Golden Moon: The Beta Twins' Contracted Mate
Meadow’s p.o.v. We are on our way to the second Pack on our list, a small Pack tucked away between a lake, a large forest and two mountain ridges. It took the Elder who lives within that territory a few days to convince the Alpha to meet with us; I don’t blame the Alpha for not allowing strangers into his territory. Especially not if there is a gifted Shifter living there. My phone starts ringing and I murmur a few swears as I see the caller ID. “Elder Chelsea, what can we do for you?” I ask, knowing full well that she wouldn’t call me if she didn’t have to. “Another attack is in progress; you are about two minutes from that location. If possible, capture one of the Rogues alive; another Squad is also on their way.” Elde Chelsea says and I see that Calista taps the address that was sent to us.“On our way. Call you back.” I say before I disconnect the call and inform the SUVs behind us about our detour through the mind-link. Calista slows down and the rest of us jump out of the SUV, heading to the Rogues at full speed. “That is the one we need.” Rebel says in my head. “He knows more than the others, he is looking the females in the eyes before tossing them to the side.” I observe him as I run towards him and I see him grabbing a female and pulling her close to him before he shoves her away. I let my claws come out, I need him alive but incapacitated and a good slash across his back will suffice. My claw slashes open his back, before he notices that I am much closer than he suspected and he crashes to the floor with a roar. Calista and Lindy cuff him with silver cuffs, while Raya empties a syringe with sedatives into his body. Understanding that we didn’t just have to deal with Wolf or Lycan Rogues, we asked Doc for a sedative that would knock out any Shifter. Another Rogue tries to get to him, but two of my new team members pull him back and rip his throat out before he hits the ground. We place the Rogue we caught in the trunk of one of the SUVs and make our way into the territory, heading straight for the infirmary. That is where we might find a few more answers and I want to see what they did to the files. “Alpha.” I say as I get out of the SUV and I follow him into the infirmary, Maryan right behind me while the others wait for our backup. “This is going to take some time to clean up.” The Alpha says as he steps to the side and I take a look around the room, noticing that not all the filing cabinets were opened. “Doc, can you tell me how your filing system works?” I ask him while I am still looking around the room.I listen to him as he points at the different cabinets, each of them containing the files of the Pack-members and each cabinet is for a certain rank within the Pack. He confirms my suspicions that whoever came in here knew that he was looking for the file on a high-ranking Pack-member. “What are you thinking, Meadow?” Maryan asks through the mind-link and I know that everyone was pulled into this link. “They are definitely looking for a high-ranked Pack-member, but I doubt they know the exact rank that they are looking for. This cabinet is for the Alpha, Beta and Gamma families; all the files were pulled out and opened.” I answer Maryan, but something is pulling at the back of my mind. “Rebel, see if you can make sense of this. Why are they only targeting the higher-ranked members? Why were only Betas and Gammas attacked?” I ask her. It will give me some peace of mind if she can deal with a part of the issue; I will deal with everything that happens out here in the so-called real world. Everyone that was involved with the attack has been questioned and I sigh in relief when I see the SUV with our prisoner head to Renegade territory. “Let’s get back on the road; we still have a two hour drive ahead of us.” I say once the SUV I have been looking at disappears from sight. “Meadow, my Alpha would like to talk to you for a second.” A Warrior says as he walks towards me. I look at Maryan before I follow the Warrior into the Pack-house, curious about the reason for this request. She will gather everyone at the SUVs and wait for me to return before we head out once again. “You wanted to see me, Alpha?” I ask as I walk into his office and I see him holding a thumb drive. “The footage from the attack and the infirmary are on this; maybe it can help your investigation.” He says as he hands it to me. No other Pack had cameras in their infirmary or near the borders, so I hadn’t expected to get some additional information today. I thank him for the footage before I walk out of the Pack-house, get in the SUV and we leave for our next Pack. Raya hands me my laptop, and I open the footage files on the thumb drive; everyone in my team can see what I am seeing, even if they are not in the SUV with me. I start with the footage from the border that was attacked; twelve Rogues move towards the border as they look around. At first, you would say that they are trying to avoid detection, but looking closer, it is obvious that they want to get seen. When the first two Warriors show up, you would expect to see the Rogues attacking the Warriors, but again, they are holding back. They keep charging at the Warriors, and when more Warriors arrive, more Rogues charge at them. What I am looking at doesn’t make sense, it isn’t what we are taught about Rogues, it isn’t what we know about Rogues. Rogues always attack the moment they see Warriors; they attack any Pack-member they see and almost always it ends with the death of the Pack-member or the Rogue.
