Revenge of the Rejected
Charles could not believe his ears. He sat abruptly, and pressed the phone against his ear. “Did I hear your right, Mr. Grayson?” Charles asked again. “Yes. We can talk more on the reason if you’re able to make it to my office before I leave.” Mr. Grayson suggested. When he hung up, Charles stared into blank space, because he was still shocked by the news. Even if he wasn’t solely depending on the income from his partnership deal with Mr. Grayson, it was awkward to be the one to be cut off. “Is there anything wrong?” James asked, out of concern. “Drive back to Gray Tech company.” Charles ordered his driver, and he immediately made a U-turn. Then he turned to James, and sighed. “Mr. Grayson just informed me that he has to cut off our partnership deal. So, I need to go to his office to hear the reasons. Probably it might be something we might be able to fix.” Fortunately for Charles, there was no traffic congestion, so they were able to get to Gray Tech Company in no time. As soon as Charles got down from the car, he walked hastily to Mr. Grayson’s office. Mr. Grayson was about leaving when he got there. “I hope I can still be given time to hear what you wanted to say about this sudden change.” Charles said, hoping he would still be seen. “Yes. But not for long, because I have an important meeting to attend. Have a seat, please.” Mr. Grayson offered, and then sat down. “Thank you. So, what is the reason you decided to cut off the partnership deal?” Charles asked, inquisitively. “Well, it’s not forever. But it is until the pending issue gets resolved. About three of my funding companies, which I get my major money from to spend on investments, have hit rock bottom. So, I have to lay low for now.” Mr. Grayson explained, and then let out a sigh. “I have to leave now. My time is ticking.” Mr. Grayson said as he stood up. Charles stood up as well, and received a handshake from Mr. Grayson, and then they both went out of the company, and bade each other goodbye. “So, how did it go? Did he change his mind?” James asked, inquisitively.“No. For some good reason.” Charles replied, and got into his car. He decided not to see it as a lost cause, but as an opportunity to focus more on his own tech company. He was ready to give it his all, because he could foresee the great outcome that would become of it. Two weeks after, Charles’ tech company had progressed much more than other start-up companies. They were still furnishing the building to make it adaptable for the different machines, and technological products that would be brought in, or made in there. “So, how’s it going?” Charles asked James who had been supervising them for the whole two weeks. “Well, I must say we are extremely lucky to have found this set of people. They are really good at what they do, and they have so much passion for the goal you broke down to them. They created a mini robot that can serve as a fire extinguisher.” James reported happily to him. “Really? Oh, wow. Lead me to see it.” Charles requested, and he was shown the robot. He was quite pleased as he nodded in acknowledgement of their skillfulness. “I am really pleased with the progress so far. They really did well, and a get together should come up, soon, just to celebrate the progress.” Charles said to James as he looked around while nodding his head. “Sure.” As Charles looked around, his phone rang. Then he brought out his phone, and discovered it was an unknown number. “Here we go again.” He said, under his breath, and answered the call. “Wow. You answered the call. I didn’t know a man like you would answer the call. I guess the poor lifestyle still flows in your blood.” The caller voiced out, mockingly. “Who is this?” Charles questioned sharply as the caller was getting on his nerves. “Well, if you want to find out, meet me at the closest park to your house by 7pm.” The caller spoke, and then hung up. Charles squeezed his phone to an extent that if he had superpowers, the phone would have been crushed. He hated it when an unknown random person just out of nowhere begin to give him instructions. He would have ignored it, but he knew very well that for the man to have called, he definitely had something he wanted to see, or know about.James who noticed his change of expression, decided to ask him what was going on, but Charles didn’t give him a chance to, as he walked over to a few workers to examine what they were doing. After seeing enough of all they had done, Charles decided to leave. “So, you’re going back home, right?” James asked as he bent down to see Charles who had gotten into his car. “Not really. I have a meeting with someone. Will discuss the celebration date, later.” “Sure, no problem.” Then Charles’ driver headed off to the park which Charles had instructed him to go to. The sun was going down, so he believed he’ll get there before or by 7pm just as the caller wanted. “Sir, may I speak with you?” The driver broke the silence that reigned since they started the journey. Charles was quite curious to know why his driver had asked to speak with him, for the first time. “Yes, go on.” “Thank you, sir. Actually, I need a favor from you. My wife came down with a health issue, and it gets critical as weeks pass without the doctors doing anything to it. And they can’t do a thing without us paying a deposit, at least.” He narrated to Charles. Charles flashbacked to when his mother really needed help, but there was no one to help with her medical bills. Not even his father could help. “It’s fine. You can speak to Vera about it. I’ll tell her to attend to your needs.” Charles responded, and shut his eyes to relax. “Thank you so much, sir. I really do appreciate this kindness.” His driver kept on thanking him while ensuring that he was having his eyes on the road. As soon as they got to the park, his driver thanked him again, and Charles nodded his head. He checked his wrist watch, and noticed the time was 7:10pm/ “It means you should be here already.” He uttered under his breath. As he walked through the park, his eyes caught someone familiar, and to his surprise, he waved his hand at Charles. It was Carlos. Charles knew Carlos to be smarter than Tyson, so he wondered what Carlos was up to, and his purpose for this meeting.
