Chapter 46 So, You Really Want to Know?

Tall. Slim. Anna's gaze automatically flicked to Elaine. Elaine seems to match the description, but there's one problem: Elaine doesn't know anything about medicine. Anna frowned, still puzzled. "Doctor, I really don't have a friend like that." Noticing Jay's growing anxiety, Hannah chimed in, "Anna, there really was a girl who helped you yesterday. She said she was your friend. Have you thought about it more?" Jay's eyes burned with intensity, as if he were trying to read every detail of Anna's face. Anna concentrated for a long moment but then shook her head once again. "I really don't remember."Jay was relentless. "Could the accident have caused you to lose your memory?" Elaine couldn't help but speak up. "Dr. Curran, Anna's accident was with her legs, not her head. How could she have lost her memory?" Is he out of his mind? I she so focused on his worries that he can't think straight? Jay stared at Anna in frustration. If she can't even remember, how am I supposed to find the girl who saved her? There were no leads. Even the hospital's security footage had been erased. No matter how hard he searched, there was nothing to go on. Feeling utterly defeated, Jay sank into a chair, his shoulders slumping as disappointment washed over him. Elaine glanced at him, and for the first time, she felt a surprising sense of sympathy. Is it really that important for him to find me? What is he hoping to gain by tracking me down? Is he trying to figure out how I managed to save Anna's leg without resorting to amputation? Jay stood up, his expression hard and unreadable. His mood was grim. For the first time in his otherwise smooth life, he felt utterly defeated. He lowered his gaze and began walking toward the door. Elaine opened her mouth, wanting to say something to stop him, but in the end, she remained silent. She didn't want to make things more complicated. Just as Jay reached the door, something seemed to click in his mind. He paused and turned back toward Elaine. "Do you want to have lunch here at the hospital? If so, I'll have my assistant arrange it. Also, will you be eating with me or with them?" He gestured toward Anna and the others.Elaine hesitated for a moment before answering, "I'll eat with you." She hadn't expected him, even in the middle of his frustration, to still consider lunch plans with her. I guess this brother of mine isn't all bad. But ... it's clear he favors Alora. After all, they've grown up together for 20 years. It makes sense for them to have a stronger bond. Jay nodded. "Do you have any food preferences or things you don't eat?" "No," Elaine replied, shaking her head. "Alright. Meet me at the deputy director's office at noon." With that, Jay turned and walked away. Elaine watched him leave, feeling an unexpected sense of sympathy for him. Hannah, unable to contain her curiosity, leaned in and whispered to Anna, "Anna, who was that girl who saved you?""I don't know. But whoever she is, I'm really grateful to her," Anna replied sincerely. Suddenly, Elaine spoke up, "Do you have a laptop?" Hannah nodded. "I brought one. Do you need it?" Elaine nodded in return. "I'll borrow it, thanks." ... Jay, feeling completely drained, returned to his office. After giving instructions for lunch to be prepared, he collapsed onto the sofa, lost in thought. His assistant, noticing his mood, wisely excused himself. A few minutes later, the phone on the coffee table rang. Jay reluctantly got up and grabbed the phone. When he saw the message on the screen, a jolt of surprise shot through his body. "Dr. Curran, I heard you've been asking around to find out who I am. So, you really want to know?" It was an email. Not to his work account, but to his personal email. The sender's name wasn't listed, nor was there an address. But Jay knew. He knew it was her. The girl who had saved Anna.
