Upgradable Space: Reborn to Survive the Apocalypse
Jayden looked up and saw a bat hanging from the ceiling. The bat had its backside stuck out, scratching with its claws. In that instant, both of them realized what had happened. “I've heard that bat droppings are used in traditional medicine, since they're supposed to help with digestion and even improve eyesight. At first, I thought my body just needed to have something... Then, I realized that I experience this urge every time I see an animal's droppings. After two days, I suddenly... passed a big chunk of gold. I was terrified!" As he spoke, the color drained from Jayden's face. Panic flickered across his eyes, and he looked almost dazed. Honestly, even Caroline could feel the same fog of confusion. This was a horrible ability to have. "Of course, I only eat those that are technically safe. You know... droppings from sparrows, rabbits, chickens, horses, pigeons... In the old days, people used some of that in herbal remedies, so I kept telling myself it was basically medicine. But... as I produced more gold, I couldn't hide it anymore, and the government found out. Of course, they were thrilled and talked to me for hours. They even created a new job position for me. But at the end of the day, I'm just a human money-making machine..." As he finished speaking, Jayden's expression turned to one of misery, like he was about to cry even though his eyes were dry. Caroline clenched her fists, her nails digging into her palm. In general, she wouldn't laugh unless she was really unable to hold it in. As Jayden rambled on, Caroline could only tell him to take care of himself. "Actually, I've made my peace with it. Compared to those who have useless abilities, or even those with no abilities at all, at least my ability can help me get a position in the government. The government will protect me, and I will never go hungry. Right now, I have all the money I could want, but that's all I have. Now, anything I eat tastes strange. Ever since I've gotten this ability, I've lost my sense of smell and taste." Jayden sighed heavily before he left. Before he left, Caroline had promised Jayden that if she ever found a way to remove someone's ability, or if a serum was invented to do so, she would come looking for him. As she watched his sad figure walk away, Caroline felt a range of emotions all at once. "If everyone were given the choice between losing their joy of eating in exchange for being able to produce gold, I wonder how many people would actually do it?" Caroline sighed to herself. She glanced at the golden ball in her hands, a smile tugging at her lips. Not bad, I started the morning receiving gold. Today will be a good day. Caroline had just gone back in and was feeding her panda cubs when she heard someone banging at her door. When she didn't answer, the person outside seemed to become more panicked and started shouting, "Caroline! Caroline! Hurry and come with me! Kay is coming!" Isn't this Colonel Sutton's voice? Kay's coming? Looking at the panda cubs in her arms that were drinking their milk, Caroline tried to speed up the feeding. She hollered back, "Hold on! I'll come with you to meet Kay once I feed the cubs!" The moment Caroline finished feeding the cubs, she was dragged by Francis out of the house and toward the base entrance. Caroline had left Raven and Jet to take care of the panda cubs just in case one of them tried to crawl out of their cribs and ended up taking a fall. Tyler happened to catch sight of Francis holding Caroline's hand tightly as they passed his place. Tyler frowned, a flicker of hostility directed toward Francis flashing across his eyes. However, Francis's mind was fixated on Kay, and he didn't notice the hostility in Tyler's gaze. Instead, he smiled at Tyler, saying, "Tyler, I'm about to get myself a girlfriend! Why are you still single? For the sake of the human race, hurry and find someone to settle down and have children with!" As Francis said this, Caroline happened to look up, locking eyes with Tyler. Tyler's cheeks flushed. Caroline addressed Tyler, "I'm going with Colonel Sutton to meet Kay. Can you keep an eye on the pandas for me? If I'm not back in an hour, help me feed them!" Tyler nodded. Next to Caroline, Francis chuckled and said, "You're like a single mother who's asking Tyler to babysit for you!"
