Seraphina Is Back—and She’s Not Alone
Abigail frowned in disgust. "Are you done? We have something to ask her." "All done," Molly replied as she led her group away. Once they were gone, Kelly and the others stepped forward. They examined Yvonne from head to toe. Looks are average at best. Her outfit was painfully modest, the entire ensemble wouldn't exceed 200. Pathetic! "Heard that you're Seraphina's best friend?" Abigail asked. Yvonne tensed up, unsure how to respond. Are they my allies or enemies? What should I say to avoid trouble? Carmen noticed her hesitation and softened her approach. "Don't worry. We're just here to ask a few questions. We won't harm you." Kelly sneered. "Hey. Don't compare us to Molly and her group. Those lower-class brats." Lower-class? If Molly is considered a lower-class to them, then what am I? Yvonne didn't dare to think further. A wave of humiliation washed over her, deepening her sense of inferiority. "Seraphina and I grew up together. We used to be close, but I don't know why we grew apart." Her voice tinged with sadness and grievance. "What else could it be? She's rich now and doesn't want to be associated with a poor kid like you. She's just heartless." Abigail sneered. Just then, Carmen caught onto something else. "You said you grew up together? So, you're from the slums, too?" Yvonne instinctively nodded but quickly stopped when she noticed the disdain on their faces. She shook her head frantically. "No. I lived nearby. Our elementary and middle schools just happened to be in the middle of both districts. That's how we ended up in the same class as deskmates." "So, you know Seraphina pretty well." Yvonne nodded."Tell us about her. What kind of person was she? What were her grades like? What about her personal life?" Carmen pressed. "Don't even think about lying. If we catch you, the consequences are unbearable," Kelly added coldly. Yvonne nodded timidly. "Seraphina used to hang out with thugs and fight with them. There were rumors that she had a child with one of them and had an abortion later on." The four girls widened their eyes in shock. "Is that true?" Linara asked urgently. "I'm not sure. Everyone was talking about it back then, and the rumors were believable, too. The thugs used to pick her up from school." The girls exchanged knowing glances, unable to contain their excitement. "How about her grades? She took the same entrance exam as you, didn't she?" "Her grades were average. Not very good." Yvonne kept her head low to hide the flicker of hesitation in her eyes. "That's all we needed to know. You can go." Carmen said dismissively, waving her hand disdainfully. Resentment boiled inside Yvonne's heart, but she didn't dare let it show. She couldn't afford to offend anyone here. When she was gone, Kelly exclaimed excitedly. "Well, well. Who would've thought she had such an interesting life? Such an exciting story deserves a wider audience, don't you think?" Abigail chuckled and nodded. Kelly wasted no time. She exposed Seraphina's past anonymously on the school's forum and made up stories about her. She had painted Seraphina as a promiscuous woman with no morals.
