Upgradable Space: Reborn to Survive the Apocalypse

Chapter 598 Rightful Owner

Caroline let out a quiet laugh, pulling out the slate unit from her storage space. Caroline had already absorbed all the energy within the slate unit. Now, the slate unit was merely a beautiful, empty slate. Caroline hadn't kept the note that had come with it, but the moment she had taken it out, a look of surprise crossed Jayden's face. "This... Isn't this the slate unit that I ordered back then?" As far as Caroline was concerned, this slate was merely a useless slab. In the midst of the apocalypse, it wasn't even worth two slices of bread. As such, without hesitation, she placed the slate unit in Jayden's hands. "I happened to find it on one of my scavenging runs. There was a note with it at that time. The note read, 'A gift from Mr. Jayden Mills to his beloved wife'. Is that right?" Jayden held the slate unit, running his hand across it gently. A wistful look crossed his face, and he said, "I asked the store to help me write the note. I didn't have time to go collect it, so I asked my wife to go and get her gift from the store. But by the time the apocalypse had hit, she hadn't gone to collect it. She even called me to tell me she wanted a divorce..." "Well, then it's finally found its way back to its rightful owner. I have no reason to hold onto it," Caroline said. Caroline felt that meeting Jayden was, in its own strange way, a twist of fate in the middle of the apocalypse. Back then, Caroline had casually decided to store the slate in her storage space instead of tossing it after absorbing its energy, like what she had done with the other pieces of jewelry. Jayden stared at Caroline with a look of disbelief on his face. "Really?" She waved her hand. "If you keep asking me that, I'll take it back." Hearing this, Jayden quickly kept the slate, the expression on his face significantly less sorrowful. Caroline was about to turn away to head back inside when he called out again. "Wait! I can't just take this without giving you something in return!" He strode off but returned quickly with a heavy box. He stopped in front of Caroline and opened the box. Sitting in the box was a lump of gold, roughly the size of a soccer ball. "It's been cleaned and melted down again. It's definitely clean and pure. You can go and exchange it for something with the government. Here's a tip as well. The government is going to start using coins soon. They'll mint these new coins from gold, so this is basically money!" Caroline stared at the gold before her, unable to help herself from thinking about Jayden's ability. She knew exactly where this gold had come from. They were in the middle of an apocalypse. Caroline had even eaten cockroaches, so she wouldn't be afraid of this. She smiled and took it from Jayden, saying, "Thank you." Thinking about the description she had read on Zero System, she decided to offer him some information. As far as she knew, all abilities were tricky. Most of the time, users didn't fully understand their own abilities and needed to experiment or try them out multiple times. "I'm wondering... what are you eating to... produce gold?" Caroline had wanted to use a cruder word, but it felt a little disrespectful. Hearing Caroline's question, Jayden's face became ashen. "I can't do it... every day," he stammered, avoiding eye contact with Caroline now. It was almost as if she had touched a nerve. According to Jayden, he had not been aware of his ability at first. Then, one day, he'd been wandering around the shelter, starving. Everyone else at the shelter had been busy finding things that needed to be done, but he had been feeling queasy, and nothing he ate felt right. Even so, he was very hungry. As such, he wandered around the shelter, hoping he could walk it off. At that moment, he saw a few round and black shapes on one of the tables. The moment he saw them, the hunger seemed to overwhelm him. He could barely control himself. There was no one else around, so he headed straight for the table and ate whatever was there. Unfortunately, he'd barely put them into his mouth when the person who owned it walked in. Seeing Jayden eating, the owner flew into a rage. He rushed over, ready to hit him for stealing his food, and tried to drag Jayden to whoever was in charge of the shelter. He only agreed to drop the matter when Jayden offered him his biscuits in exchange. While this man turned away to count and tally his items, he asked Jayden what he had eaten. Jayden pointed to the table, telling him it had been something round that had been sitting there. The man froze. Before either of them could react, something round fell from the air again. It hit the table, rolled twice, and was even warm...
