Revenge of the Rejected

Chapter 132

The anger Charles felt while he was on his way to James’ home instantly went down and he rushed towards him. Charles was quite confused about this sudden behavior. They were both on a mission and the next thing is he began to drink. Because Charles was aware he wasn't someone like that, he decided to be calm about it. “James, why are you drinking?” Charles asked as he placed his right hand on his back. And then James looked up at Charles, and shook his head like he was trying to awaken from his drunken state. “I'm sorry, boss. I have failed you.” He uttered, and that got Charles curious about what had really happened. He knew James was the type of man to ensure that he did his job diligently, so he had to get to the root of this. “Talk to me. What exactly happened? What put you in this state?” Charles questioned again, and James sniffled. “I… I feel ashamed to talk about it. Moreover, it's unprofessional of me to have bailed out when a serious mission was going on.” “James, I'm here as a friend now. Speak to me the way you'll speak to a genuine friend.” Charles urged, putting down his ego as a boss. James felt grateful to hear those words from Charles because he truly needed someone who could he share his pain to. “For a few weeks now, I had a girlfriend. Her name is Amelia and I have been eyeing her ever since we were young…” James narrated all that had happened until recently when she broke up with him. Charles would have felt disappointed in him, but he understood that James was human, and he also had his own life. “I understand you, James. But I do not want you to keep drinking because of her. Channel this energy into more work, and accomplishing goals.” “But it's not easy, Charles. I couldn't concentrate. I couldn't think about anything else. All I just wanted to do was to dwell in my sadness.” James sniffled as tears strolled down his eyes. “Look. I feel there's something she's not telling you. Maybe one of these days when you're free, if you can get to her, prove to her that you're concerned about whatever is going on with her and you will stick with her through thick and thin.” Charles encouraged him.James felt inspired by what Charles had just said and waited for an opportunity to see Amelia again. “Maybe that's what she has been expecting me to do all along.” He thought to himself. Then he rose to his feet and staggered a little. “I apologize for allowing my love life to mess with my work life. Please pardon me, boss.” “It's fine. I'm sure we'll get another opportunity. And as for George, if it's possible, I need you to get information on him on why he's back in the city.” “On it, boss.” “No, you should rest tonight. You can get back to work tomorrow.” Charles uttered, and patted James on the back, then headed out of his house. He also felt quite accomplished that he was able to make James feel much better than how he felt before. He wasn't an inconsiderate boss, so he at least wanted to sometimes be able to be relied on emotionally. As he got into his car, the system came up with a notification. SPEND 30 MILLION DOLLARS IN 24 HOURS. “Been a while, my friend.” Charles said in a low tone, so his driver wouldn't start thinking he was running crazy. But then, he hadn't thought of what he could spend the money on yet, but he was still calm, since he had 24 hours from now to spend it. “Hopefully this money came for a purpose I'll need, soon.” He thought to himself. On getting home, he dropped down on his bed, and his eyelids were becoming difficult to open. He had been stressed by the Lincoln's today, so all he could do was to sleep. The next day, Charles woke up to the bright rays of the sun, and he got ready for work at the Lincoln's home. He checked his phone, and noticed James had sent him a text. “Must be George's information. This man doesn't cease to amaze me.” Charles uttered under his breath as he opened his text message. “I couldn't get much details about George. The confidentiality around this was quite tight, so the only thing I got was that he left to another city, early this morning.”Charles smacked his lips and nodded his head. George wasn't really his concern now, so he didn't have to bother. After all, leaving far from this city was his advise to him. This time, Charles wasn't laying out his trap net for George. But next time, he might not turn out lucky. Charles got into his car in his disguise and as usual, his driver dropped him a distance far from the Lincoln's home. Charles walked down to the Lincoln's home and on getting there, he noticed there was full house today. They were all watching TV, and having the fun time of their lives. “He never created time for mom and I. Well, let's see how long this family moment lasts. Enjoy it while it lasts.” Charles said in his mind. “Andrews, you're here. Please tidy up this sitting room before you go on to garden the plants at the backyard.” Sandra instructed and resumed her focus on the TV while smuggling with Mr. Lincoln. Charles felt this surge of annoyance, but he tried his best to supress it. “So, honey. How has work been?” Sandra asked as she lowered the TV's volume. “Well, it has been good, but not great. There's this amount I'm targeting, but I need to invest in something as well to get that amount in the space of 3 months.” Mr. Lincoln replied. Charles was listening while cleaning the center table on which they had eaten different snacks on. “Oh, I see. Haven't you gotten any contracts lately?” “I have. But they aren't worth it. They are just going to waste my time. Only if I can lay my hands on a mind blowing deal, I'll go all in.” Mr. Lincoln wished as he sipped his juice. Right there, Charles smirked as an idea popped up in his head. “Right there. There's my chance.” He said to himself.
