Revenge of the Rejected

Chapter 193

"A man?" Damien asked. "Great! Now I guess all the women can leave, right?" Samantha asked, getting to her feet. "No one is leaving, until we find his wife, and my sister." Katie's brother said, also getting to his feet. "We tell the cops first about the new information." Sarah's husband said, and that they did, putting an end to a fight that could have happened between Samantha and Katie's brother. The cops were notified, and they interrogated all the men, asking them questions. Elise refused to partake in the questioning, saying she couldn't recall anything except that the figure was bigger than her, had a really strong grip, and wide shoulders. All the men had wide shoulders, and strong hands, so even the ones with missing women were suspected. At last, they concluded on having nightshifts to stop any more misery from happening, and to possibly have better chances of stopping the criminal, in case they criminal was being fueled by an uncontrollable urge to kidnap. Charles was the first one to stay on nightshift, and all through the hours of the night, no one came, except the women taking turns to drink water, eat snacks, or do any other thing. "You know, I was thinking it should be women who do the nightshifts." Layla said, taking a chilled bottle of water from the fridge. "Why?" Charles asked. "Because we can scream faster, and also the culprit is a man, so we need to plan without the men being there. We can plan our shifts in a way that if there's an emergency, someone can easily call for help. But just imagine if you're the culprit, isn't it easy for you to kidnap me?" She pointed out. "Then everyone will point fingers at me when you go missing." Charles replied. "It's very easy for you to say you slept off." "If I were the culprit, would I be able to go around saying I slept off every single time a female went missing? Also, we do this because we're stronger, and need to catch the culprit, so everyone can go home. "I'm a man that can't get involved in something like this. If the news gets wind of this, it won't be so easy for me. Also, I have a lot of things I need to do, so I'm definitely siding with the men doing the nightshifts. That jerk will definitely crawl out sometime.""I knew you were someone important. Could tell it from your appearance. Just everything about you." She said, and took a large gulp of water. "You're a lawyer?" She asked. "No." "You speak like one. Well, then I'm counting on you. Don't… don't let anyone of us go missing again. It's quite terrifying. If I were Elise, I wouldn't be able to say a word for a week. I get scared easily, you know." She said, and returned the bottle of water into the fridge with a sigh. "What a vacation." She muttered, and left. The next day, Charles was more restless than ever. He wanted to leave, but couldn't. Vera was also frustrated, and although she wasn't scared because Charles was by her side, she could feel the fear of the others, bouncing off them like echoes bouncing off walls. Then, she was about searching for Layla in her room, but hadn't opened the door properly when she saw Kent pacing, with his thumbnail in his mouth. He seemed restless, and she quickly left. When it was time to have breakfast. He still looked restless. His hands seemed to alight on every wrong thing. He asked for bell peppers, but took salt instead. Also his eyes seemed to have no focus. He was acting very suspicious. Then she texted Charles on her phone. *All day, Kent has been restless. What do you think is going on?* She sent, and Charles got the text immediately . *I don't know. I've been watching him, too. He just seems overly restless. But let's not suspect him yet. Not until we have concrete evidence. We need to be sure of things.* *But we're wasting a lot of time here. We have lots to do.* Vera sent back, and Charles sighed. *We have to bear with everything.* He typed back, then added, *Soon… soon.* The police searched the inn and the cameras once more. It turned out the camera wasn't of much help. Everywhere was dark, and the figure had been in dark clothes. When the fridge light had torn through the darkness delicately, they had only seen Elise's terrified face. The other had been shielded by the cloak. "Please, try to remember. Isn't there anything you think will help us?" They asked Elise, but she only repeated the same things she had said. "He was big, had tough hands, and wide shoulders." She replied, still looking a little shocked. "Anything else?" They asked. "I don't recall. I was scared, so I… I didn't really pay attention. I couldn't see much. The whole time my heart was pounding in my ears, and… and making it feel like…"She paused, and seemed like she was about to start crying. "What about the voice? Did you happen to hear the person's voice?" She asked, but shook her head. "The person was whispering forcefully. I couldn't… I couldn't make out the real voice." She replied, and the despair that filled everyone's sighs, was depressing. Charles left the living room, and sat in the room, wondering who it could be. None of the men seemed like they could be culprits, not even Kent, who was always quiet, and seeming to have some unidentified problem in his head. He decided to call James, and after a brief chat with him, he felt a little light-hearted. He had wanted to share his thoughts with James, and everything that was happening, but didn't want him to worry about the possibility of Vera being taken. Just then, the system began to form words, and he furrowed his brows, wondering what it was about to demand or remind him of. HIGH INTELLIGENCE QUOTA WILL BE REWARDED IF CURRENT CASE IS SOLVED. Was… was the system telling him to solve the case?
