Golden Moon: The Beta Twins' Contracted Mate

Chapter 28 Feeling Safe

Makay’s p.o.v. Okay, this is a bit strange and then I am putting it mildly. You send a request to Renegade territory to get some assistance in your Daughter’s kidnapping, but when the cavalry shows up you tell them that they are not welcome. I think that I am starting to understand why Meadow isn’t trusting this case and from my perspective, she has every right to be distrusting of Alpha Rolf and his claim. “What are we going to do now?” I ask. “Continue with our assignment. Just because her Father is an Asshat, doesn’t mean that Janey no longer needs to be rescued if she actually needs to be rescued and a little voice in my head says that she might not want us to rescue her.” Meadow answers me. So, my thought on Andrew being her fated Mate might be right on the money and… Oh my Goddess, what if Alpha Rolf didn’t send the request? “Uhm, Meadow. I just had a thought, what if someone else send that request? Someone that might know what is really going on.” I think out loud. Blade disappears to the back of my mind at the sound of five mighty roars, it is more scary than hearing Alpha Lincoln roar and that is intimidating enough in itself. Calista keeps driving until Meadow tells her to take a left, none of us has said a word and Blade feels at ease enough to come out of hiding. “They are a scary bunch. Meadow kicked your ass and their roars made Alpha Lincoln sound like a Puppy.” Blade mumbles and thinking back about the moment they roared, I have to admit that he is right. “We are almost at the spot where their scent was last detected, that is where our search will start.” Meadow says after a few minutes. According to the files I read there is a general description of their scents, Andrew smells like cinnamon while Janey smells like basil. It is their scent that every Shifter can smell, but to their fated Mate they will smell very different. It will at least be able to send us in the right direction and hopefully we will be able to find more clues there or maybe even Janey or Andrew. Blade is a damn good tracker when it comes to scents, unlike Thyrius who is better at putting puzzle pieces together and that is why he is still in that damn archive. Trying to make complete files of all those papers, but if anyone can do it Thyrius and Myka can. “Meadow, would you mind if Blade tries to find their scent?” I ask as Calista pulls the SUV over to the side of the road. “Sure, knock yourselves out.” Meadow says as we get out of the SUV and Blade pushes forward to sniff the air. It takes him a few seconds to find the scent of cinnamon and basil, both scents seem to be combined as if they were walking close together. “Maybe Andrew was carrying Janey for some reason.” He replies to my thoughts. There is a small town to our left, but the scent moves away from the town and heads into the forest. Blade leads me in the direction their scent and soon we are surrounded by the forest. “Keep following Blade and Makay, they seem to be able to smell the scents a lot better than any of us.” I hear Meadow say. Blade keeps sniffing the air, leading us further into the forest and none of the females complain about the terrain we have to get through. They follow us closely, dodging branches and climbing the occasional rock formation that is blocking our way. Suddenly the scent is gone and we look around in confusion, because it is impossible for a scent to disappear this abruptly. We take a step forward and instead of more forest, we are faced with mountains. We move to the left for a minute or two and then we move back to the right, picking up the scent again at a small opening in the mountain. “Looks like a passageway, the scent leads that way.” I whisper, while I point into the opening. “Stay close behind me, I need Blade to follow the scent. I just don’t want them to freak out when they are facing a stranger.” Meadow whispers back. The passage is very narrow and I know I will have scrapes and bruises to show for it tomorrow. Meadow on the other hand seems to be able to navigate the passageway without bumping into the walls and the other four females behind us manage to avoid the walls as well. A few feet ahead the passageway starts to widen and I release a sigh of relief when I can walk normal again, not that I am able to move much faster but that is fine under the circumstances.Meadow’s hand flies up and we all stop dead in our tracks. Blade takes a good sniff and I point to Meadow’s left, showing her in which direction the scent is traveling. Slowly we move forward, step by step, keeping as quiet as possible. We don’t want to alert Andrew or Janey to our presence, Meadow wants to see what is going on first and then take action if that is necessary. Meadow peeks around the corner with her hand raised and we all come to a stop again. Blade keeps sniffing the air, our targets are close by and soon we will have some answers. After a few seconds she takes a step forward and I manage to see why she had stopped, two people are sitting on a log with their backs turned towards us. “Probably Andrew and Janey.” Blade mumbles in my head. They are so engrossed in their conversation that they don’t notice the six strangers stepping into the small clearing, nor do they notice that one of them is getting closer to them. “I don’t remember feeling this safe or loved in my life. Dad always made sure that I knew that I was a means to an end.” We hear the female say. “Do you trust Jacob to send that request to the Elders?”
