Revenge of the Rejected
“What!” Charles exclaimed in shock. He felt like a rock had been left to sink down in his heart as he heard the shocking news from this stranger. To him, it felt like it was a waste of time, and he was so annoyed at himself for not sending someone trusted, over to this place instead, to check if the man still lived there. “Yes. But what’s surprising is the fact that before he left, he paid five years rent more, for this house. So, no one else lives here, and he hasn’t come back since then. In fact, I don’t think he’s ever coming back.” The woman uttered. Charles almost felt dizzy because all these were too sudden for him to digest, and it wasn’t good news either. He staggered back a few steps and James held him back. “Are you okay?” “Yeah, I am.” Charles replied, then he exhaled sharply. “Do you perhaps have his contact or an idea of where he stays, now?” “No, I don’t. He never really shared private information, so we’re all clueless. Charles and James both went back to the car, and Charles couldn’t tell what emotions he was having at that moment as his emotions changed from anger to resentment and from resentment to sadness, etc. For a few hours, they were clueless on what next to do and they just sat, staring into blank space. The driver was so famished, but he had no choice than to hold it in, hoping that Charles would remember they hadn’t eaten for a while now. “It is understandable that he moved out, two years ago. Probably he wasn’t comfortable anymore or sort, but what’s baffling is the fact that he paid rent for five years more, which means, there is three years left before his rent expires.” James finally spoke, listing the absurdities out. Charles sighed as he placed his index finger on his philtrum, thinking hard of what this could mean. Suddenly, he raised his head up. “I think he paid five years upfront because he wants to keep the house for a reason. I’m certain there are still some things left in this house. Come on, let’s go check it out.” Charles urged James. But as they got out, Charles moved to the driver’s window. “I think you should find a place to get us all food. Here is my card. The pin code is 3819.” Charles said to him, then left. The driver felt joyful about this. “Alas!” He muttered out in a low tone, and drove off. Charles and James walked into the empty house slowly, and everywhere was filled with dust. They turned on the lights to help them see better, but all they saw were home appliances. “There must be a reason he left this place open.” Charles voiced out, scanning everywhere. “You’re right, boss. It could be he paid five years upfront, maybe enough time for you to find out about this place. Then he must have certainly left something for you, here.” James suggested as he looked around as well. They checked inside different vases, but found nothing needed to see. Even the rug wasn’t left untouched. But the dust on it made them sneeze hard and continuously. “This is really a puzzle.” “I understand he must have done that because he knows I’m not the only one who would try to find this place.” Charles went into the bathrooms to look around as well, while James was processing the words which Charles said. All of a sudden, he gasped in shock and his eyes widened. It hadn’t occurred to him that this could be a trap as well. If Mr. Lincoln had had the key to the locker space in his custody for a while now, he could have seen the address note. This was in two ways. It’s either Mr. Lincoln framed it all up because he knew Charles would still have his hands on it or he had seen the note and had come to scan this place just like they were doing, now. James hurried up to Charles in the bathroom to let him know of his thoughts quickly just so they could decide if they were to leave this place immediately or not. “Boss!” James called out to him as he walked into the bathroom which Charles was in. But he noticed Charles was dipping his hand into the water closet tank. “Did you find something?” James asked, out of curiosity. “I think so.” Charles responded and then brought out a note. “It’s written in Greek, but I’m convinced it’s something I need to know. Maybe his new address which he doesn’t want anyone else to find out.”“But… but…” “Look. It’s a pamphlet, but he wrote down the Greek words in a way they don’t stand out, but I can tell.” Charles said to James as he showed him. James realized it as well and they both walked out of the house. Charles’ driver came back right in time, so when they got into the car, they ate first. After eating, Charles brought out his phone to surf the internet for the meaning of the Greek words he had put together. But the network connection was bad and the page kept loading for minutes. “How about we try my browser?” James offered, and they tried, but it brought out the same result. The driver also offered his and it was the same. The network was so bad that it got so frustrating. “We can’t keep waiting. We don’t have much time to waste. Doesn’t anyone here know how to decode a Greek word?” Charles asked desperately, knowing fully well that if they knew, they wouldn’t have allowed him to try using the internet. “Maybe we should go out of the car and move steps away to search for signal.” James suggested and Charles did just that. “Oh, hold on! I think it’s working!” Charles raised his voice happily, but he had spoken too soon. It went stuck again and even after trying so many tricks, they still couldn’t get to the internet, neither could they put a call through to someone. “Hello. I think I may be able to help you.”
