Golden Moon: The Beta Twins' Contracted Mate
Malek’s p.o.v. I never thought that anyone could disobey an order by finding a loophole. I figured that there would be consequences no matter how you tried to get around an Alpha command and a King’s command would be even more challenging. In my mind, I go over every order Alpha Lincoln ever gave me to see if I could have used this loophole. “Yes, Malek. I also need to change my way of giving a command, because writing it down is not the same as verbally stating it.” Alpha Lincoln says, interrupting my thoughts. “Okay, can we get back to Mahina and her family?” King Joseph asks. “I would like to see the structure that she was held in. We need to decide if it has to be torn down or not.” Marley walks onto the balcony and before we can say anything, she starts climbing the wall of the Pack-house. Mauro tells Uncle Joseph where the pins are and smiles when Uncle Joseph starts climbing up. Yes, that is what we call him. I believe it was our second visit to the Palace when he decided that he couldn’t handle all of us calling him Your Majesty all day long and with Magnus and his siblings calling him Uncle Joseph, it was an easy choice. I follow Uncle Joseph to the roof and walk around the structure to see how it was built, because I don’t understand how this structure was built on the roof without the Alpha knowing about it.“What are you looking at, Mauro?” Uncle Joseph asks and I look at him with a grin on my face. “Sorry. You’re Malek.” “It’s alright, Uncle Joseph. You aren’t the first and won’t be the last.” I respond. “I want to understand how this structure ended up here. It couldn’t have been built with the knowledge of the Alpha, because I doubt that Beta Jacan could have come up with a good excuse.” The three of us look at the structure from every angle, but can’t find an answer to my question. “Alpha, can you ask one of the construction workers to come up here? We are in need of a few answers.” I ask Alpha Lincoln through the mind-link. If anyone can answer my question, it will be a construction worker. It takes him a few minutes to get to the Alpha floor, but Alpha Lincoln has to threaten him with a command to come up to the roof. “Your.. Your Majesty.” The man stumbles over his words once he sees who is with us. “Why didn’t you want to come up here?” Uncle Joseph asks. “I could feel your fear all the way up here.” The roof under his feet seems awfully interesting to the man, but I know that Uncle Joseph wants an answer. “This story was written down by one of my ancestors over three hundred years ago. At the time, Jacan, the Beta, asked if it was possible to build a structure on top of a building without anyone being aware of it. My ancestor told him that it was impossible, unless he was going to use a metal frame. You still need to use bricks to build the outer walls, but it would be a quiet process. It would stay in place as long as there wasn’t a hurricane or tornado.” The man answers. “If that is all, then why did you fear coming up here?” I ask him because it doesn’t make much sense. “It was written down after the Alpha and Luna died and the suspicion was that Beta Jacan built the structure for their Daughter, Mahina. Everyone was given a command to never talk about the original Alpha family again.” He answers. It still doesn’t make sense and the three of us keep looking at him for some answers. “I thought you might have found a body up here.” He finally admits. Damn, that never crossed my mind. We know what happened and how long Mahina was held here, but he doesn’t know that. “There isn’t a body up here. We just wanted to understand how this structure was built and you have answered that question. Thank you.” Uncle Joseph says. “What do you need to tear it down?” Marley asks him and we all stare at her. “I wouldn’t want anyone else to get trapped in there, even if the chances of that are slim.” “Oh, he was a smart man.” The construction worker says as he looks at the door. “Even if there had been a handle on the inside, you couldn’t have opened the door.”Well, at least he answered another question I had. “We don’t need to take the structure down. All I have to do is change the locking mechanism and treat the building with some liquid Esemine to render the Evlehover harmless.” He continues. “We’ll let you know what Alpha Lincoln has decided. In the meantime, I suggest that you think of a way to get it taken down and how to remove the debris from the roof.” Uncle Joseph says as we all walk back to the edge of the roof. Marley jumps down again and I chuckle at the horrified looks on the faces of the two men standing next to me. “Not the first time she has done that.” I say as I move over the edge to the first pin and slowly make my way down the wall. If we are keeping the structure, we need to get new steps against the wall because these are not going to last much longer. “Any news from the Elders?” Uncle Joseph asks after the construction worker has left. “Not yet. They are checking the Archive to see if the Omega and Warrior settled in another Pack or if they ended up in Renegade territory. Elder Josiah is even going through the files with unidentified deaths to find any clues.” Meadow responds. I try to place myself in Beta Jacan’s shoes. What would I do with the guards if a prisoner were to escape? Alpha Lincoln puts them on probation for an unknown amount of time, except to him and it is to prevent them from showing improvement during that time and then slacking off afterward. But Beta Jacan already killed the Alpha and his Mate, so what would stop him from killing an Omega and a Warrior? It would explain the little information we found in their files if he killed them for letting Mahina escape.
