Golden Moon: The Beta Twins' Contracted Mate
Mauro’s p.o.v. Gossom seems to understand what Barison wants to do and we follow him up to the Beta floor. Elder Major steps aside when he sees us coming and Gossom is the first one to pick up Marley’s scent. He walks toward the Omega stairwell and Elder Major opens the door for us. We walk up to the Alpha floor and Luna Leona opens the door for us. The balcony is our end station, but there is no way she could have gone anywhere from here. “Is there any footage from the outside of the Pack-house?” I ask through the mind-link. “Marley went onto the balcony, but that is where the trail ends.” “I told you, we checked all the footage. No sign of Marley or Devlin on any of it.” Mom says. Gossom gives me back control and after putting my shorts on, I walk into the living room. Meadow and Milcah seem to be concentrating and I hope they can find Marley before Devlin does. No one says a word while they try to find even a slight trace of Marley or Devlin. “Captain Miles, keep the territory surrounded. I can sense one presence that is unfamiliar to me, but I can’t tell you who it is.” Meadow says through the mind-link. “Where is the unfamiliar presence?” Magnus asks as he walks toward the door. We will deal with it from this end, while the Squad and Elite Warriors ensure they can’t escape.Meadow follows Magnus out the door and passes him on the stairs to steer us in the right direction. Gossom keeps pacing in my mind; he hates not knowing what happened or how it happened, and right now, we don’t know either way. “Spread out. I want to surround whoever it is and make escaping impossible.” Magnus says and we fan out to trap the Shifter that Meadow can sense. “Whoever it is is heading toward the school.” Meadow says through the mind-link and it is clear to us that they are trying to sneak across the border. Too bad that they don’t know about the welcoming committee out there. We are walking into the schoolyard when a Wolf comes running toward us, growling louder the closer he gets. I watch in awe as Meadow makes her claws come out, and I see Magnus looking at her with envy. Magnus is still unable to do it and Madden still makes a complete shift in more than half of his tries. Meadow gets flanked by her Mates, but they won’t interfere with this. She can handle herself and probably better than some of us. She’s a Renegade and becoming one isn’t a walk in the park. Besides, she has already shown us that she can kick ass. She sidesteps the Wolf and grabs his hind leg with her claw, incapacitating him. His injury forces him to shift back to his Human and before he can respond, Makay and Myka have grabbed his arms. They drag a screaming and whimpering Alpha toward the infirmary and Alpha Lincoln meets us halfway.“Where are you taking him?” He asks and Myka looks at him while most of us chuckle. “It is that we need answers, otherwise I would have thrown him in the dungeons and tossed the key into the pond.” Myka answers. “So, I am doing the sensible thing, for once. The infirmary.” Doc guides them to a room and after putting him on the bed, they move to the corner of the room. They are not allowing him to escape, whether Doc likes it or not. “Alpha Lincoln, I would appreciate it if you told them to leave the room. We need to be able to work in there.” A nurse says. “Nope, not happening. We are not going anywhere. You have more than enough room to work on the Idiot.” Makay responds. “If that is a problem, we can bring him to the dungeons instead.” Doc grabs the nurse by the arm and pulls her toward the bed as he tells her what to do. For a few minutes, their conversation is all we hear and of course, the whimpering of that stupid Alpha. “Both of them are nervous. It feels as if they are hiding something, but I can’t tell you if it has to do with Devlin.” Magnus says through the mind-link. I smile as I try to think of a reason why either of them is feeling nervous. If it isn’t Devlin, then the only reason I can come up with is an affair between the two of them, which will cause a tiny war between Doc and his chosen Mate. “Nurse, do you have a Mate?” I ask her, a smile on my face as I look at her. I want to see Doc’s reaction to my flirting, but he doesn’t respond at all. The nurse has turned a nice red color and I have an answer to my question. “It has to be about Devlin. If something were going on between the two of them, Doc wouldn’t have appreciated my flirting.” I tell the others through the mind-link. Malek has walked away from the room and I see him talking to Maryan, who pulls a tablet from her bag and hands it to him. It takes a few minutes before he turns his head to look at me and I don’t need him to tell me anything. I step into the doorway to block anyone from leaving the room and moments later, I feel Malek stepping behind me. “Doc, step away from your patient. Makay, keep an eye on Devlin.” Malek says. We step aside to allow Alpha Lincoln to walk into the room and I wait for Malek to explain himself. “I took another look at the footage and figured out how Devlin got into the territory without any camera picking him up. Doc guided him past all the cameras and the last footage of Doc was at the Pack-house, near the kitchen.” Malek says. “Every Squad member and Elite Warrior is looking for Marley. We caught him within the territory, which means Marley can’t be far. Maryan, can you keep an eye on Devlin? I need Myka to look up a few things for me.” Alpha Lincoln says. We head back to the Pack-house and Malek walks out to the balcony on the Alpha floor again. He walks around for a while before stopping to take in his surroundings, then heads to the railing to gaze down.He looks to the left and right, but I have no idea what he is looking for. There is no way she could have lowered herself onto the balcony of the Beta floor; the distance is too vast and they are not positioned underneath one another.
