Golden Moon: The Beta Twins' Contracted Mate

Chapter 157 Many Journals

Mauro’s p.o.v. We have been on the Gamma floor since returning from Rhys’ house and other than our breathing and the turning of pages, it is quiet. On the covers of the journals, there were sticky notes with dates on them, and we began by reading the oldest ones, which indicated that the Bluetail family had once been the Beta family of Gold Moon Pack, not the Alpha family. It left us with the following questions: What is the Fareye family doing with these journals? Are the Bluetail family and the Fareye family related in some way? By the time we take a break for lunch, we have established that the Duveron family founded their Pack almost fifteen hundred years ago, after our world was divided into six Kingdoms. They had some trouble finding a suitable name for their Pack, but were able to get a unanimous vote for Iron Nightwalkers Pack. The Bluetail family held the Beta position from their founding days and it seemed to be a perfect match for both families, who weren’t related at all. To most outsiders, the Pack-members were known as Nightwalkers and they earned their name during the war between the Royals. There hasn’t been much information written down on the war so far, but who knows what we might come across. During lunch, Magnus tells the others what we have uncovered so far and Mom decides to check the Gamma floor for hidden compartments. Part of me hopes that Mom finds nothing, but another part of me hopes that there is a hidden compartment on our floor. If there is one, I hope that it is empty, though. I doubt any of us are interested in reading more journals than we already have to. “It wouldn't surprise me if we found hidden compartments in most structures in the territory. After all, there have been Shifters living here for centuries and a lot more than we had thought there would be.” Mom says before she walks out of the dining room, dragging Dad with her. “The Royals started a war after their Father passed away and hadn't announced his heir.” Marley says after Makay has asked who started the war. There was no Succession Law for the Royals at the time and with six children, it meant chaos and a lot of arguing. Elders were divided on who should be the next King or Queen and after decades of war, they finally settled on splitting the Kingdom into six parts. It remained unstable for the first two to three decades before they were able to establish some sort of peace and we still benefit from that treaty. “Why aren't we taught about that war anymore?” Meadow asks as we walk down to the Gamma floor to continue reading the journals. “Because the Royal family feared that someone might start a war again and none of the Kingdoms are too keen on that happening again.” Marley answers. It makes sense that no one is waiting for another war. I wouldn't like to be living in a world that is at war, never knowing when or if my life will end or that of my loved ones. “Okay, let's get back to reading these journals. I would like to know what happened, why it happened and maybe get some answers about Mahina.” Marley says as she sits down next to Malek and I place myself on her other side. She might not like huge crowds, but she can handle us just fine. She isn't afraid to say what is on her mind or ask questions about whatever pops up in her head. It is close to dinner when I open another journal and find that the Beta didn't write this journal. Jacan's twin Sister writes this journal and she sheds some light on the how and why of their Alpha and Luna's murders. “Jacan was in love with Luna Keola before she even met Alpha Koa. They met during a meeting between the King and Jacan. Koa was supposed to have been there, but his father had fallen ill during the night and they feared he wouldn't make it through the day. Jacan met with the King on several occasions and each time, Keola would be there. After almost a year and five meetings, Jacan was ready to ask her to become his chosen Mate. We all know what happened instead and Jacan started planning to take over from Koa.” I tell them. All the information we have gets written down. Jacan’s crush on Luna Keola, Jacan’s plan to seduce Keola and the immense fight that Koa and Jacan had because of it. Ilma, Jacan’s twin Sister, wrote extensively about those days and it paints a clear picture of what happened during that time. Koa came close to removing Jacan as his Beta, but he changed his attitude in time and he stayed clear of Luna Keola. “Damn, how was Jacan able to fool Koa? I doubt I would ever trust someone like him near my Mate ever again.” Magnus says. “Let’s hope that we find that answer in these journals somewhere. Even though a small part of me fears that Ilma wasn’t aware of everything that Jacan did.” Meadow replies. “Okay, that is enough for today. Dinner in an hour, freshen up and no arguments.” Mom says as she walks into the living room and we each mark the last page we read of our journal with a sticky note. We place the journals in Dad’s office to make sure that we can have a quick start in the morning and avoid wasting time finding the right page again. It usually happens to me about three times a week with the books I read and it is a pain to find the right page again. I follow Malek and Marley toward our rooms and take a shower to wash off the stiffness from sitting still all day. We only had training in the morning and skipped our other training session to find out more about the original Beta family. “How many more novels are there left to read?” Gossom asks and in my mind, I picture the stack of journals we still have to go through. At least enough to keep us busy for another day. “It depends on how many journals Ilma wrote and how many journals were written by the generations that followed them.” I respond as I close the last button of my shirt.
