Upgradable Space: Reborn to Survive the Apocalypse
But then Dyson's ability awakened. It was a very strange ability. When it awakened, Building B was in the middle of a rebellion among several ability users. During the fighting, he saw how strong he could be and learned how to make the ability grow. He had nearly died saving Crow. In that moment, his old way of living collapsed. Why had he worked so hard to be the reliable fat guy for everyone else? What did it get him? If he had really died back then, what would it have meant? He would've just been the same capable fat guy he'd always been. Nothing would've changed. It was just like when he was young—back then, he was the reliable fat kid in a gang of street punks. Before the world fell apart, he was the dependable fat guy in the Obsidian Fang. After the apocalypse, he became the same thing under Crow. All those years of working hard—what had he really achieved? If he died as nothing more than "the capable fat guy," that would've been the end of it. In the last second before his death, he finally understood—this wasn't the life he wanted. That thought hit him hard. He felt lost. When he woke, he still felt lost. But he also thought maybe it was time to find his own path. A life for himself. Start by making his ability stronger. So he set his sights on Caroline and Tyler. Before this, he really had no wish to pick a fight with them. Ever since he met those two, he had never truly seen them as enemies. From the very first moment, he knew they weren't ordinary people. That was why he'd always avoided clashing with them head-on. Something deep down told him that if he ever did, they'd take him down easily. Before, they had only stood on opposite sides, each playing their own little games in secret. Whenever they met, they kept things polite on the surface. He had even approached them once on Crow's behalf, and after a brief conflict, they somehow ended up on speaking terms. Their relationship eventually settled into a strange, delicate balance—something that neither side could quite define. Now he wanted a change. If he could kill these two, he thought, he would not be just the capable fat guy anymore. He would have more possibilities. He repeated that idea to himself over and over. Now he stood on the top floor of Building B, holding a precision-grade spyglass. It was made inside Building B with advanced tech. It could lock on a person and track them automatically. When Caroline and Tyler left Building A together earlier, the spyglass in his hand vibrated and locked onto them. He grinned as he watched them separate. Caroline headed toward Building B while Tyler slipped out of sight. His scope had limited range, so he couldn't see where Tyler went. Perfect. Two people apart were easier to handle. He walked to the elevator. Crow was resting now. He could welcome Caroline on behalf of Obsidian Fang. After Lisa left, Dyson had become the second-in-command. It was his role now. On the first floor he saw Caroline being led into Building B. He hurried over with a friendly smile. "Well, if it isn't Caroline. What brings you here? Come on in. I saw you from upstairs and wanted to welcome you." Caroline glanced at Dyson. Her brow tightened for a moment, then she smiled politely. "Dyson, you are the second-in-command now. It is an honor to be welcomed by you." She was putting on a show. The smile in Caroline's eyes deepened a little. But every muscle in her body stayed tense, ready at any moment to take on Dyson if he made a move. Dyson laughed and clicked his tongue twice when he heard she wanted to see Crow. "Oh Caroline, what luck. Our old man is resting. Older people need their sleep. If you are not in a hurry, why not wait a bit? I can show you around our base. We have new products. If you like anything, just take it."
