Golden Moon: The Beta Twins' Contracted Mate
Magnus' p.o.v. We have been on the road for an hour when I grab the file on Grand Valley territory. I think I can draw it by heart by now, but I need to do something to avoid going stir-crazy. My Betas are arguing with their Mate and I smile as she smacks them on the top of their heads at the same time. That girl has no fear of any repercussions; she would most likely toss them out of the moving SUV if they tried to retaliate against her. “Watch it or she might make you walk the rest of the way.” I say as I start to trace the path we will take into the territory. “Don't put any ideas in her head, Dumbass.” Makay shoots back. I doubt I would have to place that idea in her head; she can probably think of a few worse ideas on her own. Meadow is a team leader within a Renegade Squad and has proven that she can handle any man who dares to cross her. Meadow might be eighteen, but she has been through more than most Shifters her age. An Asshole of a Father, a Mother that died when she was two years old and a Brother that considered her an intruder. She never trusted men because of it and my Betas are lucky she didn't run for the hills when she found out who one of her Mates was. Makay will never hurt her, because I will help her kick his ass if it is necessary and so will his entire family.I listen to their banter as my focus goes back to the file and I slowly trace the path we will follow to the Pack-house again. I want to ensure that I have covered all our bases along the way, minimizing surprises as much as possible. Our team will enter at the southern border and make our way up to the north, where the Pack-house is located. We will be the first to arrive at the territory, while the other teams drive to the location near their entry point. “How far out are the others?” I ask out loud, but not at someone in particular. We have been on the road long enough to be close to the territory and it is in our best interest to know where the others are. “Captain Miles is almost in position and so are the other teams.” Meadow answers and I look up in time to see the SUV in front of us pulling over. No one says a word as we get out. I follow Meadow as she leads us to the border. We spread out a little to hunch down and watch the border for a while, hoping to find a pattern in their border patrols. I'm not sure what I was expecting, but it's not what I'm currently looking at. Three bulky Wolves, according to Meadow, are standing still near the border and looking around for a few minutes. Ten minutes later, another group of Warriors shows up and the ritual repeats itself. After watching the southern border for an hour, we have received confirmation that border patrol operates in the same manner all around. I have never heard Dad tell me about this type of patrolling during my years of following him around.“We wait two minutes after the next patrol leaves and enter the territory.” Meadow says through the mind-link. “The other teams will wait for two more patrols to pass them before they will follow our lead.” Once Meadow raises her hand, we slowly follow her into the territory. Gilliam is near the surface, straining his eyesight and hearing. “Duck, four Shifters to our right.” Meadow says and no one questions her order. A minute passes before two men walk past us and if one of them had been more interested in his surroundings, we would have been discovered. I think we all figured out the same thing at the same time, because we all turn our heads toward Meadow. “Yeah, I think I found my third gift.” She states, before she starts moving again. This is getting more interesting by the minute, because from time to time she calls out through the mind-link about the number of Shifters she can sense. Every time we stop to let Shifters pass, she tries to expand her reach of detecting other Shifters. She is right, this is as good a time to practice and it keeps her busy while we are sitting around idly. “I can sense Captain Miles and he has barely moved from his position. There is some kind of camp out there with many shifters walking around.” Meadow says through the mind-link and Gilliam is very impressed by her ability. We are finally able to see the Pack-house, but it looks relatively deserted from our point of view. “Can you sense any Shifters inside?” Makay asks. It takes a few minutes before Meadow starts smiling. “On the Alpha floor, two Shifters. The rest of the Pack-house is deserted.” Meadow answers and she slowly starts making her way to the back door of the Pack-house. Makay grabs the handle to push it down slowly and to our surprise, it is unlocked. Not really a smart thing to do in my opinion, but maybe they weren't expecting anyone to find their hideout. I am able to look down the hallway as Makay pushes the door open and we finally understand why the back door wasn't locked. There is a massive gap in the floor, just a few feet away from the door and there is no way to get past it without making a sound. “Let's check the windows and any other door we can find.” Makay says after he has closed the door again. We split into two groups to cover the sides of the Pack-house, in search of an entry point. With my 6”5 it is easier to look through the windows and see the floors of the rooms, so I get tasked with looking for the best entry point. The first window I look through has me stunned; the entire floor has collapsed and whatever piece of furniture was in that room is shattered into pieces. I couldn't even tell you what the space was used for from the debris, but it doesn't look like it was an office at one time. Probably the dirt room or laundry room, but with all the debris, it is hard to tell. We quietly make our way to the next window and I am tempted to snap a shot of it. This was once the Gamma office, no doubt in my mind on that and it looks similar to the first room I peeked into. “What's so funny, Magnus?” I hear Maryan ask through the mind-link, a perk of being a member of the Renegades. “Dad always complains that Gamma Layton's is a mess. I doubt he would ever say that again if he saw this Gamma office. I want to pull out my phone, if I had it on me and snap a shot to send to Dad.” I answer her and the next thing I know, she’s holding up her phone. I accept her offer and snap a shot of the Gamma office and one of a painting that somehow is still hanging on the wall, a bit crooked but still hanging on.
