Chapter 178 Dare You Say That Again?

After Arthur left, Christopher decided to go check on the girl at Crest Hospital. However, his phone rang before he could leave for the hospital. He checked his phone only to realize that it was Scarlett who made the call. He frowned, for she should be too preoccupied with looking after the girl to call him. Other than that, he was also frowning because he surmised that she would only call because they received unfair treatment at the hospital. “Hello, Christopher. There is a long line at the hospital. The girl and I are waiting in line. I suppose we’ll need to wait for an hour before it’s our turn. I told them your name, but none of them seemed to know you. I don’t know who else to go to. Come quickly! I’m worried something might happen to the girl if you’re late.” Scarlett’s voice sounded anxious when it came through the phone, which brought a dark look to Christopher’s face. Although he had given the girl acupuncture treatment, it could only ease her physical symptoms. The most pressing issue would be the condition of her brain. If something went wrong, she might suffer from dementia, or in the worst case scenario, lose her life altogether. Therefore, Christopher immediately hailed a cab to hurry to Crest Hospital. As Scarlett told him, there were a lot of people. According to the administration procedures, patients had to register before paying for the fees. It would be followed by blood tests and a chest X-ray, which would be a hassle. While other patients might have no problem with the procedures, the girl couldn’t afford to go through that. His emergency treatment could only suppress her symptoms for thirty minutes at most. After that, she would be in big trouble if she didn’t receive further treatment. After some thought, Christopher figured that the girl should be treated at the neurology department, so he carried her to the doctor’s office right away. After putting the girl down, he explained the situation to the doctor. “She’s is critical condition, and is in need of immediate treatment. We can’t afford to waste time on the hospital’s administrative procedures, for it would be fatal to her. I apologize for cutting in the line, but can you treat her first?” Christopher looked at the male doctor who was wearing a white robe. The other patients who were waiting in line were initially grumbling about the unfair treatment when Christopher carried the girl to the doctor right away. However, when they saw the girl’s deathly pale face, tightly closed eyes, as well as the blood that trickled down from her lips, they inhaled sharply and stopped complaining.“Yeah. Doctor, you should check on her first. Her condition is critical.” “We can wait. It’s a matter of life and death. I think it’s not only her neurons that are injured.” “Yeah, we’re in better condition than her, so you should treat her first.” The women who were sitting beside them took pity over the girl when they noticed her serious condition. Therefore, they urged the doctor to take her in first. Even though the rest of the patients who waited in line were slightly dissatisfied with the arrangement, none of them uttered a word when they noticed the girl’s terrible condition. Therefore, everybody reached a silent agreement to allow the girl to be treated first. Christopher was relieved when he noticed that the other patients didn’t object to it. Upon heaving a sigh of relief, he turned to face the male doctor. Despite the lack of objection from the other patients, the doctor still had a conflicted look on his face as he clenched his teeth before saying, “According to the rules, patients who didn’t wait in line aren’t allowed to be treated. However, I suppose I can help since her condition is critical.” Just when Christopher assumed things would progress smoothly after that, another cold voice came through the door, startling him. “Who says that you are allowed to make such exceptions? According to the regulations, this isn’t allowed.” When Christopher turned around, he saw another doctor in a similar white robe. He glanced at the doctor’s name tag, which indicated the doctor’s identity—‘Associate Professor Bryan McKenzie, Head of the Neurology Department’. With that, Christopher knew that Bryan was the head of the neurology department, which meant that even the male doctor beside him had to take orders from him. Bryan glanced at the doctor indifferently while letting out a huff. His gestures were enough to silence the doctor. Then, Bryan looked back at Christopher with a self-conceited expression. He was even more disdainful of Christopher when he noticed that Christopher was wearing cheap clothes. As an associate professor, as well as the head of the neurology department, Bryan was a skilled medical practitioner who was highly praised. Therefore, he looked down on Christopher. How dare a poor country bumpkin like him try to cut the queue? Other than that, multiple thoughts raced across his mind since he happened to bump into Christopher just when he arrived at the department. How much more should I charge him for the administration fees? I will have to charge even more for treatment. Otherwise, I won’t be able to live up to my title as the Head of the Neurology Department.“Kid, I’m not trying to swindle you. According to the hospital’s regulations, you will have to pay another one hundred thousand for the administration fees, as well as five times the normal medical fees if you decide to not wait in line.” Bryan dragged a chair over before dusting his robe and sitting down slowly. He adjusted his pose while smiling at Christopher. Bryan already tried that on multiple patients, which always ended up with them fleeing the scene while almost kneeling on the ground. Although he never got a hundred thousand out of his scams, he could still manage to get tens of thousands. He deduced that he could at least extort ten thousand from Christopher. The thought of it brought a self-conceited smile to his face. The patients know nothing of the hospital’s regulations, so they won’t be able to do anything about it. Christopher was momentarily taken aback by what Bryan told him. When he finally snapped back to his senses, a glum look crept onto his face. Normally, he would scoff at the doctor, but he wasn’t in the mood for that due to the critical condition that the girl was in. The new doctors are acting out of line already even though Harold had just cleaned the house. Bryan’s attitude riled Christopher up, so he decided to punish him accordingly. Otherwise, he wouldn’t deem himself worthy of his title as the hospital’s dean. “I dare you to say that again,” he said in a frosty voice.
