a reply because things might go wrong."Remind me of what? James?" Charles asked, impatiently. "Yes, yes." "I never forgot for once. You can be rest assured." He said, and Longman chucked. "Have a nice day." "He's doing it on purpose." Vera said, immediately the call ended. "He wants to anger, and irritate you, so you'd give him cause to do something you wouldn't like." She said, and Charles took a deep breath. "I know him too well." Charles replied. Shortly, Layla and the men returned with the cops, and they observed everyone. Checking their bodies, and their things. They looked for any sign, the smallest trace that would point anyone out as the prime suspect. They checked the CCTV, and when they tried to suggest she jumped out the window, they all mentioned the screams. "Alright, no one is leaving. You're all going to be questioned tomorrow, if we search and see she's still nowhere to be found." "No one? We ought to leave today." Charles piped up. "I'm sorry, but you'll have to be a little patient with us. Your cooperation at this point is crucial." He said, and Vera placed both hands on her waist. "You're not suspecting us, too, are you?" She asked. "If by tomorrow, we haven't found her, then all of you will become prime suspects." He said, then turned to one of his men, "Write down their names." He ordered, and left. They were passed a pen and a notepad, on which they were to write their names and surnames, and the officer made sure everyone had written their name. "Anyone with a fake name will be arrested immediately. Because these names will be checked." The office replied, and there was silence. Immediately the officer left, noise broke out. "So we can't leave now?" Vera asked, looking guilty. "I guess we have to wait till tomorrow." He replied, and Vera folded her lips guiltily. "I'm sorry. We should have left yesterday." She said, but he shook his head. "Don't blame yourself. It's not your fault." He replied, and she nodded, "It's just one more day." He added. "What could have happened?" A woman asked. "Where could she be?" "I clearly heard her scream." "I agree that all of us should be interrogated quickly. This is bullshit." Layla blurted out. "Who's playing such a prank on us?" "Catch a drink with me, will you Vera?" Layla asked, latching herself onto Vera's arm. "I'm sick of all this. It's like I'm going crazy." "I think I need a drink, too." Vera replied, and after tapping Charles, so he could know she was leaving, she and Layla went down to the cafeteria. "What in the world is going on in your suite?" The plump woman who Vera and Charles had met the first night they had arrived at the inn asked. "Oh Madame Boyle, it's crazy there." Layla said, as she and Vera settled into a chair close to the counter. "What exactly happened?" Madame Boyle asked, serving them drinks. "A woman went missing in our room. The camera didn't catch her leaving, yet we can't find her anywhere in the room." Layla exclaimed. "All these going on at my inn, yet I don't know?" Madame Boyle asked, looking shocked. "The cops came today." Layla added. "Yes, I was so surprised to see them." She replied, throwing blocks of ice into the glasses, then serving them. The three of them continued to chat, until Kent walked up to Vera. He was looking at her directly, and there was no way for Vera to avoid him. "Can I… can I tell you something? I need to see you." He said, and Vera looked at Layla reluctantly. Layla smiled, and patted her hand. Then Vera stood. "What is it?" She asked.Kent's eyes roamed over Layla and Madame Boyle. "Here?" He asked, and Vera inhaled, then marched away from the chairs and tables over to the other side of the building close to the staircase. "There?" He asked, pointing further away from the people, so she went with him. "What is it you have to say?" She asked. "Actually, I didn't want to say it, but Layla told me you were supposed to leave today, so I just thought…" he paused, and bit his lip, seeming like it was hard for him to continue. Vera waited, and at last, he looked at her, and spoke. "I'm interested in you." He said, and Vera's brows knitted together. How could someone like that like her? She took a step back, and began to blink continuously, searching for what to say. "Uh… actually. I… I appreciate you saying that and all, and… it's really cool. Thanks, but I… I have someone I'm seeing." She lied. Something about him just creeped her out, so she didn't want him to have high hopes, or hope for a possibility that she could like him back. She felt guilty lying, but also felt it was better that way. "Someone?" He asked, looking tame. "It's not Charles. It's someone else, but… thanks." She said, gave a little smile, then walked away. She didn't want to stay there with him staring at her with such intensity. That night, she thought of telling Charles, but decided not to. It wasn't needed. She slept, and the next morning, she was awoken with a loud shout. She jolted up from her bed, as did Charles, and they both rushed out of the room. "My sister's gone!" A young man said. "I've searched everywhere. I've been to the security men too. They didn't catch footage of her living. She went to get a snack last night when I was about to sleep, and didn't return, but I was sleeping, so I didn't know." The man exclaimed, looking scared. Charles and Vera looked around slowly at all the faces. One out of them all was the criminal.
