Upgradable Space: Reborn to Survive the Apocalypse

Chapter 606 The Duck Face Mask Incident

The crowd that had been watching stepped back another half step. Still, they didn't leave. In this boring apocalypse, this was the rare kind of excitement people didn't want to miss. Matt trembled as he crawled up from the ground. He looked like he was barely hanging on. Gone was the arrogant look Caroline had seen before. When Caroline first saw him acting all proud and arrogant. Now his whole body was hunched and tight. Even the way he looked at Kay was full of fear. "I-I don't know," he stammered. "She argued with Bonnie, then left. After that, she never came back. I thought I'd run into her at the base, but I never did." The moment he finished speaking, Kay kicked him hard again. "You're lying!" The man was sent flying onto his back. He curled up on the ground, shaking in pain. Caroline stepped forward, holding a yellow duck mask. She pressed it into Kay's hand. "Make him wear this. He'll tell you everything." The instant Kay saw Caroline, the violent edge around her faded. Then she looked at the thing in Caroline's hand and froze. Gratitude flashed in her eyes. "Thank you." But while Kay and Caroline were talking, Matt suddenly scrambled to his feet and tried to run. "Murder! Help!" he screamed as he ran. "Someone's trying to kill me! She got my whole family killed, and now she wants to silence me! Isn't anyone going to stop this? This is an army base!" Unluckily for him, Francis had just been reported by the public for a disturbance involving ability users and rushed over. Pushing through the crowd, he shouted loudly, "Who is it? Who's causing trouble here?!" The first half of his sentence thundered with authority and anger. But the moment he saw Caroline and Kay in the center of the crowd, his voice suddenly softened. The second part of his words even sounded gentle, like he was calming someone down. Kay didn't care who had arrived. All she wanted was the truth about her mother. She grabbed the duck mask from Caroline and lunged toward Matt, who was trying to escape. Matt had already run up to Francis. He clutched Francis's sleeve tightly, trying to hide behind him. Francis wanted to stand on Caroline and Kay's side, but duty came first. He instinctively shifted the man behind him. That small movement caused a mistake; the duck mask landed squarely on Francis's head. Someone in the crowd shouted, "That woman's going to beat someone to death! She's far too bold! Is the army even doing anything?!" Then Francis spoke, his coarse and high-pitched voice coming through the duck mask. "Of course we're doing something! Even though she is my wife, I'd still step in! Quack, quack!" Caroline had no words. The crowd went completely silent. Everyone was stunned. Whispers broke out everywhere. Even Matt, who hides behind Francis, peeked out. He stared at Kay and stuttered, "Y-you're with the base leader? Why didn't you say so earlier? If you had, I wouldn't have dared mess with you." That ugly expression on his face was sickening. Kay glanced at Francis. She said nothing, but her eyes made one thing very clear. Kay was furious, and Francis was in serious trouble. Caroline hurried over and pulled the mask off Francis's head. She put it back into Kay's hands. "I'll leave the rest to you," she said. "I need to go home and feed the panda cubs." As expected, watching drama was never worth it. She had wasted one use of her ability for nothing. It hurt to think about. After things settled down, Caroline returned to her place. The scene at the residential area was lively too. Every so often, Nelson's furious yelling echoed down the hallway. Shane, who had been squatting in the corridor earlier, was gone. As Caroline passed Nelson's room, a scalpel suddenly flew out. It nearly hit her. She quickly caught it and looked inside. Nelson stood there, one scalpel in his hand and a cupcake in the other. He was glaring at Shane. Shane was completely different now. The violent aura around him had returned. He was covered in wounds, his clothes torn and ruined, standing directly opposite Nelson. Nelson's face was cold as he spoke. "Behave or get lost." Shane suddenly exploded. His target was Nelson. At the same time, a deep rumbling sound rolled through the area. It sounded like explosions. Caroline's heart sank. But no matter how serious things were, Nelson's safety came first. She activated her ability at once, freezing Shane solid like an ice statue. She rushed forward, planning to pull Nelson straight into her storage space. If Nelson lost control of Shane, there would be no one left who could stop him.
