Upgradable Space: Reborn to Survive the Apocalypse
After a while, Jasper looked at Caroline. "Caroline, we're overthinking it. The storage space is straightforward. If it says calculating, then it's still calculating. It just hasn't figured it out yet." Caroline frowned. "But that dinosaur egg has been in there for so long. How is it still not done?" "Maybe it hasn't gotten enough energy. Or maybe the current level just can't process wild mutated animals yet." Caroline thought that sounded possible. But ... what about the dinosaur egg? She was puzzled over it but couldn't figure out the reason. She still didn't understand the storage space well enough. Just then, Jasper hopped onto her shoulder. Its tail lifted high in excitement, as if it had solved everything. "Caroline, you're thinking too hard. Why wouldn't a dinosaur egg count as an animal? An egg still has a baby dinosaur inside. For all we know, this egg might be about to hatch—the little dinosaur is already formed, which is why it could mutate. Otherwise, have you ever seen chicken eggs or duck eggs mutate?" Caroline nodded. That did make sense. But the wild mutated animals she kept at the ranch weren't producing any by-products. They were just eating for free. "I've been so focused on upgrading the mobile base that I forgot about the storage space. I haven't upgraded it in a long time. Maybe if I upgrade the whole system again, the wild animals will finally start producing by-products." The thought made her grin. Perfect timing. She could also test whether aggressive mutated animals could be safely placed inside the ranch. If that worked, then whenever she ran into dangerous creatures outside, she could just toss them in first. Excited by the idea, Caroline planned to head into the mountains to catch more mutated animals. Or maybe check the nearby malls. The snowstorm was long gone, and the shopping centers were exposed. All that jewelry was lying around untouched. It was the perfect time to stock up. She stepped out of her room to grab Raven and head out, only to find Tyler sitting in the dark living room. It was already ten at night. The day after Denton's chaotic gift. Usually by this hour, everyone stayed in their own rooms. After the apocalypse, unless they had a reason to move at night, everyone slept early. Ten o'clock bedtime was healthier than before the world ended. "Heading out?" Tyler asked when he saw her. Caroline nodded lightly. "Yeah. I wanted to gather some supplies." Tyler suddenly stood up. There were no lights outside. Even though the mobile base protected them and the house was remote, they rarely turned on the living room lights. At night, before turning on any bedroom lights, they always closed the curtains tightly. No point letting anyone in the distance see the villa glowing on the mountain. It was all just part of keeping themselves safe. In the dim room, Tyler walked toward her. His height, combined with the shadows, made his steps feel heavy and imposing. Caroline felt an odd pressure from him ... something serious, almost intense. When he finally stopped in front of her, he said, "Caroline, give me your hand. I have a housewarming gift for you." Caroline blinked, surprised, but she raised her hand. Tyler stepped up to her and set something gently in Caroline's pale palm. Under the faint indoor light, she looked down. A bullet lay in her hand. Old, scratched, worn over time. The casing looked like it had been pieced back together. A thin chain was attached so it could be worn around the neck. "This bullet hit me here." Tyler touched his chest. His voice was low but steady. "It missed my heart by about an eighth of an inch." In the darkness, his eyes gleamed with a sharp, startling light. "If there's anything in this world that has been closest to my heart, it's that bullet. "I've worn it for years to remind myself how close I came to dying. No matter the mission or the danger, I need to stay sharp and value my life. Over time, this bullet became a part of me."Tyler tapped the bullet resting in her palm. "Caroline, I'm giving it to you. I hope you'll accept it." Caroline stared at the bullet, a strange feeling rising in her chest. It felt like she was holding Tyler's heart. Tyler wasn't someone who used sweet words.
