Reborn as the Baby Sister Everyone Spoiled—and the One He Loved

Chapter 49 Liar

Elaine didn't say another word and focused on eating her meal. Eventually, she finished everything on her plate. However, a lot was still left on the coffee table—several dishes had barely been touched. "I'll pack the leftovers and take them with me," Elaine said, noticing Jay staring at her. "Huh?" Jay was stunned. Pack the leftovers? Does she mean eating leftovers? Is she serious? But after a brief pause, he thought it over and kept quiet. After a few seconds, he finally spoke. "No need. I'll save it for dinner tonight." This girl had endured so much in the past. Now that she was back with the Currans, how could he possibly let her eat leftovers? In fact, he wouldn't eat them either. Leftovers could pose a health risk. "Alright then." Elaine nodded. Just as she stood up, her phone began to ring. She glanced at the caller ID and frowned slightly. "What's wrong?" Jay asked. Picking up the phone, Elaine shook her head. "Nothing. Dr. Curran, thanks for lunch. I'm heading back to Anna's ward now." Before Jay could respond, she turned and left. The moment she walked out of the office, she answered the call. "Hello?" "Elaine, why did you lie to me?"Alora's accusing voice rang out from the other end of the line. She had been brooding over it and felt increasingly frustrated. Elaine had gone to call off the engagement but was turned down. Yet she never told her! Elaine's expression remained blank. "What exactly did I lie to you about?" Alora was furious. "Didn't you say you ended the engagement with Ter? But I just found out he rejected your proposal!" Elaine replied calmly, "That's right. He did reject me." "You ... you liar!" Alora shouted. Elaine's tone was indifferent. "Why are you so worked up? I only promised to bring up the idea of breaking off the engagement. Whether he agreed or not was his decision.""Liar!" Alora gritted her teeth. Elaine's voice remained steady. "Besides, what difference does it make if he refuses? I've already convinced Mom and Dad to go to the Wilsons personally and call it off." Alora's anger instantly turned to excitement. "Really?" "Believe it or not, that's up to you," Elaine said before hanging up without hesitation. She didn't have the patience to deal with Alora any longer. Elaine returned to Anna's hospital room. Anna's condition was stable, with no major issues. As night fell, Elaine said goodbye to Anna. She had to return to Curran's Residence for dinner with her parents. At that moment, the lights shone brightly in the Currans's luxury villa complex on the hillside. The grand, opulent villas looked even more majestic under the cover of night, adding an air of mystery to the scenery. A black Maybach slowly pulled up at the entrance to the estate. The passenger door opened, and Ryan stepped out to knock on the door. In the main hall of the Currans's house, Leon had just arrived home. Rebecca, ever the thoughtful wife, handed him his favorite earl grey tea. Hearing that both her parents were in the hall, Alora rushed downstairs eagerly. "Mom, Dad," she greeted sweetly. Rebecca looked up. "Alora, you're home so early today?" With a gentle smile, Alora nodded. "Yeah." After making that call to Elaine, she'd been restless and uneasy. She left the hotel and hurried back to the Curran's Residence immediately. Leon was busy with work, likely with evening engagements too, and who knew when he'd return? Rebecca had gone out for afternoon tea with friends. Alora was desperate to confirm whether Elaine's claims were true, but she couldn't find them. It was driving her crazy. However, she didn't dare call them directly—it would seem too deliberate. Her parents had already started favoring Elaine, and she couldn't risk making them dislike her. Otherwise, they'd lean toward Elaine even more. So, she'd forced herself to wait, doing everything she could to hold her anxiety in check. Finally, they were both home. "Dad, you're home early too," Alora said with a smile, sitting beside Rebecca.
