Upgradable Space: Reborn to Survive the Apocalypse

Chapter 448 The Little Paw Calmed a Giant Fish

Caroline didn't waste a second. She jumped straight into the water. At the same time, she used her ability and froze the fish pond. Through the clear ice, she saw the giant fish still thrashing. Its tail flicked again and again, but Jasper clung to the fish's head like a tiny, angry barnacle. The fish could only wiggle in a small space, unable to leap or fight back. Even though Jasper was small, he was holding the giant thing down with sheer stubborn energy. Caroline melted just the ice around her, then stepped across the slick surface until she reached the giant fish. The giant fish saw her coming. It opened its mouth wide, like it was about to sing a sad sea ballad. Jasper smacked its head with his paw. "This is my space!" Jasper yelled. "If I say your ability is locked, then your ability is locked!" Caroline let out a breath of relief. No wonder the giant fish hadn't used any special power and could be pinned by one small cat. Inside her storage space, Jasper could seal the abilities of any creature. With that in mind, Caroline stepped closer and pried the giant fish's mouth open. The fish tried to fight back, but she jammed three sharp ice shards inside to keep its mouth from closing. Then she reached her hand into the giant fish's mouth. She called out softly, "Marmy, Marmy." A moment later, she felt something warm crawl onto her thumb. That tiny heat! Marmy! Caroline's heart jumped with joy as she pulled her hand back. But as her hand slid out, the giant fish suddenly went wild, beating against the frozen pond with terrifying force. "Caroline, hurry! The giant fish is losing it!" Jasper shouted. Caroline grabbed Jasper with one arm, held tight to Marmy with the other, and leapt out of the fish pond. The moment they all got out, the entire pond started shaking beneath them. Then the giant fish jumped out of the water. Its eyes were wild and furious, like every old grudge and fresh anger had boiled up at once. It lunged straight at Caroline and Jasper, jaws wide, ready to tear into their flesh. Bang! It slammed into the pond's invisible barrier. Caroline even saw a splash of blood smear across the glowing surface—its hit had been that strong. But even hurt, the giant fish pushed its huge head above the water again. Its cold, dull eyes locked onto Caroline. No—onto the little Marmy in her arms. A dangerous, frantic energy rolled off its giant body. Right then, Marmy suddenly squirmed in Caroline's hands. It seemed restless, like something was calling to it. Thinking she was squeezing too hard, Caroline quickly loosened her grip. The moment she did, Marmy jumped down. The tiny monkey marched right to the edge of the pond. "Oh no, this silly monkey!" Jasper shouted, panicking. Marmy was so small, with big round eyes, staring at the giant fish thrashing in the water. Slowly, he reached out one little paw. And then something unbelievable happened. The rage vanished from its body like a switch had been flipped. It swam forward, gently, quietly, until it reached the shore. Then it pressed its massive, blood-stained head against Marmy's warm, tiny paw. In that moment, the giant fish's energy changed. The wild fury was gone. After the shock faded, Caroline turned to Jasper. "What happened earlier? Why did the giant fish swallow Marmy?" Jasper looked away, clearly guilty, and started explaining. As it turned out, Jasper had seen Marmy suddenly appear inside the fish pond. Even the giant fish, who had always been restless and angry, had suddenly calmed down. So, Jasper decided to tease it. He had disliked that fish for a long time—couldn't eat it, had a nasty temper, always tried to destroy the storage space, and required constant special attention. Jasper entered the Vibrant Fish Pond and picked Marmy up. When the giant fish noticed Jasper taking Marmy away, it grew furious. Jasper became even more pleased with himself. But when he tried to carry Marmy out of the pond, the giant fish suddenly opened its huge mouth and swallowed Marmy in one gulp. That led to everything Caroline saw afterward. Caroline was wordless. At that moment, one line appeared in her mind. Yes. This is exactly the kind of silly stuff Jasper would do. If she was guessing right, the giant fish probably swallowed Marmy not to hurt it, but because it wanted Marmy desperately. Otherwise, Marmy wouldn't be standing beside the pond again. "Is there any chance that Marmy can stay here?" Caroline asked. Her imagination was already running wild, with Marmy sitting on the giant fish's head, leading it into battle, sweeping through enemies like a storm. The giant fish was insanely strong. It would be the perfect support partner! But Jasper shook his head hard. "Sorry, Caroline. Random animals can't stay. That's the rule."
