Golden Moon: The Beta Twins' Contracted Mate
Malek’s p.o.v. I hope that the Elders can find us some information that helps solve the mystery of Mahina and her rescuers. No matter what we uncover, I want to know what happened to them. No one deserves to be erased from history and their families need to have closure, whether it is after a day or a few centuries. “It will probably take days to go through all the files, because most of them aren’t digitized yet. I don’t have to tell you that it will take many hours to read through all of them.” Myka says and I get reminded of the archive here at Gold Moon. “Thank the Goddess we are here and not there.” Makay mumbles and earns himself some chuckles from us. Uncle Joseph stays until after dinner and tells the girls a few humiliating stories about us as kids at the Palace during that time. I am glad that Mauro and I haven’t found our Mate yet or we would be in the same boat as Magnus, Myka and Makay. The girls kept asking for more stories and our parents were more than willing to give him some pointers on the stories to tell. The following day, Milcah and Meadow continued to make subtle hints about the stories they had heard, eliciting a few laughs. “Luna, what are the plans for the Full Moon tomorrow?” Marley asks during breakfast.“Nothing. I didn’t have time to plan a party with everything that went on and for once, I would like to have a family night.” Luna Leona answers. I don’t mind that there won’t be a party because I’ve had my fair share of women following me around during those events, and most of them couldn’t pick up on my subtle hints of disinterest. We still haven’t received any news from the Elders and we have all read Mahina's journal. None of us was able to understand how they had gotten away with everything and no files were found on Meadow’s family moving into the territory. “Come with me, I need your help.” I say as I guide Milcah out of the Alpha floor and as we walk down the stairs, I explain my plan to her. I walk into the main living room and Milcah stays out of sight as I walk out onto the patio to find Rhys sitting there with a cup of coffee. “Rhys, I have a question that you, as the former Beta, might be able to answer.” I say as I sit down on the other side of the table. He looks up from his coffee before he tells me to ask him my question. “Are there journals of the Beta family?” I ask. “I mean, journals written by your ancestors about their previous Packs or mundane issues. Anything that would give you or your children an insight into their bloodline.” “No, only our family files in the archive. I never had any use for writing in a journal and I doubt my ancestors did, nor do you have the time as an Alpha, Beta or Gamma.” He answers before he gets up and walks into the Pack-house. I wait for Milcah to join me and hopefully, she will have an answer for me. “He was lying. He got anxious the moment you asked about any journal and it was clear that he lied about it.” Milcah says. I link Captain Miles to get a surveillance on Rhys as Milcah and I go looking for the others, whom we find on the Beta floor. We quickly recount to them what we did and what we figured out. “Why would you need those journals, Malek?” Magnus asks and everyone stares at him for even asking the question. “To find out from which Pack the Fareye family is and when they moved to Gold Moon territory. To find out if they got the position the rightful way or if there might have been another family who had claims to the position.” I answer him. Everyone starts talking at the same time and it isn't easy to make sense out of any of it. I lean back in my seat with my arms folded in front of my chest and wait until they realize that I am not contributing to the conversation. “Thank you. It was not easy to understand any of you, so keep your mouth shut until I ask for your input.” I say with a smirk on my face. “Meadow, why don’t you start? After all, it is your family we are going to discuss.” “If there are any journals, they will be hidden in the house. Rhys never lived on the Beta floor and as far as I remember, it was built by one of our ancestors for his family.” Meadow responds.Marley is sitting on the floor by the coffee table, making notes as we all share our thoughts on the subject. “How do we keep Rhys away from the house long enough to search it?” Marley asks when it's her turn to give her opinion. “I don’t believe he will give us access, nor will he tell us where those journals are.” “We could ask one of our Dads for help. They might have a way to keep him occupied while we look for those journals and Meadow could ask River if he has an idea where Rhys might have hidden them.” I suggest. Meadow doesn’t waste time and calls her Brother to find out if he knows anything, but it is a bust. He is as surprised to find out about the journals as we all were and hopes that we can find them to provide us with some answers. “Dad is going to ask Rhys to sit in on a meeting that he has been postponing for too long already. This will be about some construction work that needs to be done and will take hours to finish.” Magnus tells us. We will have enough time to search that house from top to bottom and still have time left to rearrange the furniture if we want to, not that we are going to. After all, we don’t want Rhys to know that we were in his house. We want to have all the facts before we make it public, which will be something Uncle Joseph would prefer to do himself. “Let’s go downstairs and wait for Rhys to enter the Alpha office before we make our move.” Meadow says and we follow her out the door.It only takes a few minutes for Rhys to show up and for some reason, he has a smirk on his face as if he were just crowned King.
