The Heiress Who Took Revenge

Chapter 654 A Temporary Parting

Nolan understood Halbert’s concerns all too well. Just then, Eliza’s voice drifted down from upstairs. "Don’t say that, Halbert. He’ll take you seriously." At the sound of her voice, the tension in Halbert’s brow softened slightly. He looked up to see Eliza descending the stairs. "This time it was my own carelessness," she said. "It had nothing to do with Nolan." "I’m not joking," Halbert replied firmly. "You’re coming back overseas with me." Eliza rarely saw Halbert look this solemn. Although he often spoke about taking her back, it was clear that this time, he meant it. "Why the sudden move? Is it just because of what happened with the Hartwell family?" To the Sue family, the Hartwells were little more than ants. A man like Matteo couldn't possibly stir up enough trouble to bother Tristan. Why did they have to leave now? Halbert didn't want to keep her in the dark; they were returning on Tristan’s direct orders. In a few days, it would be the anniversary of Emilia’s death, and Eliza needed to be there. Furthermore, they planned to inter Emilia’s ashes alongside their father’s. If there was another reason, it involved Saint Corp. Cramer was ambitious, and now he had partnered with Tyson. Tristan had recently discovered that Emilia’s death was linked to the person pulling the strings behind the scenes. Eliza’s presence overseas was mandatory. Upon hearing the reasoning, Eliza glanced at Nolan. They had only just celebrated their engagement, and now they were being forced apart. Colton couldn't help but interject. "Can't Nolan just go with her? Do you really have to separate the couple?" "Is there no better solution?" Lewis added, frowning. "Nolan and Eliza are newly engaged." "He has a mountain of his own messes to deal with," Halbert countered. "How is he supposed to look after my sister?" Eliza instinctively moved to argue, but Nolan felt that Halbert made a valid point. He placed a steadying hand on Eliza’s arm. "Eliza, go back first.""But—" "As soon as I settle things here in Westbrook, I’ll come for you immediately." Eliza wanted to protest further, but Nolan stopped her. "Listen to me. Right now, I have my hands full with the situation here. Trust me—once I’ve handled this, I’ll find you. You’ll be much safer overseas under Tristan’s protection." Nolan knew exactly what kind of position he was in. With Eliza here, he couldn't guarantee her safety. Especially now that he had offended the Hartwell family. Their criminal influence permeated every corner of Westbrook; if they targeted Eliza again, he would be at a severe disadvantage. For her safety, he had to let her go. "...Alright, I understand." Eliza took a deep breath. "I’ll follow your lead and go back for now. But you have to listen to me, too—no unnecessary risks." "Don't worry. I’ll check in with you every day to let you know I'm safe, okay?" "Okay." Eliza nodded. As long as Nolan was safe, she could handle returning overseas. "Pack your things. We’re leaving now," Halbert said, refusing to look at Nolan. Colton spoke up, clearly dissatisfied. "This fast? At least let Eliza rest for a day. What’s the big rush?" Colton was naturally sensitive to these shifts. He felt there was something strange about the way Halbert had shown up demanding Eliza’s immediate departure. "I’m a bit tired today," Eliza said, squeezing Nolan’s hand. She wasn't ready to leave him yet. "Can we leave tomorrow instead?" Seeing her hand in Nolan’s, Halbert remained silent. A nearby bodyguard whispered, "The Boss didn't specify an exact time we had to be gone. Perhaps..." Halbert shot the bodyguard a look that instantly silenced him. "Fine. I’ll give you one night. I’ll send people to help you pack first thing tomorrow morning." With that, Halbert turned and left the house without a backward glance. Colton and Lewis shared a look with the couple before making an excuse to head out as well. This final night belonged to the newly engaged pair.Once they were alone, Eliza spoke softly. "I think Halbert is just upset. He isn't targeting you on purpose." "I don't care what others think, but I do care about what your family thinks of me," Nolan said, gently brushing a stray lock of hair from her face. "I failed to protect you this time. He has every right to judge me."
