Golden Moon: The Beta Twins' Contracted Mate

Chapter 51 Duck Down

Meadow’s p.o.v. I replay the footage again; I want to see if we missed something, and Rebel watches through my eyes to tell me her thoughts about the footage. “They are stalling, buying time for whoever went to the infirmary.” Lindy says through the mind-link. “They were waiting for more Warriors to come to the border, but why risk your life?” One of my new team members asks. He is right; why would you wait for more Warriors to arrive? It can get you killed because that is our instinct when we are faced with Rogues. We hardly ever take a Rogue prisoner, only in situations like this where you want to get some answers out of them. “Where did the other Warriors come from?” Rebel asks and for a moment, no one says a word. Raya grabs her phone and after a few minutes she returns to the mind-link, “They came from various other locations along the border.” She states and I tell her to call back the Alpha; I need to know if anyone was watching the border they crossed. “There was a look-out at the border they crossed. He will send the footage to you.” Raya informs all of us through the mind-link. I start the footage from the infirmary and as we suspected they looked into every filing cabinet until they found the one they were looking for. Both males open one file after the other, looking at them together as if they want to ensure they have looked at every piece of information in the files. It is the files from the Alpha family that they don’t read and just open them to toss them on the floor. “Looks like they narrowed down their suspect pool.” Calista says and I replay the footage a few more times to see if we might have missed something. “Elder Chelsea, we caught one of the Rogues.” I say the moment she answers the phone. “Get as much information out of him as you can. He is a Panther and he is the one that forced every female to look into his eyes.” There isn’t much more I can tell her and after a few minutes, we disconnect the call. After two hours, we finally reach the second Pack on our list and the Elder is waiting for us at the gate. He climbs in my SUV and gives directions on where to go; it doesn’t take me long to realize that we are not heading to the Pack-house. “Brent wanted to speak to you directly; he overheard my request and told the Alpha that he would talk to you. Our Alpha isn’t too keen on outsiders, so we are going straight to Brent’s place.” The Elder explains. I don’t care where we go as long as I get answers and if Brent is willing to provide me with some answers, I will go just about anywhere. We pull up to a small cottage, tucked away against the mountain. I doubt I would have found it on my own and I smile at the male on the front porch. He is sitting in a rocking chair, slowly moving back and forth with his eyes closed. I walk up to the front porch and wait for him to invite me into his home.“Have a seat, Meadow. I understand you would like to know more about the bloodline of my family.” He says as he gestures to the chair next to him. “Do you know if other members of your bloodline are out there somewhere?” I ask him, not willing to waste his or my time. “I am the last one. After losing my Mate without any Pups of our own, I stayed within our territory. I didn’t want another Mate and I needed to protect the knowledge about our bloodline.” He answers me. “Those are journals written by every gifted Wolf in my bloodline and this is my journal. I finished it this morning and am handing them all to you, Meadow. You can use them better than me; my time is almost up and I am grateful I got a chance to give them to someone who will appreciate them.” Brent says. “What gift do you have, Brent?” I ask him. “I know that it varies with each generation and some can have more than one gift.” “I have the gift of hearing. The gifts within my bloodline have never been spectacular, just the smaller ones that you can get. The gift of hearing, speed, sight or others among those lines and never more than one gift per Shifter or more than one gifted Shifter per generation.” He answers me. “If anyone is after a gifted Shifter, it will be a Shifter with a huge gift; a gift that can make a difference in any type of situation. Think of the gift of sensing other Shifters, the gift of hearing thoughts and there are a few more. Each of them gets discussed in the journals.” Brent informs me. The smaller, more insignificant gifts are known by most Shifters, it is the bigger and more important gifts that get barely recorded. I doubt I have to explain to any of you why they don’t go on record, it would be like putting a target on your back. “Meadow, make sure that these journals get to the Elders. I know that they will keep this information safe and that they will put the journals to good use.” Brent says before he walks back into his cottage. Rebel refuses to move as we listen to the sounds coming from inside the cottage. Brent walks up the stairs to open a door somewhere to my left and we can hear him sitting down on a bed. I close my eyes as I lean my head back against the back of the rocking chair; my ears are focused on any sounds that come from inside the cottage and I can slowly hear Brent’s heartbeat slow down. The time between each heartbeat becomes longer and once I have counted to a hundred without another beat of his heart, I get up to show him my respect. Calista walks up the steps to take the journals to my SUV and I walk into the cottage to find Brent lying on a bed with a picture in his hands. Rebel pushes forward, howling our goodbye to Brent and my team quickly joins us. Pack-members join in and I can hear Shifters approaching, but Rebel isn't finished with paying her respects to Brent yet. I walk out of the cottage to see the Elder talking to a male, my best guess the Alpha and he looks at me with curiosity. “Probably never seen a female before.” Rebel shoots through the mind-link and my team members all duck their heads down.
