Upgradable Space: Reborn to Survive the Apocalypse
Silver spotted Caroline and Nelson and chirped a few times. Rocks suddenly fell from above, and she quickly dodged. Then she swooped down, plucked a strand of hair from Caroline with her tiny beak, and flew upward. She probably headed to report to Denton. Jet found a spot to land nearby, but luck wasn't on his side. The moment he touched down, a rock smacked his head, scraping off the two new feathers he had just grown. "Still no sign of Tyler!" Jet shook his head. He knew it wasn't the time for fussing, but his tone made it clear he wasn't happy. Caroline was pulling Nelson up. But the whole area was shaking violently, and she could barely muster any strength. It felt like Nelson might drag her down instead. She planned to hold him with one hand while clawing at the rock wall with the other. To stay safe, she froze her whole arm to the rock. Even so, it didn't feel solid enough. The ground under her wobbled, and the wall behind wasn't much better. She deepened her abilities, almost fusing her entire body to the rock, even freezing her hand to Nelson's. But that made it harder to pull him up. Caroline was practically an immobile ice sculpture. Her lips had turned pale, and her body shivered from the cold. Another quake hit the mountain. Chunks of ice on her body shattered from the motion. Countless rocks pelted her, loosening her frozen grip on the wall. She had to keep freezing herself to the rocks. When one block of ice got knocked loose, her hold on Nelson's hand slipped slightly. Raven had used his ability to lighten Nelson's weight, but it wasn't enough. At this point, holding a rabbit would've been tricky, let alone a grown man.The shaking was brutal, and both of their palms were sweaty, making it worse. Caroline tried to freeze Nelson to the wall, but she couldn't find a good anchor. The lower wall was blocked from view. With all the shaking and falling debris, there was no easy way to operate. She bit her lip, frustrated. Her Zero System had nothing useful. If only she could use Tyler's power—a single rope would've held Nelson perfectly! After the quake, huge boulders began to rain down. Nelson could feel himself slipping, possibly dragging Caroline down with him. He looked at her under the headlamp, his eyes shining fiercely. "Caroline, let go of me. I won't die." He even raised his free hand with a scalpel, ready to break the ice connecting them and free her fingers. More rocks rained down, shaking everything. Raven and Jet dodged the debris, shouting urgently. Jet, in particular, yelled, "Human! It's coming down! This place is collapsing!" Looking over the bottomless chasm, Caroline gritted her teeth and made a choice. As the ground wobbled again, she met Nelson's eyes and asked seriously, "Nelson, do you trust me?" Without hesitation, he answered, "Yeah." Then, he disappeared. Caroline finally exhaled, wiped sweat off her face, and teased Raven, "Nelson looks skinny, but he's heavy as hell." Raven didn't say a word. He just nudged the shrew toward her. She could tell he was relieved as well. Caroline patted him and stored both him and the shrew in her storage space. A huge boulder suddenly crashed down.Without Nelson weighing her down, Caroline leaped across the chasm. Jet followed. She turned on her headlamp. As the ground shook and rumbled, a fierce light ignited in her eyes. "Jet, are you scared?" Jet fluttered his wings. "What could be worse than Silver seeing me bald?"
