Revenge of the Rejected
Charles moved closer to Mrs. Campbell with a confused look on his face. “What’s going on, Mrs. Campbell?” “Welcome back, Mr. Charles.” She smiled weakly. “I’m just glad that my name was cleared, and that I have been released. Thank you for ensuring that they released me today.” She appreciated him. Charles smiled, but he wasn’t satisfied with her answer yet, and he was waiting for more. “I’m grateful you gave me a chance to work in this beautiful home, but at this point, I think I may not be able to handle working here again. I would love to go back to my hometown.” She said to Charles, and gave the floor a long stare. Charles was a bit shattered because he knew he let her down, and she was no longer comfortable staying with him if she wasn’t able to gain his full trust. He didn’t know how to make it up to her even when he really wanted her to stay, but he thought deeply to himself that it could probably be for the best if she left. He couldn’t really trust people because of all the back stabs he had gotten so far. He had even once misunderstood James, and none of that was his fault. Charles let out a deep sigh, and held Mrs. Campbell’s hands. “I understand more than you think I do. As much as I want you to stay, and want to make things up to you, I would also like to respect your decision as I don’t want to let you down, further. But you’ve been a really good employee, and I appreciate you for that.” “You don’t need to appreciate me. I’m the one to appreciate you for the kindness of taking me in, and entrusting me with your home.” Mrs. Campbell uttered as she looked into Charles’ eyes. Charles smiled even if it wasn’t really within from his heart, and then he called a guard in. “He’ll take you to your destination. Allow me to at least do this as an apology for making you stay long behind those bars.” Charles pleaded. Mrs. Campbell was speechless, but she accepted Charles’ kind gesture once again. His guard helped her with her belongings, and they both went out. Charles knew that there was still time to assume his position as a lawn mower at his father’s company, but he wanted to rest from the little shock he had earlier. But he was going to get another maid, and hopefully the maid was going to be as real, and good as Mrs. Campbell was to him. James on the other hand got a call from vera who asked both of them to meet up at her house. “So, what’s up? Why the meeting, especially without boss.” James said as he sipped the juice which Vera offered him. “Well, did you hear what happened?” Vera asked, trying to confirm if James was ignorant of what happened, or he knew the full story. “What happened?” James asked, and adjusted himself on the chair to keenly listen to her. “Mrs. Campbell wasn’t the one who poisoned Charles.” “What! Are you sure about this? Where did you get the news from?” James inquired, looking taken aback. “Charles said it. And I think he went back home to settle things with Mrs. Campbell.” Vera uttered, and shook her drink gently. “Jeez. Mrs. Campbell must have felt really wronged. So, did Charles then tell you who the real culprit is? Because if he found out that It wasn’t Mrs. Campbell, then he must have known who exactly it is.” “I know right? But he didn’t say anything about that. And whoever this person is, he’s probably just hiding him or her, because I know him. He would have taken actions against the person immediately.” “You’re right, Vera. But anyways, let’s trust him. He always knows the right thing to do. If he feels we need to know, he’ll certainly let us know about that. Anyways, I have to go. I have some unfinished business to do for him.” James said, then downed the remnant of his drink, ready to leave. “Hold on. I have something in mind for us to do.” Vera said to him. “And what’s that?” James asked, feeling the intensity of the situation. “Come closer.” Vera urged, and he did. Then she spoke into his ears, and he nodded, looking really serious. Night fell, and Charles was at his balcony, sipping wine as he looked at the stars which were far away. Lately, he had had so many downfalls that whoever was watching his life like a movie would think it was the beginning of the end for him. Then he brought out his phone, and texted James. “I need you to gather people who can work as a house manager as I would love to call it.” He was going to interview them, and pick the best. He needed someone he could really trust as he knew that there would be days when he wouldn’t be home for days, and it was only someone good that could take care of his house without damages occurring. “Alright boss.” James texted back. Charles also had it in mind to greatly reward James because he had been a really transparent employee, and sometimes he seemed like a brother, and a friend. There was no way he would trade him for anything. If he were to trust people in his life, it would be Vera and James because they had proven their worth and loyalty times without number. Charles decided to go to bed, but as he dropped his wine glass on the bedside desk, he heard a shattering sound, downstairs. He became alert, and then slowly moved towards his door. As he got to his door, he opened it slowly and carefully. He felt that someone could be in the house, but what he couldn’t tell was who the person was.“I’m hoping this is all in my head.” He thought to himself. The sitting room was a bit dark, and as he walked downstairs slowly, he confirmed that there was someone in his apartment as he caught a whiff of a strange scent. Not now when he was without guards.
