When Love Is the Only Thing Left
I pursed my lips and fell silent. A moment later, I said, “You don't need to look into all the Murphys' properties. You can directly investigate the factories under Murphy Corporation or those construction sites that are currently not under construction. Pay particular attention to those abandoned factories under Armond's name.” Boris was confused. Looking at me quizzically, he asked, “But... why?” It was difficult for me to explain at the moment. “Just do as I said; I can't really explain it to you now.” Boris nodded. Then, looking at the man on the ground, he asked, “Then, what about him?” “Take him to the police.” After Boris brought the man away, Holden kept staring at me, the curiosity in his eyes barely veiled. “How did you suddenly become so clever?” I let out a snicker. “I saved you much energy and effort. You should be grateful for that.” Holden gave a rueful chuckle. “Oh, Ms. Stovall, I'm also trying to save your husband. Anyway, why did you ask Boris to only focus on the Murphys' properties? Don't you forget Abe is in Moranta as well! That man must have something to do with your husband being kidnapped.” Hearing that, I pursed my lips. A moment later, I spoke up, “Initially, I actually thought of asking Boris to look into both Armond and Abe. However, your question to the head of kidnappers just now made me realize that Armond is most probably the mastermind behind this; Abe is nothing but his henchman.” Holden narrowed his eyes, “Oh?” Seeing the curiosity on his face, I explained, “We knew that man is a hitman who came from Chanaea two days ago. Abe himself is now in trouble, so he has no time nor effort to hire a hitman. That means Armond was the one who brought the hitman to Moranta. If that's the case, we should focus on investigating Armond. He couldn't possibly lock Ashton in a mall or somewhere near a busy street. Thus, we should look into those deserted places like factories or the construction sites.” Holden nodded in agreement. “Ms. Stovall, it looks like from now on, I should see you in a new light,” he remarked, his eyes glinted in admiration. Disregarding his words, I found the mop from the washroom and cleaned the blood on the floor. After that, I decided to return to my room to wait for news from Boris. As I walked up the stairs, Holden's voice rang out from behind, “I have one question. How are you so sure that Ashton is not dead?”With a confident smile, I turned around to face him. “Because he's my husband. No one knows him better than I do.” Holden twitched his lips upon hearing my reply. He snorted, “Ugh! Stop showing off your affection. You'd better go back and rest in your room.” In the room, I was looking at the ring that I had never for once taken off my finger. Initially, I was doubtful as well whether the body belonged to Ashton. Yet, I knew it wasn't him the moment I saw no ring mark on the finger. Ashton had always been wearing the ring. Even if the ring was lost, supposedly, there should be a ring mark on his finger. Yet, there was no traces of it on the body. Thus, all I needed to do now was to wait for Boris' investigation result. The waiting was agonizing, so it was impossible to fall asleep. Lying on the bed, I was scrolling through my phone, absent-minded. Soon, I got out of the bed and left the room for the rear house. I started walking around the open-air swimming pool in circles, trying in vain to ease my mind. I was so preoccupied that I didn't even realize Jane's arrival until she sat on the lounge chair and spoke, “If you feel bored, perhaps we can have a little chat.” Instantly, I turned around and saw the woman who was smiling at me. “You're here for a long time?” She nodded. “I see you've kept walking in circles. It looks like something is bothering you. Do you mind talking with me about it?” After taking a seat beside her, I spoke dejectedly, “The most important person to me is in danger. I'm now waiting for his news. What about you? You couldn't sleep too?” She curled her lips into a faint smile. “Sort of.” Then, she said understandingly, “Well, the waiting process is indeed agonizing, but you should look on the bright side. In fact, I have experienced the same thing as you. At that time, I have thought of all the worst outcomes, including my own death.” Seeing the helplessness on her face, I couldn't help asking, “Is it, Holden?” Jane seemed a little surprised. Nevertheless, she smiled and admitted, “Was it that obvious?” I thought for a while before answering, “Not really. I wasn't sure either. When I first saw you, my first thought was that you are too young. Initially, I thought you are Holden's aunt or sister. Yet, when he angrily dragged me away with him, I knew my guess was wrong. Now, I'm not sure if I've guessed it right.”She flashed me a faint smile. “I am his mother, a mother whom he would never acknowledge. Yet, I understand him. As a mother, if I can't make my son proud nor bring honor to him, at least I shouldn't bring disgrace to him. Unfortunately, I failed. Holden is unwilling to get close to me, and it's totally understandable.”
