Chapter 48 Do You Think I'm a Pig?

Elaine casually shrugged. "I just think you're wasting a lot of food, Dr. Curran." Jay's face turned blank. That brat. I prepared all these for her, and yet she's calling it a waste. He didn't respond, instead picking up his utensils and digging into his meal. Elaine couldn't help herself. "Dr. Curran, you don't seem very happy." Jay shot her a quick glare. "Call me Jay." Dr. Curran. It sounds strange, almost uncomfortable. Normally, it never bothered me when others called me that. Elaine lowered her gaze and picked up a piece of vegetable. "Forget I said anything." Jay was left speechless. He was getting really tired of her. "Is it really that hard to say ‘Jay'?" He glared at her again, feeling more frustrated. This brat. She won't call me that, even when I asked. I won't even let Alora call me "Jay"! Elaine ate quietly, ignoring the tension in the air. Jay, still frustrated, bit down hard on his fork, struggling to calm himself. All he could do was focus on his meal. The room fell into a quiet lull, broken only by the sounds of clinking silverware. Jay's eyes drifted back to Elaine, watching her as she ate. She moved with such grace, chewing slowly and savoring every bite. There was a certain elegance in her movements, and with her beauty, it almost felt like watching a performance. For reasons he couldn't explain, his mood seemed to lighten. His thoughts wandered to her past—the years before she arrived at the Currans. His parents had shared a little about it. Elaine's childhood had been tough. Her parents had been lazy and indifferent, and they disliked daughters, so they barely cared for her. It was the neighbors who stepped in, helping her whenever they could and providing food when they saw her struggling. By the time she was four or five, she was already cooking her own meals when hunger struck. Jay couldn't imagine how a young child managed to fend for herself. Meanwhile, at that age, Alora was surrounded by luxury at the Currans—designer bags, diamonds, anything she wanted. She had servants at her beck and call for even the smallest tasks. She was showered with the love of her parents, grandparents, and brothers. It was like they were living in completely different worlds. A tightness formed in Jay's chest. He looked at Elaine again. She was beautiful, but that small face—probably smaller than his palm—reminded him of how thin she was. Without thinking, he grabbed a piece of rib and placed it in her bowl. Elaine looked up, surprised. Jay awkwardly licked his lips. "Eat it. There's so much food, and if you don't eat it, it'll just go to waste." Elaine didn't refuse. "I'll try." She had never liked wasting food, having known what it was like to go hungry. Jay let out a soft sigh of relief when she didn't object. Then, he started piling more food onto her plate. Before long, her bowl was stacked high with food. Elaine looked at the mountain of food and then back at him. "Dr. Curran, do you think I'm a pig?" Jay choked on his own breath and quickly cleared his throat. "Cough, cough ... It's a waste if you don't eat." He hadn't even realized how much he had added. Elaine paused for a moment, then nodded. "Alright." Jay watched as she ate, her cheeks puffing out with each bite. A smile tugged at the corners of his lips. This brat is surprisingly cute. But ... she's really too thin.If she gained a little weight, she'd be even cuter. Elaine noticed that he hadn't touched his food, and instead had this strange smile on his face. She raised an eyebrow. "Aren't you going to eat?" Jay grabbed his fork and picked up a piece of food from her bowl. Elaine fell silent. Jay explained while eating, "I'm helping you out. Don't want you to get too full." He had never eaten from someone else's bowl before. But now? He didn't mind at all.
