Upgradable Space: Reborn to Survive the Apocalypse

Chapter 492 A Fragile Peace

Dyson looked at Caroline with a face full of sincerity. Caroline didn't refuse. "Alright then, I'll take a look around the base." She wanted to see what kind of game Dyson was playing. So Dyson began showing her around. They hadn't gone up two floors before Caroline glanced at the time. By now, Tyler should've already made it into Crow's room. Splitting up was part of the plan. If someone in Building B was plotting against them, Crow would be the first person to question. Whether or not that person was Dyson, they needed to confirm if Crow was behind it. To be fair, Crow was truly pitiful. Lately, Caroline had been using his ability for testing. According to her Zero System, Crow himself didn't truly know how to use it properly. She wanted to understand the real method behind it. Every day, she used up all her charges of his ability. And once she ran out, she'd go find Crow and copy it again. Sometimes, late at night, she'd hit the limit, feel like she was close to figuring it out, and immediately go find Crow for another copy. Crow was on the verge of a breakdown because of her. At first, she used the ability to predict her own situations. But later, she thought it was boring to use it alone—so she started asking if anyone else wanted to know their future. Their reactions were ... interesting. Tyler never once let her use it on him. He said the only thing that mattered was surviving whatever came next. If there was danger, they'd deal with it. When that moment came, they could use the ability if they had to. As for personal questions, he just looked at her for a long time and said he had nothing to ask—though his face turned red for some reason.Nelson's questions, meanwhile, were completely random. Things like: how many tries it would take to perfect his anti-mosquito serum; whether Handsy could shrink itself; which chef in the world still made the best cupcakes; and if rats would act more feminine after being neutered with tartrate. For most of Nelson's questions, Caroline's foresight just returned a blank. After a few tries, Nelson narrowed his eyes and said with his usual smugness, "What a useless ability. I'd rather run my own experiments." Caroline was speechless. It was a future-predicting ability! Some futures simply hadn't happened yet, so of course they couldn't be seen. And when he asked "which trial number will succeed," all she could see was an image of him celebrating success—not how many attempts it took. She could only tell him the experiment would eventually work. When she explained that, Nelson squinted even more. "You needed that fancy ability to tell me I'll succeed? Obviously I'll succeed!" Caroline had no words left. "Totally useless," he declared. She gave up on him after that. Next, she went to find Denton. The moment he heard why she was there, his eyes went wide. "Caroline, that's amazing! I have a ton of questions! Wait right here—I'll make a list." Ten minutes later, Caroline received a handwritten sheet filled with questions. Things Denton wants to know about the future: What does my future girlfriend look like? Will my brother still hit me when I grow up? Will being the Rat King affect my dating life? Can my ability mutate or evolve so it's less embarrassing to use? Will Silver ever turn into a human?... Caroline stared at the list in silence. She tried predicting a few of them. Like whether Tyler would still hit him. The answer was yes. She even saw a mental image of Tyler smacking Denton with a cane. No idea what Denton had done, but judging by the swing, both of them still had plenty of strength in old age—one strong enough to hit, the other strong enough to take it. She couldn't see their faces clearly, only two white-haired old men in the vision. Still, it was kind of funny. She also liked the question about Silver turning human and tried predicting it. The image she saw was Silver and Jet cuddling side by side, looking perfectly happy. As for Denton's future girlfriend, she tried to look—but just as the image was about to form, Snow barged in. She caught only a glimpse before the vision faded away. And of course, that had been her last charge for the day.
