Upgradable Space: Reborn to Survive the Apocalypse

Chapter 553 Danger

Caroline's voice echoed endlessly around her. This place had multiple levels stacked on top of each other, so everyone stood at different heights. Spotting each other wasn't easy. She barely took a step when the ground shook violently again. This tremor was stronger than anything before. Over ten feet away, a figure wavered on the edge. That was Nelson! "Nelson!" Caroline yelled. Up ahead, Nelson immediately turned his head. To Caroline, he looked completely ridiculous. He had a rope tied around his waist, and it looked like he'd modified the end of it. Something was jammed into the wall, keeping him from falling, no matter how violently everything shook. But from Caroline's angle, he looked like some sort of octopus with legs dangling everywhere. They weren't just ten feet apart horizontally—Nelson was ten feet above her. The headlamp strapped to his forehead made him easy to spot. "Nelson, stay put! I'm coming to you!" she shouted. But Nelson yelled back, "Don't!" Only then did Caroline notice the pink nose lurking outside the beam of his headlamp. It was buried in shadow, barely visible. She glanced at Raven at her side and quickly signaled. Raven, immediately understood, shrank down to about palm-size, and dashed toward Nelson. Dust and gravel blasted everywhere while the whole place lurched. Caroline clung tightly to the stone wall, barely daring to blink. But she realized the pink nose had vanished. Nelson also noticed that the mutant creature had disappeared. He didn't panic. His eyes scanned for any sign of the mutant. With everything he knew about mutant creatures, he was certain this shrew had triggered an ability. A purple syringe was ready in his hand, prepared to strike the moment it showed up. Seconds dragged by. The shrew hadn't appeared. Just as sweat started pooling in his palm, a tug hit the rope beside him. He spun to see the shrew clinging to his rope, gnawing fiercely. Just a few fibers were left before the rope would give way. Its eyes looked injured—two long scars cut across them, giving it a seriously creepy look. Its pink nose twitched toward Nelson like it could feel him staring, scrunching up twice. Then it opened its jaws wide, ready to bite through the rope. Suddenly, a black blur shot in from the side, slamming into the shrew and knocking it off. Raven had arrived, fighting the shrew fiercely. The ground shook, rocks tumbled down, and Nelson felt the footing beneath him getting worse by the second. He clung tightly to the rope, trying to tie a knot to secure the frayed section before it completely severed. But at that exact moment, the rock under him gave way. He lost his footing and dropped. The rope went tight. Already on the verge of snapping, it stretched thinner and thinner... Snap! The rope finally broke with a sharp crack. Nelson started falling. Instinctively, his hands shot up. He caught a small but strong hand. "Whoa, you scared me!"Caroline's chest heaved. She had run as fast as she could and was still trying to catch her breath. The air down here was terrible—dust everywhere, barely enough to breathe. The sprint had made her feel dizzy. Raven had finished the fight, shrinking to kitten size, carrying the dead giant mutant shrew in his mouth. Caroline understood immediately. That shrew could upgrade their storage, so they couldn't waste it. She pulled Nelson up, getting him to solid ground first. Just then, Jet came back, wobbling in the air like it might fall any second. Silver was right behind him.
