When the Galaxy Wept
After entering the labor camp, everyone saw that Emerald was right. Since the guards were down, the attack still had a massive influence on the field. The ergates just pushed them to the open space in the center of the camp, there were no food or heating installations. Once pushed into the area, they waited in silence. Emerald didn’t know what they were waiting for. She looked around to observe the terrain around the camp. There were at least 500 people in this space, surrounded by many two-story buildings. About ten ergates were guarding the second floor with machine guns in their hands, frightening the 500 prisoners. It was said that the Zerg lived in the north in black houses with round roofs. There were many of those visible from a distance, but Emerald was unsure if she saw planes or homes. Emerald’s men moved slowly in the crowd so as not to attract any unwanted attention. Emerald knew it was hazardous to fight with the ergates on the second-floor one-on-one, but they didn’t have much time. The labor camp was already lacking soldiers, and they would soon find out if more ergates were missing, and then they wouldn’t have a chance to fight back before more Zerg soldiers would come to keep them under control. Maybe they would be able to save more people if they acted quickly and with determination. After everyone had moved to their planned position and waited for Emerald’s order, they suddenly heard a car engine outside the camp. A group of ergates came in with a bruised and severely injured man. The man was lowering his head, no one could see his face. She couldn’t believe that the Zerg had gotten another dozen people! Looking carefully, Emerald recognized a few faces. To her horror, she remembered Rosalind and several other young men she had met during the hijacking of the Zerg aircraft, whom she had handed over to the force in the stone circle! Emerald slowly moved her eyes to that man who was forced to kneel on the ground. The figure and his clothes looked familiar. Wait a minute, was that Colman? Emerald held the gun behind her clothes even tighter. The leading ergate hit that man with his tail on the head, which cut into his skin, blood running down on his head. No sound was heard, and everyone expected the man to be dead. “This human,” that ergate shouted in human language, “violated the dead body of a Zerg soldier. No god will forgive this kind of behavior!” Another ergate threw a bag on the ground, and some bones and flesh fell out in front of the kneeling man. “I announce in front of all of you that this sinner will be our dinner tonight. Now, you shall observe how I eat my dinner.” The ergate continued and looked around with its cold compound eyes, “From now on, anyone who runs away will be treated the same way as him!” Someone screamed in a low voice, covering their mouth with both hands and eyes filled with tears. Rosalind and a few others from the crowd wanted to run forward, but the ergates blocked them with guns. Emerald felt her heart about to explode, and the anesthetic in her leg seemed to lose its effect as she started to feel the pain again. She asked herself, “Is now the best time?” Or should she wait till the ergate really started to eat their dinner, and all the ergates were focused on eating? Which one should she choose, Colman’s life or the other people’s lives? Two ergates clenched Colman’s half-dead body as the leader grabbed Colman’s arm, opened its mouth, and lowered its head. Seeing this, Emerald’s instinct made the decision for her. Unable to think about anything else, she raised her gun and pointed it to that ergate. To her surprise, someone was faster than her. Calman, who everyone thought was unconscious, suddenly started to smile. Blood coming from the corner of his mouth, and his short hair covering his eyes, his smile was sarcastic and sad. A silver light flashed by, and both the ergate and he stayed still. His moves were so fast that most people didn’t see them clearly, but since Emerald had seen what he could do on the plane, she knew that he must have hidden the knife somewhere in his clothes and passed the search for weapons from the ergates. He successfully killed the ergate that was about to eat him alive! Without hesitating any longer, Emerald shot the five ergates behind Rosalind with several shots. The crowd started to scream, and Emerald’s men began to shoot fiercely on the ergates on the second floor. Rosalind and Colman both looked at Emerald from a distance. The shoot-off lasted for 10 minutes.Up till now, Emerald had always won during fights by wisely executing her strategies or by luck, with minimal casualties. During the battle in the aircraft, many eager young men had died during the battle, and today, even more people would lose their lives fighting with her in the frontline. Emerald leaned against the short wall of the labor camp, and Rosalind took a first-aid box she found in one of the Zerg’s rooms. Roseline cried while treating Emerald’s wounded leg. Colman lay beside Emerald as if he was dying while another doctor in the crowd was trying to save him. “You should lay down,” Rosalind said, choking. Emerald almost cried when she saw Rosalind’s tears, but she knew that more than 500 people were relying on her, she couldn’t be weak now. It was already noon. The people were still crowding the open space, the only difference was that there were about 20 ergate bodies dead on the ground and five kneeling as they had been captured, and over 50 human bodies also on the ground. Some were dead, while others were severely injured. More than half of the young men who had followed Emerald here were down, with their families and friends crying over their bodies. Emerald didn’t dare to look at their lifeless bodies. She knew that in order to win, there would be a sacrifice, but she still felt upset to see them cruelly killed in front of her.
