The Heiress Who Took Revenge

Chapter 653 A Short-Lived Reunion

The attic was secured by a heavy iron door, but it didn't take long for the men to pick the lock and force it open. The moment Nolan stepped inside and saw Eliza, he pulled her into his arms in a near-instinctive embrace. "It’s over now. I’m here." Nolan’s deep, steady voice instantly washed over Eliza, bringing a profound sense of security. It felt as though the terror of the last few days had been completely erased by that single sentence. "I knew it... I knew you’d come. But you fool! Were you set up?" Eliza pulled back slightly, her eyes filled with urgent concern. She needed to know if Nolan had followed Matteo’s instructions to investigate Nathaniel’s properties one by one. If he had, then Nolan was now firmly in the crosshairs of the entire Hartwell family. Being targeted by a pack of desperate outlaws meant he would never know a day of peace again. Even if they couldn't take him down, they would make his life an absolute misery. "Could you two hold off on the romantic reunion for a second? Let’s get out of here first, alright?" Colton scanned the surroundings nervously, terrified that Matteo’s men were lying in wait. Currently, everyone in the Hartwell family was calling for Nolan’s head, demanding an explanation. Since Nathaniel’s death couldn't be brought into the light of the legal system, they would undoubtedly come for Nolan in the shadows. If Matteo had an ambush prepared, they were in serious trouble. "Let's go. We're going home." Nolan gripped Eliza’s hand tightly, and she nodded back at him with firm resolve. As the group departed, a pair of eyes watched their retreating vehicles from a distance. "Are we just going to let them leave like that?" The assistant looked at Matteo with confusion. This didn't match Matteo’s usual MO. Eliza knew too much; even if they didn't kill her, she should have been kept confined until the situation stabilized."There's no need. Let them go." Matteo had originally stationed many of his men around the perimeter. However, knowing that Nolan would eventually track them down today, he had ordered a full withdrawal. Letting Eliza leave so quietly was the last act of mercy he would show. "Sincerity..." Matteo let out a self-deprecating laugh. That was something he simply didn't possess. Nor would he ever. Inside the car, Eliza fell into a deep sleep, exhausted by the ordeal. Nolan gently draped a blanket over her. From the driver's seat, Henry remarked, "Something about this feels wrong. If I were Matteo, I never would have let you take Eliza so easily." As heads of their respective families, they understood all too well how a businessman maximizes his leverage. If Matteo had killed Nathaniel, Eliza was a witness. He had no reason to let her go. Furthermore, the villa district had been completely deserted, almost as if he had cleared the way for them to rescue her. Once they arrived back at the Hayes estate, Nolan carried Eliza to her room and tucked her in. Only after ensuring she was safe and sound did he close the door and head downstairs to discuss the fallout with Colton and Lewis. "Tyson and Cramer are officially partners now," Lewis began. "And with Tyson marrying Elaine from the Lynn family, he's got serious backing. Now, you've fallen right into Matteo’s trap, and the Hartwell family isn't going to let this go. Henry can't help you openly. Even if Colton and I support you, there's no guarantee our parents will agree to it." Though they were the sons of their families, they didn't have the final say in major affairs. Their parents held the real power. The assistance they could provide Nolan was limited. If their parents decided to switch sides one day, the situation would become even more chaotic than it was now. As they spoke, Halbert arrived at the house with his entourage. Having heard that Eliza had been found, Halbert had rushed over immediately. Upon seeing him, Nolan and the others stood up."Where is my sister?" Halbert demanded, his brow furrowed. "Resting upstairs," Nolan replied. "Is she hurt?" "She isn't physically injured. A doctor is on the way to give her a full examination." "You two just got engaged and you already let my sister go missing," Halbert said, his tone icy. "Nolan, tell me—why should I trust you with her?" Nolan found himself unable to argue. Colton stepped in from the side. "It really wasn't the boss's fault this time... it was my failure to watch over her. Whatever you decide, we deserve it." "I'm taking my sister back overseas with me," Halbert stated coldly. "I don't feel safe leaving her here. You have a mountain of your own messes to deal with right now. I don't believe you can protect her. Do I make myself clear?"
