Revenge of the Rejected

Chapter 149

After listing out what he wanted Anthony to do, Mr. Lincoln ordered for Anthony to be freshened up and well taken care of just so he could look presentable, and so it would be easier for him to carry out the job he asked him to do. Then his phone rang and he discovered it was a call from Michael. “And what’s the feedback?” Mr. Lincoln questioned as he crossed his lap. “Actually, I don’t think they are there either. The employees checked their check-ins and out, and it seems your family have already checked out.” Michael informed him. “Oh, I see. I guess they must have gone off to another place to have fun. They are quite the fun type. When they are done, they’ll get back to me. For now, I have a different job for you.” Mr. Lincoln spoke. “And what job is that, boss?” “I need you to go in search of Mr. Thompson. He is one old, annoying frog lawyer whom I really need to get rid of.” “Okay, noted boss. I’ll be expecting the location of the person.” “Sent it already as a text. Do a really good job.” Mr. Lincoln said to him. “You can count on me, boss.” Michael assured, and Mr. Lincoln hung up the call. He was glad because everything seemed like they were going to work out perfectly this time, and he would do anything to keep pushing the perfectness into progress. The next day, Charles got up early in the morning and got prepared for the trip he was going on. He packed up his clothes, shoes, and other documents that could be necessary. Then he walked down the stairs to the living room and Martha came over to greet him humbly. “I’ll be going on a trip and may not be coming back this week, so I need you to take good care of this house. Also, take good care of yourself.” “I will, sir. Is there anything you might like to eat before you leave the house?” Martha asked, out of modesty. “Well, no. I’ll be out, soon and I need nothing to delay me, so there’s no need for that.” Charles uttered, then brought out his phone, about to call James as it was almost 8 and he had not shown up. The doorbell rang before he could press his thumb on James’ contact, and Charles decided to hold on to confirm if it was James.Martha hurried towards the door, and opened it as soon as she confirmed it was James. “Hello boss. I’m here.” James said as he cleaned off the sweat from off his face. “Why are you sweating so much?” Charles asked, inquisitively. “Well, I didn’t take my car along, since we’ll be going in your car, so there was a bit stressful movement.” “You could have done it the easier way. There sure is an easier way, but you chose the stress.” Charles rolled his eyes and shook his head. Then he grabbed his box handle, and Martha helped him out with another luggage of his as they walked out of his house, and then placed everything, both his luggage and James’ in the trunk of his car. Then they got into the car, and the driver started the journey. “I feel it’s going to be a long journey.” James uttered as he leaned on the car’s backseat. “Why do you think so?” Charles asked, folding his arms while concentrating on James. “Well, that’s because it’s a town. Most towns are faraway.” “You’re right. But as far as this particular one is, we are going to get there in a few hours. We can’t get there in the evening.” Charles spoke and then brought out his phone to pass time while on their journey. Throughout their journey, neither James nor Chares spoke to each other. They both engaged in different activities on their phone until they got to their destination. “Wow. This is really surprising.” James spoke as he looked around. Crickets were chirping and the night sky was with a few stars and without the moon, so where they were wasn’t particularly bright. “Cut it out. I didn’t know we were going to get here by nightfall as well.” Charles voiced out, aware of the fact that James was indirectly referring to the time when Charles assured him, they were going to get there in a few hours. Although, there were a few hiccups on the road. There was a really tough traffic congestion and their car broke down once and it took them a while before they got someone to fix it up. “So, this building is his. Let’s go over to knock.” Charles urged, and then they both walked over to the house, but when they were about to knock, they noticed the door was slightly open. They decided to ignore the fact that it was open and they could just walk in, so they knocked a few times and there was no response. “Should we just go in?” James suggested, looking desperate. “No, it’s wrong. He might have gone out to get something and forgotten to lock the door up. Let’s get into our car to wait for him.” Charles uttered, then walked back to the car. While waiting in the car, they both realized that they hadn’t packed up any snacks whatsoever, and this was when the hunger pang began to kick in. “I thought we really planned well, but finding out no snacks and food around this street is so annoying. It’s also late already, and we won’t certainly see some shops open. I’m beginning to miss the city life.” James whined as he covered his face, sounding like he was about to cry. “Will you stop complaining? When it’s morning, we’ll get something to eat.” Charles snapped out, and James’ mouth went shut. While waiting for the man to appear and walk past their car, they didn’t know when they all slept off. James sat up abruptly as he woke up all of a sudden and discovered it was morning already. “Boss, boss. It’s morning.” He said as he tugged at Charles, lightly. Charles squinted his eyes and then rubbed them as it all came to his head that it was truly morning. The driver also woke up due to hearing their voice. Then both Charles and James got down from the car and walked up to the house, but the door was still open the way they met it last night. “Did someone perhaps break in and take him away?” James voiced out with his eyes widened. “Good day. Are you in search of someone?” A woman who looked highly inquisitive walked towards them. “Yeah. We’re looking for the man who stays here. He… He’s a lawyer.” Charles mentioned. He felt that if he mentioned the fact that the man is or was a lawyer, it could ring a bell, in case she had forgotten. “Oh! Mr. Thompson.” She voiced out like she just understood what they had requested of her. “Yeah… I guess. He moved out about two years ago.” The woman informed them.
