Golden Moon: The Beta Twins' Contracted Mate
Marley’s p.o.v. I thought we would have a few quiet days without a Full Moon party and no answers from the Elders yet, but I was mistaken. We are walking toward the house where Meadow grew up and hates with a passion, not that anyone can blame her. I would feel the same way as most of you would. With eight of us searching the house, it shouldn’t take too long to find what we are looking for. I walk into the kitchen and start opening every door and drawer I see. Mauro is on the opposite side of the kitchen, doing the same. “What ability are you hoping for?” He asks out of the blue and I take a minute to think about my response. “None. I hope that my Mate will be a Gamma or lower in rank, because then I don’t have to worry about a target on my back.” I answer him as I close another drawer. We work in silence for a few minutes before I see him turning toward me again and it is clear that he has something on his mind. “Gossom and I have a theory on why the three of you look so much like one another. It is to confuse anyone who even thinks about kidnapping a gifted Shifter from our territory.” Mauro says. I let his theory run through my mind and it could be a solid theory. It also means that I get my wish of never having an ability.“Okay, let’s dive into this a little deeper.” I say as I open another drawer. “Our Goddess has decided that Meadow, Milcah and I needed to be each other’s decoys and therefore, we all look very similar. It would also mean that I need to stay within Gold Moon territory, right?” “I guess you have a point. Which means that during the next Full Moon, you are probably going to find your fated Mate and you will settle within the territory.” Mauro answers. I doubt he understands that I will never have an ability, because my Mate isn’t going to be an Alpha or a Beta. “You do realize that it means that I won’t have any abilities, like Milcah.” I say as I open a cabinet above the sink. “Why not?” He asks and for a moment I look over my shoulder at him. “Oh, damn. You need an Alpha or a Beta Mate to get your abilities.” I start laughing when Acadia gives me a suggestion on how I could get an ability, but it is too ridiculous for words. “Only if Magnus or the twins need an extra Mate.” I mumble as we move from the kitchen to the basement and I get a soft growl from Milcah, so I quickly explain the conversation I had with Mauro. “Or Rhys.” Milcah throws back and now I have a pissed off Bear in my head. Acadia doesn’t like the idea and I agree with her wholeheartedly. Magnus suggests his Brother, Madden, as a possible Mate, but Mauro points out that it would defeat the purpose of us looking alike. “Well, that would leave you and Malek or any other unmated man in the territory. Which will make her part of the Belleron bloodline go extinct.” Meadow says that before she tells us, we are heading up to the first floor. Milcah and I giggle at the stunned look on Mauro and Malek’s faces; neither one of them had thought of that possibility. “If that happens, I have enough ammo to put them in their place, thanks to King Joseph.” I respond as we walk up the stairs. We each take a room on the first floor to search. Malek gets the bathroom that is connected to the bedroom, which once belonged to Meadow and I search the bedroom. If I wanted to hide something, I would use a floorboard or a hidden compartment inside a closet and after opening every drawer and door, I get on my knees to look under the bed. I ask Malek to help me move the bed, but I can’t find a floorboard that seems out of place. “I am done in the bathroom. Want me to help you out?” He asks and I ask him to check the rest of the floorboards in the room. “I am going to check the walk-in closet. It would be the place I would hide something, because I doubt River would have come in here.” I state as I walk away from Malek. I pull out every drawer there is and turn them upside down to check for a false bottom, but no luck. I start knocking on every back wall and there is no hidden compartment to be found. I am glad that I don’t have to remove any clothes as I move along the wall. “Malek, I found something.” I say when I have reached the last corner of the closet behind the door. I point at the scratches on the wooden floor that run across the floor. “The door didn’t make those; they run in a different direction.” Malek says after he has closed the door. “We need to find the lever or button that opens this door.” I look at the panel that covers the bottom half of the cabinet and wonder why I hadn’t realized sooner that there might be a hidden space. I point to the upper right corner of the panel and ask Malek to push against it, but it doesn’t open. “Nice try. I think there is a button somewhere, a lever would be too big and obvious, while your idea could have opened it by mistake.” Malek says as he lets his hand slide over the wall and back of the cabinet we are standing in front of. Acadia is counting the screw covers in my head and I follow them with my finger. When I do the same with the other side of the cabinet, we discover one more cover than on the other side. As Malek and I count from the back of the space to the front, I find the bogus cover. I push down on it and the panel moves forward a few inches. We need to pull it toward us for it to open up entirely, revealing four shelves filled with journals. All of them look to be centuries old, but well-read. Mauro has joined us in the closet and he brought a box with him to place the journals in. We pull dozens of journals from the shelves and I hear Malek groan when Mauro tells us it will take days to read them all. “Okay, let’s get out of here. Let your Father know that we found what we were looking for, once we are back in the Pack-house, Magnus. I’d rather not run into Rhys with a box full of his belongings.” Meadow says. We have our work cut out for us and I hope that we can find some answers for King Joseph.
