Golden Moon: The Beta Twins' Contracted Mate

Chapter 145 Spent Time

Marley’s p.o.v. I watch as the large group of Shifters leaves Gold Moon territory. I wanted to join them, but Milcah pointed out that it would be too dangerous. Someone would have to watch me constantly to prevent Devlin from grabbing me, which would have slowed them down as they moved through the territory and the last thing I want is to endanger anyone. Grandma is getting along with Zaphara; both of them are happy to get to know the other part of their family. I am listening to them as I relax in the lounger on the balcony. Elder Major thought it would be wise if we stayed indoors, just in case the Idiot decides to come here. A loud banging on the door interrupts the conversation, and Zaphara gets up to open it to whoever is on the other side. “Zaphara, I need to bring Marley to safety. Devlin was spotted near the borders.” I hear Rhys say. I glance at Grandma for a second before sneaking off toward the Omega stairwell. Acadia and I don’t trust him, and we believe it is best to find Alpha Lincoln or someone else from the leadership. Instead of heading down the stairs, we walk up to the Alpha floor, hoping to find someone there who can help us out. I can’t link anyone other than Grandma and Dad, because we haven’t decided what we want to do after Devlin has been dealt with.“Grandma, once Rhys has left, I need you to ask Zaphara to link Alpha Lincoln. I am on the Alpha floor at the moment.” I tell her through the mind-link. Acadia is pacing in the back of my head, when we suddenly catch a scent we'd rather forget, we want to shake it off as fast as we can. We try to open the door, but it is locked, and the scent is getting closer as we retreat into the living room. “You can’t hide from us, Marley. You will be ours, no matter where you try to hide or how fast you try to run.” Devlin says as I step onto the balcony. I look around me to find a way to escape and the only way is up. Smiling to myself, I start to climb up the wall and send a thank you up to Grandpa. “Bears might not be the best wall climbers, but you definitely are, Marley.” I can hear Grandpa say. Bears are known to climb trees, but walls are an entirely different subject. It never stopped me from climbing and it never bothered me if I couldn’t climb a tree. Slowly but steadily, I make my way up the wall until I reach the gutter. I pull myself up onto the roof and slowly make my way up to the top. It doesn’t look like anyone has been up here in decades, possibly even longer. I take my time with each step, as there are leaves and small branches on the roof that make it impossible to see if there is any damage, and I’d rather not step into some kind of hole. I shake my head as I step around the chimney and see a small building hidden from sight. It wasn’t visible when we drove up to the Pack-house and I wonder why anyone would want to build this onto their roof. The building has a few windows and a relatively small door. I peek through the windows to see if I can figure out what it was used for, but there is barely anything inside. A small table with a small stool and I am inclined to believe it was used by a child at one point. We don’t know if Devlin is still on the Alpha floor or if he is trying to follow us up to the roof; he might have found the access point to the roof on the Alpha floor and be approaching from another side. “Go into the building. It is dark enough for us to blend in.” Acadia says. I slowly push down the handle and to my surprise, it opens without much of a fight. I close the door behind me and hear the soft click of the door locking. Neither of us pays much attention to it and I hunch down in a corner to avoid detection if he is smart enough to look for me on the roof. Leaning back against the wall, I close my eyes to concentrate on my surroundings. Anyone walking around on the roof would make some noise and we would hear them coming closer. It is almost impossible to be stealthy on this rooftop. “Link Dad to see if they caught Devlin. We have been here for a few hours already.” Acadia says and I try to link Dad before I try linking Grandma, but I can’t reach either one of them. I peek out of the closest window; it is clear to see that we have been in here for a few hours. After taking a good look around, I make my way to the door. Pushing the handle down, I realize that it is locked and no matter how hard I try, I can’t open the door. After taking a deep breath, I take a closer look at the small room I am in. Damn, I wish I had done that before walking into this, whatever it is. There is Evlehover embedded into every surface of this room and I see that, at the very least, the window sills are made of wood and Kreasium. Even though Evlehover can’t hurt us, it will disconnect our ability to use the mind-link. There is no way for me to alert anyone to my situation or my whereabouts and with the Kreasium in place, Meadow won’t be able to sense me. “Let's see if we can find out who or why this building was placed on the roof?” Acadia says. I doubt we'll find an answer to that question, but at least it's better than driving myself crazy. At first glance, I would say that this was for a child. The table and stool aren’t big enough for an adult, unless they aren’t tall. The lack of a bed indicates it wasn’t used as a permanent residence and I can’t think of a reason why anyone would want to spend their nights here. The furniture is the only thing that shows that someone did spend time here. Both items have usage marks on them, but they also look handmade. I keep looking around the room and the longer I look, the more convinced I am that whoever spent time here didn’t do it voluntarily.
